"What are we holding on to, Sam?"
"That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for."

I'm going to appear like a troll if I don't explain myself. There are many things that are unpopular that I like about Halo 3 and a few popular things that needed work. Despite my criticisms, I doubt many of you like Halo 3 as much as me. I am one of the few who started with Halo 2, but strongly prefers Halo 3.
#1 Flaws of the ranking system
The ranking system had flaws, just as much as Halo 2 did. I posted several threads in the halo 4 forums about possible solutions.
Halo 3 and Halo 2's ranking system both sucked IMO. It shouldn't be impossible to get a 50. 50s are not meant to be worshiped. The point of a leveling system is to play with and against similarly ranked players. Halo 3 made it too easy to get a 50 where boosters would sell them to 10 year olds. Arena was complete fail and I don't know many people who went to it. Most people I know who were good at Halo 2 or 3 just went on to MW2, Black Ops, MW3, ect.
The ideal system would both lower the effectiveness of boosting and remove level skipping. It would still give good players a shot at getting a 50 and be a consistent system that a player could track his personal progress. Imagine a combination system with leveling based on winning, but an exp bar. This exp bar would not start at zero after you level up like halo 2, but instead start at 50/100. That is, every time you level up or down your exp bar goes to the middle of that level. This median system would eliminate ranking down just after ranking up.
Winning will still mean everything. You can't rank up if you lose or rank down if you win. However, if you lose, but have good KD you barely rank down the exp bar. If you win and go negative you barely get up while the player who carried you gets a bigger bonus for his kd spread.
The exp bar would not bleed through and the maximum increase per game could be 25 meaning so it would take at least 100 games to get a 50. This could be adjusted per playlist for a smaller or larger skill gap if needed. This slower system would make it more about your body of work rather than a race to cheat the system with boosting.
Also, I had an idea that only positive games would count towards your exp bar for the first 10 ranks to give everyone a basic training period for each playlist. This would encourage players to give it a shot as well as help very bad casual players have fun ranking up. It would keep KD boosters out of the low levels.
End of my ideal ranking system
This is how I would like to see ranking work in a future halo game. However, after saying all this I don't care if Halo 4's ranking system is just a credit based system. Ranking system isn't why I like Halo 3. That's a bit shallow if you only like a game for its ranking system.
I'm not so sure that Halo 2 and 3 sucked as far as attaining a 50. Getting a 50 is one of my proudest gaming accomplishments; I agree that 50 isn't meant to be worshipped, but it doesn't have to be to earn one. Honestly, it's nice that bad kids will never earn a 50, preventing me from having to play with them and listen to "dood imma beeest at dis game sho come @ me dawg yo u suck" from inexperienced players who think they're good because they reached a rank that's made easier to attain. I like the system you proposed, I'm just saying; 50 is special because your first one is hard to earn. Taking that away might not help so much.
