Subject: 343 Guilty Spark says Forerunner and why does Gravemind speak English

Towards the end of Halo 2, either Miranda or Johnson ask 343 about the Halo's. 343's response includes something like "these constructs were built by the Forerunners".

Maybe the Forerunners actually did call themselves Forerunners. Possibly they knew what kind of impact they would inevitably leave behind thousands of years later?

Or maybe 343 was using the literal definition of the term?

And, why does Gravemind speak English? I understand all about the translation software used by the UNSC, but it seems that Master Chief, the Arbitor, and Gravemind all speak to eachother without any problem. Surely the UNSC could not have come up with software to decifer Gravemind.

The Gravemind has listened for thousands of years, to thousands of people. I think he would have time to teach himself English.

The flood absorbed Captain Keyes on the Halo orbiting Threshold. That was when the flood learned to speak English, since the flood share a colective mind and share all information from absorbed hosts. As for the Covenant, they had been studying humanity for quite a time. When the Covenant attacked a UNSC frigate 32 years ago, the Covies sent them a warning in English.

Ok thanks MuDvAyNe *sigh*

If I thought that was the only explanation I wouldn't have posted the question.

Maybe someone else can come up with something alittle more in depth.

The Forrunners question I have no idea about, but I do know Gravemind is a special type of Flood: Hes a Brain Form. Remember in Halo 1 when you saw the Captain in the Control room of the Covie ship all mutiliated in that sack thing. That was a brain form. Gravemind is the same thing. It learns through the same way us humans do. It probably learned English though studying us somehow, either through inspecting MC's thoughts or through our communication.

The gravemind is made up the bodies of the floods enemies and fallen combat forms. He could be speaking either English or whatever the covenant speak.

Ya, I figured it would be something along those lines. I knew he had the capibilities and resources to learn it, but I wasn't for sure.

I have Barbeque Sauce in my veins!

The Gravemind most likely speaks English because of the marines he obsorbed into himself recently since the flood absorb all the memories and abilities of their hosts.(Such as speaking languages) Good point on the monitor calling the Forerunners, the Forerunner , I have no idea why he would do that...unless whatever they called themselves is their language translates to Forerunner in English? Who knows, maybe we'll figure that out in Halo 3. Nice thread.

It's like saying why do grunts scream in english. He may have learned it, but since he a major character they probably just made him speak english so we could follow the story

Well.. that is the obvious down-to-Earth answer, and the real reason why they speak English.

Nice.. Simple and Effective.

lol I was going to say if Gravemind didn't speak english, we wouldn't have heard his threats and we wouldnt do anything, and COrtana wouldn't be confused.

Facts are the enemy of tru7h....

If remember correctly in Halo 1 the Elites actually don't speak English...but i may be misremembering...

As to why Guilty Spark calls the Forerunner, Forerunner, you have to look at why the humans call the Forerunner, Forerunner... Humans learnt the term from the Covenant, who believe that they are inheriting the forerunners legacy. So humans picked up the word for that species from the Covenant and since GS probably learnt English from listening to the Covenant and Human radio transmissions he would use the word Forerunner to describe the species that created him as he knew it would be a phrase that the humans would instantly understand...

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

343 has a database of all languages, I would guess, and Gravemind has 2401, who has a similar database. He's using 2401. That's what I think.

Didn't he say something like "I have watched and I have waited" or am i a hopeless nub? Xbox has been broken for awhile and havn't played in a long time but I think he said that. And I am pretty sure he can not really hear us from thousands of years, but who knows? Lots of Halo Lore is left unfinished, but Halo 3 will explain EVERYTHING!!!
