I've always pictured a month-long space Battle with the 300 ODPs and the home fleet holding out against waves of Covenant ships before they finally fall right about when Halo 3 starts.
Not all 300 ODP's were operational. And based on ODST, we see that a single day after Regret finds Earth, another fleet has already breached Earth, and starts uncovering the Portal.

Hey, let's not forget the Bestarium (Spelling?), which states that only 200 million Humans are alive on Earth.

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

I have been meaning to pop that disc in to see if I remembered right (although I remembered it to be 300 something million), cause the numbers speculated upon on the previous page sounded insanely high. 16 billion left doesn't sound devestating at all, even if 23 billion died. Sure, it's a tragic amount, but it hardly portrays the peril humanity stood before.

But I guess that was retconed too, so that the ONI could build their cool stuff...

Well ONI just kinda pulled MJOLNIR Gen 2 right of their ass so... 343 better address that.

Maybe they developed it over the four years they had between Halo 3 and Halo 4.

Or maybe they had it in development the entire time the Halo series was taking place. Why does the internet think the UNSC and ONI would send their scientists into battle instead of working to better equip the militray?

No there is nothing to adress.

Why is it hard to believe that technological innovations can be made in a short time, especially when you just discovered a shield world full of awesome tech.

People complain UNSC tech is outdated
Now they complain it advances to much.

yet, it doesn't make sense if Earth had 200 million left. It would be severely inconsistent with 16 billion figure left in entire human population after the war. Besides less than 200 million would basically set Earth back to stone age.

And it was stated by Joseph that Covenant only killed mere millions, not billions. There is still considerable large number of population are left on Earth.

Being glassed is worse than being cemented alive, times that by having lava poured on you too. It was bad. Not only did the Covenant want to eradicate us, but they wanted to find the Forerunner artifacts on Earth. The Portal was a big one. Which led to The Ark.

I've never complained UNSC tech is outdated.

Sure, tech CAN be made in a short time. But most of the time it's when you know, the entire nation involved is fine. Not... having cities in ruins and billions of civilians dead on Earth (according to glasslands).

And you know, the fact it took them what... 10+ years? To reverse engineer a Jackal Shield gauntlet, WITH Halsey working on it. Now they suddenly have, or have had a Forerunner ship and reverse engineer it damn quick WITHOUT Halsey, their number 1 forerunner expert?

Reverse engineering tech isn't something that's done really quick.

Some people give Humanity too little credit.

The battle of Sol was largely in humanity's favor, with knowledge of the system, and the slightly understrength 300 ODP's, as well as a Fleet that easily numbered in the thousands ( For example, ONI seemed to have lied about the number of heavy cruisers the UNSC had remaining to throw off the Covenant, as during the battle far more than just 20 Cruisers are shown ). Not to mention the ODP's could fire and reload every five seconds. It is also portrayed in Halo Reach that they can now fire into the atmosphere as well, against targets that bypassed them in orbit.

Of course, I still don't agree that's possible, as an ODP has the energy to end life on a planet, but only 30 ships seemed to have bypassed the ODP's and followed Truth through the portal, the rest of the Covenant fleet seemed to have been wiped out in space. Most likely the greatest Naval victory in UNSC history to date, but that's just my opinion.

As for the remaining human population, I typically side with the argument that Humanity remained in the billions, around 16 by using Halsey's figure in 2511, probably slightly more. Humanity had over 800 colonized worlds under its control, even had Earth fallen, I do not think the Covenant would have even succeeded in the long run with the UNSC having surpassed the Covenant in technology ( The NOVA bomb's, The template for the Infinity, many worlds possessing more Forerunner tech, tech that Humanity actually could understand and learn, unlike the Covenant who simply imitated it ). Of course, I suppose that depends on who may have been killed or what would have been lost if Earth had fallen.

Point in case, Sol was the military end for the Covenant ( Or the Covenant we knew then O.o ), Humanity kicked ass, and now will seem to continue to kick ass, 200+ million or 16+ billion strong.

Halo 3 specifically states the orbital defenses were shattered as well as the home fleet(Which GASP, was the entire Earth Fleet).

Where the heck do you get a fleet of "thousands"? Last I checked, in halo 2 it shows mass numbers of frigates, not cruisers.

I do believe the 800 worlds got retconned.

Also, as stated in canon and here. Many of the ones with forerunner ruins the UNSC didn't get to study them in detail before it got glassed. And the UNSC had to destroy/abandon others (like Sword Base) before they could get anything truly groundbreaking.

NOVA bombs are something they made. Worlds just have forerunner ruins do not auto make UNSC tech better. The template for infinity may have been drafted without the Forerunner tech, unless 343 retcons and says ONI has had a Forerunner ship to reverse engineer and have been working on it many years.

I'd kinda like this evidence that Humanity kicked major ass in the battle of Earth. I believe you are giving humanity TOO much credit. Remember, it only takes a single plasma torpedo to ruin an ODP. And, as stated, the 300 planets were not all online and weren't all on the side of the planet the covenant came from.

No it wouldn't, you are forgetting Mars and the Jovian Moons. Both would be super colonies, especially Mars, and the Covenant focused on Earth.

Also, contrary to popular belief, other colonies outside Sol probably have around 1-2 billion people.

Still "A thousand ships, with a large number of them being cruisers." Flies in the face of "They broke the lunar line. shattered what was LEFT of the home fleet."

Besides, for all we know 30 ships is what was left of Truth's fleet after destroying the bulk of the human one.

I mean, I fairly sure the total UNSC fleet numbers were around a thousand. And then they constantly lost ships to the Covenant. Reach was the military hub and it only had a hundred+ ships regularly there.
