Yep, this one has been around a while but good job on deducting it yourself.
Another point, the Ark held every creature so what is to say the Forerunner didn't place DNA from other components of the food webs from various planets into the Ark. Without other biological support the Forerunner children would die.
There would need to be an ecosystem - all the creatures would have to return.
could the ark be/contain a garden?
(I personally believe that in halo, the Ark is a representation of both Arks in the Bible)
If the Ark in halo contains anything, I would guess that DNA would be on the list of probables.
But a garden?
I find that to be a bit of a stretch. Possible, but a stretch. Stored DNA (or even high-fidelity digital copies of the DNA) would make it more convenient than housing a self contained ecosystem for a hundred thousand years.
