In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Art - the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others.

There are no limits within the definition. An idea isn't art until it's put into a form that can be shared. A tree isn't art, because it didn't take any skill or imagination to make.
So a cookie is in the same category as Starry Night because a preschooler shared it with his buddy and it took skill to make?

Baking is considered an art. :3

That cookie is made by a machine which puts it through itself to "bake" it. It's not a handmade one (which would be art). I'm talking about like an Oreo in a preschooler's lunch.

Yeah but we aren't talking about factory made cookies so I guess that analogy doesn't work as it was not "made" by someone. Then again someone had to design and imagine the cookie for production.

And, I <3 oreos, they are milk's favorite cookie. :p

But we could debate this for a very long time.

It's not that I'm crazy... It's just that, you're not as far out there as I am.

Great games: yes. Yes, they are a composition of both the visual effects and the composition of the music that accompanies the game.

In the broadest sense, yes.

I'd say coding in general is art.

What if Bungie made a game where you make art via the video game?

You can pretty much call any part of the game art. I could crush up a water bottle and call that art. It depends on how you view things. The engine can be art, the music can be art. Its all a matter of opinion and semantics.

I broke one of the cords for my X11s because I couldn't get past the final American course in Doritos Crash Course.

It seems to be that people who make video games are always blown away by the concept artists. You can learn programming but you cant learn imagination, art makes or breaks video games.

Actually, this too, programmers have to be creative even though they have more rules.

I think one of the main points of art is, among other things, to invoke discussion. Looking around this place, it's clear that video games are art.

I <3 you too Bungie

I think calling video games art trivializes the culmination of skills across many disciplines that go into their creation.

Video games don't express anything. You play them.
lol

Get out of multiplayer, play through more good stories.

I view video games as art, and while others may not, it does not affect me.

They are actually. But not that kind of art we are used to.

I didn't cry when I saw the Mona Lisa.

I think video games are more than art.

You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

I don't feel a thing when I look at the Mona Lisa. When I play Halo, the hair can stand up on the back of my neck.
That was beautiful DeeJ.

I become immersed into video games more than I do with most novels and movies, the interaction adds a whole new level to experience something.

How is this thread a "Weekly Community Debate"?

Weekly Community Debate? So we can just post off-topic stuff if it's addressed to the community now?

  • 06.27.2012 11:41 AM PDT

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Deej nailed it! Honestly anything can truly be art.

  • 06.27.2012 11:44 AM PDT

Yes absolutely!

  • 06.27.2012 1:22 PM PDT

In my opinion if it's created by anyone but yourself and makes you feel emotions then it's art.

I agree though, a lot of artist work on video games, but great artists flipping burgers at Burger king, does not make burgers art.
I consider a good burger art...
