beginning of First Strike.
Fall of Reach is, because it has the title THE OFFICIAL PREQUEL First strike, however, does not have that title. IT should say the OFFICIAL SEQUEL but it doesnt. They reason why Bungie probably endorsed it is because they felt it was a good story, and probably as accurate as it can get.

Fall of Reach is the prequel of Halo Combat Evolved silly.

There is the fact that bungie themselves stated that the books arent the full, tottally true storyline. Anyone thought of that?

Bungie said they will NOT follow the books story because the books are teh secondary story, the games primary. Just like the Halo Graphic novel, they answer questions not answered in the game stories because they dont need to be covered.

And no, there was no Spartan AR, only the smaller version in earlier books which all marines could use.

THANK YOU

The books are not directly linked to the Halo games.
Not everybody has read the books, this is why Bungie doesn't simply add things that you would have to have read the books to understand. The novels are canon...and they are part of Halo, but it doesn't mean everything in them happened/exists

Bungie has said that the books are canon and are the same "true" storyline, and that they are defining elements of the Halo universe.

If by the Spartan Assault Rifle you mean the MA2B instead of the MA5B, it is not only used by Spartans, it is a cut down version that is lighter.

The Books are canon. They are the same stroyline as the games.

How Stuff Works: Was the "Halo" story fully realized and segmented into different games, or did you take the story as far as "Halo 1" and when it came time for a sequel, build the story from the ground up?

Pete Parsons: The "Halo" universe has an overarching story that is well thought out and was well thought out before "Halo 2." We have roughly 600 years worth of "Halo" fiction, and we know what happens inside of that universe at any given time. The ["Halo 2"] story itself only existed as notes and was really fleshed out. We know ultimately, at least in the "Halo" universe, where humanity came from, where it's going to, at what point in time it comes in contact with The Covenant [the villains in "Halo"] and what happens well beyond that.
"Halo 2" picks up literally right after "Halo 1." But there is still plenty of story in and around that. And you can see some of that in the three novels we have.

How Stuff Works: The novelization of a video game is, well ... novel. Where does Eric Nyland <sic> get the background for his books?

Pete Parsons: We work closely with him on all the stories. So what we do is we have these story arcs of the "Halo" universe, and Eric goes in and says, "Well that's a really good piece to take and here is in a microcosm what I think that story will look like."

EGM: You mention Reach; have you read all of the Halo books?

Pete Parsons: Yeah, obviously the Halo fiction. The overarching Halo universe is crafted here, and then guys like...particularly [Halo book author Eric Nylund] has the job of really fleshing out the bones of that particular story arc.

EGM: So somewhere there's a Halo bible that has the basic storyline, including what goes on after Halo 2?

Pete Parsons: Yes, from the present day to the future.

The Fall of Reach, The Flood, and First Strike are official books. Yes, Bungie had say in their writing. Yes, the writers did some of their own work nothing was published without first receiving Bungie's approval.

Halo Story Page: Would the books make the cut?

Joseph Staten: The books are, for better or worse, part of the canon.

First strike is more fan fic than the other two. The story is really good, but it didnt necessarily happen.
It did actually happen,we dont know what happned between first strike and Halo 2. Who knows where the other spartans are?
So you are telling me, if aliens would attack earth right now, you would not send you BEST soldiers to help defend? That makes no sense what so ever. Spartans are supposed to be the best, why in the world would you not use them? I
Like I said before,we dont know what happned between first strike and Halo 2. They all could have died. Maybe they were on another mission, maybe they just werent on Cairo Station...Who knows?

You dont have read the books to understand the story line, the books fill some of the potholes. If you had to read the books to understand the storyline of the game, than we are talking about an entire different thing
You dont have to read that books to undertsand the game, but they are still directly related to the games...
Some books are, some books arent. Like the Star Wars books, you DONT have to read them to understand the movies. Sure they are related, but does it make it true? Not neccesarily.

Who cares about Star Wars?

they add a bit of background, for example the Fall of Reach. We dont know if that actually happened, but it does add some insight to the spartans.
It is the official prequel. bungie said they are directly related to the games.
I agree with you on that

The game itself rarely references the novels, though.

I can't find the page. Its not the MA2B. it mentions it before they are getting ready to go into one of their fights. I thought it was on the Pillar of Autum either when their gearing up or when they are unpacking the crates of weapons... maybe not that fight but its in there somewhere.
