I doubt simply clicking links has an effect on your trust rating. Bungie seems to be a bit self-conscious when it comes to potentially exploiting the trust rating system. If just clicking got you a title and a bar, when the community at large figured it out, a mess of low level little exploits could and would come into play behind the scenes.
Its true that no one would really care about such an exploit on the surface, but I think it comes down to the website and its security being a source of pride for the Webteam. I'm sure someone thought about that potential eventuality, and disabled it before it happened. The webteam was pretty concerned with applying a trust or karma system if it relied solely on user input, so I think they'd avoid building in that particular exploit.
Though, I don't know any more than you OP. I do believe DeeJ when he said everything is tracked. That does sound like something the stat nerds on the webteam would do. I just doubt it plays a role on the trust system.
