I don't understand how the pistol is the best weapon in halo? Why would they make it so overpowered? What are your thoughs on the pistol?

The sidearm argument may have won in H4 mp but it better not win in H4 cmp.

I find it disturbing that instead of hastening reload times and weapon switching time (as Reach weapon times were severe), we get a power up for that. But, it is probably mp exclusive. What happens to the campaign weapons?

Also, I find it funny how Reach troopers are now just 'moving ammo' and how it's possible to get infinite ammo by emptying the clip and giving the weapon to the trooper. Bungie took out backpack reload and cancelling all sorts of animations (to hasten the reload process, switching, etc.) yet they left this intact?!

H2's successors have been super slow. Movement speed, cqc, reloading, etc.

The same people who think the Halo: Combat Evolved pistol is a side-arm are the same people who judge books by their cover. It does not function as a side arm at all. People just see pistol and think of it as that. If it were modeled as a rifle those people would be 100% fine with it.

The pistol wasn't over-powered for one simple reason: It wasn't as easy to get a 3sk as it is to get a 4sk/5sk on the more recent iterations of the game. It actually takes a skilled player to land 3 shot kills on the regular bases on Halo: Combat Evolved when on 2 - Reach it only requires you to be average at the game to do it.

Having a utility weapon that can beat any other weapon if you're good enough to use it is great for skillful gameplay. If everyone starts out with a weapon that's only capable of being useful when someone has great skill at the game creates the perfect atmosphere for competitive play. It's even so hard to use for people of average skill that most will agree the rest of the sandbox is much more useful than the later sandboxes in the franchise.

Just keep in mind that the pistol is not a "sidearm" just because it looks like a pistol. Try to imagine it as a rifle and it seems absolutely fine. People need to stop being so skin deep when it comes to this stuff...

This changes my view of it haha. Interesting. Although pistols are sidearms and not as strong as rifles. The pistol is actually not even a pistol but a utility weapon? Hm.

You could also look at it as a futuristic Desert Eagle. Even pistols in real life can be amazingly powerful. They're not all 9mm side arms. :P

I miss the CE pistol. :(

It was a work of art. It didn't have to be used as a powerhouse or utility. That was purely optional.

It's memorizing gun fire sound had it's own authority. I could fire 2 shots from behind cover and find 2 Elites facing the other way for easy assassinations. I could control AI patrol movement! I could lead Elites to their deaths!

Psychological manipulation nowadays is just sad. The AI are designed to fall for Hologram. The AI are setup for easy assassinations. The AI will be onto you if you do any action other than a simple fist. There are no provisions to do anything when the player jumps on a Hunter or drives a vehicle into the Hunter.

There's never any opportunity to turn a normally loud firefight into a stealth run. Flanking is also rare.

Creating art in Reach is extremely difficult/inconvenient/lame and even when it's accomplished, it just makes gameplay look sad.

That I had to block Jorge just to get these easy assassinations at the beginning of the video.

It's amazing how one elaborate blockade can screw up the AI. 2 normally overwhelming Ultra Elites assassinated within 2 seconds. But it took me 30 minutes on Easy, just to setup the blockade, because of stupid things like 10 second countdowns.

Black Ops 2 I run two accounts warmup only at 1.97kdr...real is at 3.77. i'm in master division 4 league play. pm 4 clan inv...must have 2.5 kdr or better

From what I've read, every weapon in Halo 1 was equal. Pistol and AR stood a chance against power weapons while the plasma rifle could slow a player down and the plasma pistol had more ammo. I believe they say the needler was uesless and that's about it. I've always been told that everything was pretty balanced, but I really never got to play Halo 1 since I bought it after I got Halo 2.

I think the plasma rifle could also affect turning speed.

IIRC, the plasma pistol bolt costs 0.02 battery, the overcharged bolt costs 0.1 battery. While the plasma pistols in other Halo games cost 0.04 battery and 0.15 for overcharged shot.

I haven't seen the needler ever being used in mp but I know that it's a monster in campaign.

Slow multiple super combines with an actual damaging blast radius > instant supercombine that only kills 1 target at a time

Well it's more reliable than the Reach Needler. That thing can't kill anything but Grunts.

Based on campaigns

Halo 2 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo 3 > Reach/CE tied

Have you tried it against brutes? It kills them in about a second! Next time your in Reach, play through Exodus on easy and rampage through with a needler. You will see how much that thing destroys the brutes.

Have you tried it against brutes? It kills them in about a second! Next time your in Reach, play through Exodus on easy and rampage through with a needler. You will see how much that thing destroys the brutes.
It also killed them in a second in H3 and H2. I wasn't impressed.

Brutes are the lowest of enemies, which is why I didn't bother mentioning them.

Needler ranking with all enemies in consideration:

CE > H2 > H3 > Reach

Explanation...
CE: versatile, multiple targets affected thanks to blast radius and EMP damage, art. multiple supercombines on dead and alive enemies.
H2: allies could still get supercombines, multiple supercombines into one living enemy. When dual wielded, quite powerful. When single wielded, artless.
H3: artless. Enemies try to dive from it. Only good for killing 1 enemy at a time. Return of multiple supercombines on dead bodies but it's difficult due to instant detonation.
Reach: same as above but now supercombine doesn't work on Elites if they still have shields.

Furthermore you said Easy. Heroic or nothing.


Also, The CE Pistol is called a Pistol, but in Halo 2 it's called the Magnum. Magnums are stronger in real life. While still pretty good, it's extreme ammo appetite and lack of ammo replenishment's caused it to be discarded in both MP and Campaign.

I really enjoyed the CE/2 Needler, but the Halo 3 needler was nerfed too much. Not only was it decreased in size, but the Ammo sizes were also struck hard.
