Subject: Creating threads to create threads.

Therein lies the problem. If people wish to reply for the sake of replying, that is just as bad, if not worse, then threads that accomplish little. It is not the threads that are the problem, but the behavior of the users that promote them. If the userbase truly wanted these threads gone, they would simply not respond to them in the first place.

There is no need to remove problem threads for a flawed userbase.

You know? You're right. I do respond to stupid threads a lot, too. I need to start doing my part in my own cause.

That's why I don't post threads often...I can never think of a good topic. I'm helping your cause.

I like how everyone considers this a problem.

I would love it if I could get some examples of these allegedly problem threads.

Aren't you doing the same thing? Haha.

I suppose it comes off as me doing the same thing but I really wasn't aiming to.

Even people who want better discussions or are critical of the ones I mentioned will respond to these mindless threads if for no other reason, the lack of actual discussion being present and their want of discussing something (anything) at all. The want for any sort of discussion usually outweighs the hate for mindless and stupid conversation.

Feed a pack of hungry lions roadkill, and they will eat it. It's not the lions' faults that they're eating roadkill, it's what they're being fed. It's what they have to eat when they're in the dark room they live in when they're not busy ripping apart and eating each other.

But, given a choice between nice, juicy antelope and roadkill, it will go for the nice, juicy antelope, and recognize that it likes that antelope a lot more than it does roadkill.

But it is not the lions' faults that they eat roadkill when there is nothing else offered.
Lions need to eat. Users don't need to post.
So my analogy wasn't perfect down to the last parallel.

I said the users don't need to respond.

You likened users response to lions eating roadkill to justify why users need to respond.

I said the users don't need to respond.

I apologize in advance for all the crappy jokes I make.

Not only create threads to create threads, but replying just to reply.

Some people just quote and post without adding anything, or they write irrelevant things like "Hot Topic" just to get noticed, and/or increase their post count.

If we still had active signatures, I'd put this quote in them. This really is the fundamental issue I feel that's at hand with the Septagon.

Far too many people feel entitled to post. Yes, of course they can post, but should they? NO. They really shouldn't. I wish there was a way to see how many threads users have made.

It offends many people whenever you suggest the general tone of the forums have "changed" or bring up a "back in my day" but I'm a firm believer in the theory that things have indeed changed. I'd say that the biggest cause for this has to be user titles.

On one hand, I like that people have a small yet clear reason not to be a total idiot on the forums (Assuming they care about titles) and so they strive to be well behaved to hold onto it. That's cool and all, but what really upsets me is people think (and may be right) in assuming that multiple threads earns them fame faster. Obviously Intrepid / Fabled are post-count related. No titles are "thread count" related, though I remember that some always murmur whispers about possibilities that actively posting threads helps in some way.

Far too many people feel they have something everyone else wants to read and discuss. I'll go ahead and mention Reddit here because I honestly love their system, granted it works well when it's not abused. If we could downvote useless threads in the forums here I cannot imagine how much cleaner things would seem. Sure people still may post useless things, but at least we, the community would have some control over what actually catches everyone's eye.

2) Reply to everyone who posts.

The reddit system you mentioned sounds interesting. I've never been on reddit so I'm not sure how it works. But I might look at it then come back here and give my opinion. :-)

Yeah. I was off b.net for a good 5 or so months recently, in which time I became a bit of a redditor. I ended up asking K-mart how the hivemind that is b.net thinks of redditors and I don't think it's good. (Cant remember the nickname).

The system really is nice though. Every thread and comment can be rated, up or down one time. (You can change your "vote" if you want).

So if 10 people made 10 threads at the same time, and lets say they all went 1 ~ 10, the ones with the most "up votes" would be above the others regardless of last posts. You cannot "bump" a post or thread, if you post something well received, people upvote it, and then more people end up seeing said post / thread. Likewise, when someone says something inflammatory, or stupid, you downvote it, and it is quickly sent to the bottom where less people will end up seeing it.

So how would new threads been seen? If this system was implemented wouldn't threads like "Title FAQ" and "Script central" be at the top permanently? All new threads would be at an immediate disadvantage of being beneath a number of well established threads. (Unless I'm misinterpreting the system)

What's to stop people from alt-ing their way to the top of the forum topics?

Every board "sub" has a /new section. Users basically peruse the /new and see things basically sorted by time. There, you go and up/down vote "new" threads so they eventually climb the ladder. It gives you lots of power to see really cool stuff. You can click on "Hot" "New" "Top" "Controversial" & "Saved". Hot are posts from New that have gotten multiple upvotes recently. Top is sorted by day, week, month, year, all time.

Also, certain posts could be "sidebar'd". On a particular sub there is lots of customization on where to designate links and stuff. Generally important information is posted to the right side.

Bye.

So basically every forum would be split with two sub categories, "New threads" and "Popular threads"?
