Subject: How is Master chief, still a Master chief???

I am alpha, i am omega.

I am the last of the primes.

I mean he blew up a giant ancient alien space ring taking a entire covie fleet with it and stopping the flood for the time and stopping all life being nuked by halo.

He then does other -blam!- in halo 2 and gathers more intel and kills 1 of the main 3 leaders of the covenant.

And then in halo 3 he saves Earth from the flood kind of, and then stops all the halo rings be fired, kills the gravemind and stops the flood. And the unlucky sob still has the rank of master chief. If that was some random private who did that -blam!- he would have been a -blam!- general.

I thought that Master Chief Petty Officer was the highest rank for enlisted personnel(I've never seen a spartan hold an officer rank such as captain or commander in the navy).

I do remember at some point reading in one of the books (or maybe somewhere else) that there was a reason that Spartans never got promoted to officer ranks, though I can't quite remember what it was. It made sense at the time though...

And Fred. Although that might be debatable. Anyway, I think that its because ranks don't matter for a spartan. They just receive orders and carry out the mission. A spartan is just a wind up toy sent to kill.

I suspect it's because Spartan II's would have unreasonable expectations of normal military personnel. It's the same reason why Spartan II's consider being paired with normal Marines to be babysitting.

@OP

He's at the top of the ladder. To be promoted to Warrant officer is a potential route, but Warrant Officers specialties are usually specified in their rank, where as a Master Chief is basically the Alpha of Enlisted.

This reminds me of stories I've heard where 2nd Lieutenants in the USMC would attempt to get Gunnery Sergeants and First Sergeants to salute them, and the Gunnery Sergeants and First Sergeants would usually just tell the 2nd Lieutenant to kiss their asses.

Ultimately, there really isn't any way to promote John any higher than Master Chief. Any other rank would render him less effective.

PS:

I feel it's necessary to note that video game rank structures are total BS. They are almost always very different from reality with the only reasonable relations being the terms, images, and basic order.

Video games would have you believe that a Master Chief is only half way up the ladder, when in reality, a Master Chief is in the position to have casual lunches and go to football games with Generals.

There is only one Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. He is the most senior enlisted member of the Navy. He can't go any higher.

Technically, John wouldn't be promoted, he'd be advanced. You don't get "promotions" until you become an officer.

My dad's a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the Coast Guard, which is one rank below MCPO. If he were to get advanced again, he'd hit the top for enlisted ranks. That's the only real reason I know any of this.

Who cares?

Chief will go down in history. ONI will cover up the Spartan II program and say he was a Spartan IV since they all volunteers. They wouldn't even say Spartan IV, they'll say SPARTAN and pretend the IVs are the first of their kind I guess. Just to cover their asses.

Either way, John-117 will be immortalized in history books of the Halo Universe. That's worth far more than any measly military rank.

Too bad that the Spartan II program went public a good 10 years before Halo 4.

  • 06.20.2012 8:50 PM PDT

He's already the highest ranking enlisted he can be.

And I'm fairly sure they don't just promote you based on that stuff.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

At this point I think his rank is irrelevant, no?

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, MCPON for short, is the highest rank you can get without being an officer.

Unless a Captain rank (or higher, technically a Warrant Officer could order him around, but Halo First Strike says he won't give a -blam!-) says otherwise he can basically do whatever the hell he wants to do.

Come to think of it don't Spartans take their orders directly from ONI?

  • 06.20.2012 10:00 PM PDT

I cap fools.

Because "Master Chief" is a more recognizable name for a video game protagonist than "John 117." At least, that's the way it was marketed.

It was so that no random Sergeant could order them around, but an officer still had control. It was to prevent power struggles.

NOBLE team was different because they were their own special spec-ops unit, intended to do insane, crazy -blam!- by any means necessary, up to and including commanding an army or fleet should the proper CO die.

Kurt?

Besides, Spartans are more of a frontline troop, rather than a actual commanding post.

And Fred. Although that might be debatable. Anyway, I think that its because ranks don't matter for a spartan. They just receive orders and carry out the mission. A spartan is just a wind up toy sent to kill.

Actually i think the highest rank was given to a dropout. Fahad or something. He was the highest rank but due to procedural problem he had to go to desk duty.

Come on the guy was disabled due to the enhancement. So stuck to do desk duty. I think he had a decent job, do not know what happened later on.

They were under the jurisdiction of the Army, but as Spartans they were part of the Navy and had Navy ranks.
