The highest ranking Spartans are in this order:

-Carter | Commander
-Fhajad, Kurt and Catherine | Lieutenant Commander
-Six | Lieutenant
-Fred | Lieutenant Junior Grade

Noble Team were Army not Navy.

They were under the jurisdiction of the Army, but as Spartans they were part of the Navy and had Navy ranks.

Were they not under ONI.
Office of Naval Intelligence.
Which i think is the most powerful military group.

I've wondered this. I think when/if John ever meets Fred again then its going to be a bit awkward.

What alot of people here are saying. It's so John follows orders and doesn't give them. Kurt become a Co because he trained the S-III. Fred became a CO because Kurt gave his life to stop the covvies and Blue team needed a CO.

The higher your rank is the longer your sit at a desk giving out orders.

Master Chief is already a rank at which he shouldnt be fighting. He's a superhuman killing machine, not a naval genius.

He also would hit the rank "Admiral" not "General". I can see him leading a ship. But not a fleet. Not multiple fleets.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

Being promoted from the enlisted ranks to officership is near impossible and rarely happens. Since the Chief was effectively drafted, it means he can't be an officer. Officers go through OCS, and are usually college graduates.

Also, being MCPON, which is sort of a goof because the MCPON answers to the Secretary of the Navy and usually handles paperwork and generally is a deskjob in the US Navy, he has the rank to command his unit, the Spartan IIs, each of which is around the rank of a Petty Officer 1st Class. The Spartan IIs were always under the command of an ONI officer or NAVSPECWAR. They weren't trained to be leaders, they were trained to work in a squad/platoon setting.

Now, NOBLE Team and Noble 6 are the exception. Noble 6 was likely given the promotion to LTJG while working on Project Saber in order to get access to classified doccuments and to command the enlistedmen likely doing the fabricating for the project. Noble Team had high ranks because of the nature of the missions, so they could take command of marine and ground units, and overstep the juristiction of low ranking ONI operatives that wanted Spartans to do their dirty work.

So essentially, the Chief is the Chief so he can command other ground units at the squad level, and still answer to ONI and Navy officers when need be. You don't always get ranks because you deserve it in the armed forces, you get what the Joint Chiefs need you to have.

Yes, I AM just that awesome.

MCPON is the highest enlisted rank in the Navy. It may seem like he's halfway up the ladder, but US Navy MCPONs have similar duties as low ranking Admirals.

Why was Johnson only Staff Sergeant (and in his last days, Sergeant Major) for the entire war?
