Killing Tartarus is near impossible.

Why? I noticed on the internet that when people play Legendary, they usually wait for his shields to go down, then quickly go all out.

Problem is, Johnson does not penetrate his shield.

He fires two shots, even if they both hit, the shield needs a third.

I have completed Halo 2 on Legendary, this is literally the final hurdle.

Help?

Are you turning on any skulls?

Have you tried using a beam rifle yourself? There's no need to go down to Tartarus. You merely need to go on one of the moving platforms to get Johnson to shoot at him. From there, you can assist with your beam rifle.

There's something I've been meaning to try out (but I can't because I'm occupied with Reach work):

1. kill all the Brutes in the previous room before triggering the cutscene. Pick up one of their weapons, head back outside, find a beam rifle, return. Do this until all beam rifles on the level have been acquired
2. bring a Spectre to the control room
3. do the Elite army glitch until you have enough Elites to give the beam rifles to
4. line them up on the platform next to Johnson, place a bunch on the sides, place 2 on the "windowsills"
5. Head out on the Banshee and intercept or block the brute reinforcements. Now just wait for Tartarus to die

But you probably want something less complex so just bring a Spectre and/or Banshee to the battle. Tartarus' shield doesn't have to go down in order to damage him with these. Also, with the Spectre, you can clone Johnson. I know of a guy who made 200 Johnsons.

I have tried, many times, with the Beam Rifle and strangely the Covenant Carbine, which is also able to pop his shield, after 2 Johnson Beam hits.

I may have to glitch the level...:(

Well then, just bring a Spectre to the control room and clone Johnson.

That must have taken awhile... And lagged. However, you wouldn't have to worry about Tartarus then, he wouldn't be able to handle 200 beam rifles at the same time. OP, you have a winner.

Except they were all kept in the back room. Getting them on Johnson's ledge or to Tartarus' platform would be difficult. Johnson's heavy (so even the slightest movement could cause him to dive into your Spectre, knocking you off the level) and it's a one way trip to Tartarus on the Spectre. Plus Tartarus would probably have been deloaded by then (which makes it impossible to complete the level afaik).

But see for yourself. I wouldn't know as I've only overloaded with Elites.

But it's probably the same thing. Notice at 1:10, the first player dies when diving into a group of Johnsons. That exact same thing happened to me when I was using a Banshee and boosting at a bunch of Elites.
