Hey folks!

As a big fan of the Halo storyline, one cannot help but ponder some of the BIG questions that seem to be rather obvious in the series.

Halo CE had a fairly deep, but also straight forward and well told story. No questions there. Halo 2 on the other hand? This is where things start getting a bit odd...

First thing is first. The Prophet of Regret. Why did he make a pit stop at Earth before traveling to Installation 05? Even though the portal to the Ark was there, why not stick around? Which leads me to my next question. If all of the Halo rings could be fired from the Ark, why feel the need to travel to Installation 05 at all?

Later in the story, Tartarus was sent to reunite the index with 05's core. Again, if Truth was heading to Earth for the purpose of traveling to the Ark, wouldn't it have made more sense to keep the Chieftain of the Brutes with him? Why send him down to the control room if he was already planning on activating all of the Halo rings?

Next, Cortana stayed behind on High Charity in case Tartarus used the index, which he did. At this point, the Flood were just beginning to invade High Charity, so the Gravemind's corruption had really yet to set in. Why didn't she detonate In Amber Clad's reactors to destroy the city and the ring? Seems like they came awfully close to setting them off for her to stand by and do nothing.

And finally, when did we learn to understand the Covenant? Even Cortana had to translate Regret's wordings to the Chief in the mission "Regret", yet the human soldiers like Miranda and Johnson can understand Tartarus and the Arbiter.

Thoughts? I love putting the pieces of the puzzle together :)

the flood was here.

Well, this IS a question regarding the Halo universe in general. I have issues with the plots of Halo 3 and Reach as well, but I figured I'd start with Halo 2.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

She didn´t want to risk a remote detonation. It seems she underestimated the Gravemind as seen in Human Weakness and she no longer had the capability of detonating In Amber Clad. She wasn´st sure if the Flood were going to be able to over take the whole city and get away with it like they did, but the Covenant forces in orbit were fighting the Flood from the ring and among themselves. They were too busy to notice High Charity being taken over.

And finally, when did we learn to understand the Covenant? Even Cortana had to translate Regret's wordings to the Chief in the mission "Regret", yet the human soldiers like Miranda and Johnson can understand Tartarus and the Arbiter.

That transmission was heavily encripted. It took time for even Cortana to crack it and to read it. UNSC soliders have translators that are capable of translating Covenant talk. Plus, it´s something that shouldn´t be too looked into, as it´s just a minor aspect in the whole game.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

IIRC, Regret discovered Earth's location in Halo: First Strike and sent his fleet there. many of the ships were destroyed and Regret's was the only one to actually make it through Earth's orbital defenses.

How he discovered Installation 05, I can't remember. I'm not sure that was even explained, however I don't think he knew that the Ark was there, it was when his ship made the jump that the slipspace rupture revealed its existance.

Truth had his own personal army of Brutes so Tartarus wasn't really needed, and the Forerunner Keyship wasn't even close to being scratched by humanity's dwindling defenses. If Tartarus failed, Truth would have a backup plan.

I believe Hipi07 gave a good answer for this.

And finally, when did we learn to understand the Covenant? Even Cortana had to translate Regret's wordings to the Chief in the mission "Regret", yet the human soldiers like Miranda and Johnson can understand Tartarus and the Arbiter.

In Halo: First Strike, Cortana discovers a means to translating the Covenant language and installs it into translators. Miranda, Johnson and Hood would all have neural implants so they could have the software downloaded too.

This assumes they all knew where 05 was before. Regret jumped from Earth (I remember he hadn't predicted humanity was there thus didn't come prepared), and reached 05. (Whether this is random or not I don't think is said). After he sends a message to High charity, THEN the rest arrive at 05.

Truth sent Tartarus to activate the ring, while he himself went to the Ark. Either way in the plan, the ring would fire. Or maybe Truth expected Tartarus to be foiled, and to send the rings into standby mode? Cause remember, it's not until AFTER they remove the index 343 comments how the rest got sent into standby mode ready for remote firing from the Ark.

Cortana may have been blinded to the ring readying to fire, or she may have been waiting for it to start the final firing sequence before destroying In Amber Clad.

I was considering the "Standby mode" too, but the first time the rings were fired, it was done from the Ark. I don't think placing them into standby mode is necessary.

Well, I remember reading a final log of Didact (I think) in the control room of a halo ring before it fired.

Though, in the original firing against the flood they might've had them set to standby automatically for the plan.
