This is my idea for the D-Pad in Halo 3. I hated how in Halo: CE and Halo 2 the D-Pad served virtually no purpose.

Up: Interact with obstacle/environment
Left: Roll left
Right: Roll right
Down: Lower weapon and allow player to sprint, but not fire

When we first received info about Halo 2, there was mention of the ability to sprint and move faster, but not fire. I think that would have been cool to see. Also, if it lowers your weapon, it would allow machinema creators to continue using that factor to make their movies/shows/vidoes.

As for rolling, my idea comes from watching the marines throughout the game. When someone throws a grenade, they tuck and roll to avoid it. I think it should allow us to do the same thing. I think it should work like this:
Step 1) It lowers your weapon for a brief moment so you can't shoot.
Step 2) It puts you in a quick crouch and moves you to either left or right, depending on which direction you pressed.
Step 3) You can either start moving to stand and run, or hold the crouch button to rise to your knee and start firing again.
I think it should simply show movement from the player's perspective, but when someone is looking at them, they see the roll.
That would be for Spartans. Elites should have the same functions and actions, except instead of the roll, they should be shown doing those huge, crouching sidesteps they do in single player.

As for enviro. interaction, I think it would be neat if we could climb up onto certain ledges, or do like the Elites and put our backs to a wall, or climb on top of a box, rather than jump. It should just be a quick animation, like when you climb onto the back of a Ghost or the back/side of a tank. Your character just grabs the edge and jumps/jerks himself up. Nothing fancy. Plus, I think a lot of people were looking forward to the stealth option of leaning against a wall and peeking around the corner to scope out a room before entering. Even if the up arrow just let you press to the wall and do that, it would be cool.
To get off a wall, you'd just press up on the D-Pad again, and I don't think any of these actions should zoom out to third-person like boarding. It should just show the relocation from the player's perspective, but for people watching/firing at them, it should be a cool action to watch.

Ehh . . . so, whatcha think? Anyone? Also! If you have any ideas for different D-Pad functions, post them here! Maybe Bungie can pluck some ideas from the forums. ^_^ Thanks for reading!

Or, you could push down (or up I suppose) on the D-pad and that would put you up against the wall and you could lean left and right to look around corners, and if you are leaning and then push jump, you could sort of "roll" out of your position. Also, the left and right tuck an rolling thing could work, but I think it would be better used if you pushed to the left and pushed "a" or w/e and you would do your little roll thing.

I dont think we need this aspect in Halo, Halo is after all a action shooter, not a strategy shooter. I love halo because it is one of the few Charge in a blast everyone to hell shooters. Most now require you to take cover, or are soo realistic that one bullet will kill you.

If anything, the D-Pad should be used for possibly commanding your marines to enter/exit vehicles.

I think it should be used to give orders to the AI teammates.

I for one think all the ideas are great. We'll just have to wait till halo 3 comes out till we see what the d-pad does. Ours ideas are pretty useless though since (im not saying they do) they dont really use our ideas to much, except for matchmaking. Plus the games probably got all the code and animations for the d-pad and every other movement oriented action that coiincides with the controller. Plus the one hit die thing is impossible for Halo since the chief has his shields... or maybe in Halo3 there will come a time when his shields break down...... you think about that, hard like.

or what i think would be good is hand signals to teammates for stealth attacks. they might be a little hard to see, but i think it would add a lot when storming a base.

Hand signals seem a little pointless... we need voice commands for that work. :)

XBL: KNIGHTOFDRAGONS

Maybe it could be like this:

Up on the directional pad can be a sprint. Hold it down and it let's you sprint forward, but taking away your ability to shoot or make hard turn.

Down can be commands for Campaign. Hold it down and choose a command using the right-analog stick. While holding it down, you cannot turn. The commands could be Attack, Cover Me, Follow, and Wait. (Although I doubt Halo would need this feature). Down for multiplayer could just be proximity voice.

Left and Right on the directional pad could let you lean to the left or right.

I could care less if they put this in though.

YAY for the roll idea! Another idea is to use the D-Pad for simple Marine commands, such as "follow me" or while in a vehicle "Get in."

Constant state of war, of one, with all.

This is the great thing about the d-pad, we haven't used it before in Halo. So those of us that would like to use commands to the troops, hand signals, sprint etc. have the CHOICE to use it. i for one think that would be great. Especially the aknoledgement lights. All the way brother! Master Chief is always leading people to battle, why not give them some direction? Sprinting would be cool too.
So those of you whining it is not Halo, for the last time it is! The universe is based off sci fi military. Oh no! Thinking! I have to do that in school! Grow a backbone noobs!

or it could always be push down to sprint. left D Pad to lean left right to lean right. Up on the pad would be drop gun. when sprinting you gun goes lower as if you were lokking at someone in Half-Life2 (your gun points down).

Edit: Why is there a poll for nothing to do with the D-Pad?

flashlight on the gun or hand signals. to the guy who said they are pointless, of course they're not, have you never been sneaking into a base with someone and not been able to communicate through fear of giving away your position to the enemy??? silent signals would be brilliant.
