This must mean that they have hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of people. With this massive population, why do they seem so outnumbered all the time? Why don't they just call back their Marines, they surely can outnumber a Covenant attack. The Covenant won't glass the planet because they know something of importance is there. This evens the field a bit. With their numbers the humans should be able to win this war right?

They were NEVER outnumbered, they were overpowered. Human always outnumbered the covenant 3 to 1, and still lost. On earth, however, its the entire covenant forces vs 1 planet.

Resources are the key. Not just natural resources, ships, weapons, training, bases are all what wins a war.

80 trillion people would still not do a damned thing against a covenant cruiser if they dont have means of attacking.

Numbers haven't won a war in quite some time, it is all about tech now.

And strategy

One shot: one kill, zero seconds to live

the covenant is an alliance with each alien race having a huge population and the majority of their populations serve as soldiers. also the covenant can call in reinforcements faster, that's why it seems that we're always outnumbered. and they have superior battle ship tech

Numbers have won a war though. The American Civil War should have been won by the South, but we were lucky to have the numbers (both on land and navy) to drain the South.

Winning a war requires many things.

the cov usually win the space battle first then flood the planet with dropships combined with superior firepower (which take out the marines faster) leave less humans thus when the spartans get there they are always outnumbered but kicken ass

i thought that the north had superior weapons too. (ex. the gatling gun and repeating rifles)

The humans could never keep up to par with the Covenant in space battles. Their technology was just too advanced for them, that's why they almost always lost. Of course the humans kicked ass when they took battle to the ground.

The problem is that most of those Humans are probably dead. The Covenant Glassed most of those 800 planets. Earth may be the only planet left.

Earth isnt the last. They have glassed most of the outer colonies, but are just starting on the inner colonies. Reach was taken after the fleet bypassed many inner colony worlds. That doesnt meant they wouldnt bypass all the other colonies to defeat the homeworld.

The covenant destroyed the outer colonies by 2535. They have been attacking the inner colonies for 20 years. At the time of Halo 2, Earth may be the only human planet left.

Halo 2 isnt that far off from Fall of Reach. Maybe around 8 months to a year, tops.

ya your not considering what the fact colonized means either...it could mean only a few hundred thousand...I remember reading that a few of the planets that the books visited were only populated with about a few million like 2 or six....granted that adds up but the UNSC I thought i read somewhere had jack -blam!- as far as man power went.

We aren't that populatated we are just more spread out now...kinda like finding the new world...

Im betting 100 billion Max....someone do the math they have done it somewhere there is supposed to be like 25 billion in like 100 years just on earth...or something ive seen them around the net somewhere....

i think its only a about a month. the original halo game only took place over one week and the journey back, about another week or two.

Ok, got my times mixed up. I think that First Strike took a long time, like maybe about 2 months.

The First Strike took place over a time period of two weeks.

i don't think so, it may seem like that it took that long, but it was told from several different perspectives. and that alot happened, but spartans get the job done fast.
