Its amazing that a company that depends on its customers buying its products has such an ego that it has no intentions of listening to its fans. News flash, we can't just play Halo:CE, cuz you never made it live enabled. And please don't bring up XBC, cuz it doesn't even compare.
Now watch as i get banned for my opinionMLG is a minority in the gaming community. If all MLG Pros along with hardcore MLG enthusiasts boycotted Halo 3, it would barely make a dent in the sales. If the game is fun, then people will buy it.
Not listening to fans can be detrimental, but going along with the demands of a small, outspoken percentage can be even worse.
As for Halo on XBL, I'll quote Phrost (who, as far as I can tell, is an avid fan of MLG like yourself):

Thats why they invented lanning :]
no offense, but i never said i liked MLG. It was just a broad statement about the attitude i've seen from many Bungie staff about what fans like and dis-like in their games. I do prefer Halo:CE, but also like halo 2. Obviously, H2 has many issues, and some have been addressed while others are just something we'll have to live with. In his post, he wasn't just saying MLG, he was saying anyone that doesn't like their game can play the previous ones, which is a bold statement for their amount of customer service and appreciation. Also, LAN? Not the same as LIVE, everyone knows it, and so this should not be mentioned as a substitute when talking about LIVE. Besides, not everyone knows a group of people who they can just " get a LAN party going"
