Alright, here goes. This has been on my mind for several days now and it's finally got to me. I've been noticing a trend lately, even after the eventful announcement of Halo 2 for Windows Vista there has been serious whining going on in this forum.

To begin, enter my first interaction with this community. As you can see from my join date, I've been here a while, I've seen members come and go, some amazing people (and not so amazing people). When I first came everyone was enthusiastic about Halo, we were all still reeling over the release of Halo 2, some of us were a bit bitter that the game hadn't come out for PC/Mac, but we understood for the most part that Bungie was simply "doing their thing", and we knew they'd eventually come through for us.

Many of the forum members were excited over Halo Custom Edition, as many new maps were still coming out, and the CE community was still vibrant. We all knew Halo PC had its share of faults, hell, we thought, what game doesn't...But we didn't complain, sure, every now and then we had a few good discussion threads over what Gearbox should put in a hypothetical "update". But for the most part we didn't complain; we were content enough with crappy net-code, and a game with amazing game-play that we just couldn't live without.

Many months later, some of the original members of the Maw who I first met were still there, and yet others had left too. Many new people came, were warmly greeted, and became a staple in our small community. Some of them complained a bit about Halo PC's problems, some people blamed Bungie, others Gearbox, even other blamed Microsoft. We asked: Where are our patches for Halo PC, why isn't the game being fixed?!. As our pleas mostly met deaf ears some grew angry. We were getting tired of Bungie. Had they abandoned their old friends?

But at this point, Halo 2 was already aging, it was still extremely popular, an endless source for the discussion of story theories or multiplayer strategies but we were still playing ol' Halo PC. Some members grew a little tiresome at this point. Not quite apprehensive, but definitely a little worried. No one had any news whatsoever on when Halo 2 was coming out for the computer. So we twiddled our collective thumbs and waited for any news at all...and waited...and waited.

Leading up to the announcement of Halo 2 Vista, people were well past angry. Flame-wars erupted in many threads "claiming Bungie abandoned us" and the lack of support for Halo PC was no assurance. Sure, it was already a problem that Gearbox had not updated Halo PC for ages, but it was made worse when people were more disturbed that there was no news about Halo 2 Vista.

Flash to the present. FINALLY! It's here. Halo 2 Vista. We Rejoice! But wait...what's this? People are angry? They say "it should've come out for XP"...."MS is being a profit BLAM!" Finally getting Halo 2 is not enough, it was too late perhaps, most of the community was already bitter, not getting Halo 2 the way some of us wanted pushed us over the edge, we blamed Bungie...and we still do.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sound like a bad dream? I've honestly had enough of people whining and blaming Bungie for everything. Bungie has brought us our favourite game (or else you wouldn't be here) and all we can tell them is "you let us down". I just don't want to see any more of this attitude. It's downright childish and immature. I would never name names but if I hadn't seen a lot of this going on I wouldn't have made this thread.

Now I know what some of you are thinking. "Old jman has finally gone off his rocker, yep; he's fallen behind the times". Well I may be old-fashioned, (odd, I'm not that old...) but I know what I see and it's not in the true spirit of the community. I rarely see the enthusiasm anymore, the love for the game...

Bungie is bringing us Halo 2 Vista, we should all be happy. But instead all we have is a critique. It doesn't have to be this way.

I must absolutely agree with you, jman.

People! Listen! Bungie is going to give us Halo 2 for PC! We wait so long for this, and then we complain about it? It's like Exodus in the bible, the people of Israel wait so long for deliverance from the Egyptians, and then they complain when they have their freedom! The same thing is going on right now.

Let them do their stuff and appreciate it.

Yes, but people like me can't afford a Vista, and cannot even convince their parents to get them a Vista for a late graduation present (I'm having my middle school graduation in 2 weeks, I'm entering high school this September, just so you guys know what I mean by "graduation present"). I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing out a fact here. Yes, Bungie's incredibily nice to give us Halo 2 for the PC, but Microsoft just had to ruin our excitement by announcing it on Windows Vista. As Master Kim said in the "whats microsoft vista" thread, DX9 is still good enough to run Halo2PC amazingly. I get the feeling that while all of you guys (I'm assuming most of you are AT LEAST 16+, I'm only 14...) have Vista and is enjoying not only Halo2PC, but all those other awesome games such as Crysis, while me and a few others are forced to wait 4 more years for a job to upgrade to Vista, by ourselves.

Please don't take my post the wrong way, I'm not complaining here, I'm just explaining the downside of the launch of Halo2PC and Vista...well, at least for me that is. Sorry if this post contains a bit of a rant, I tried not to include any. Sorry for any waste of your time to read my post...=/

Oh it's fine. Everybody can understand, but no one is going to sympathize if people go "OMFG MICROSOFT SUX BIG HAIRY FRAG GRENADES FOR MAKING US PAY SO MUCH JUST TO RUN HALO 2 PC!!!! ARRRAGGGHAHGHGHIDIDYOURMAWMLASTNITEINBEDARRRARH!!!!!!!!!!!&qu ot;[/quote] People need to understand how lucky they are and how grateful they should be.

People need to stop complaining and realize that this stuff isn't supposed to be cheap.

Sorry Kim...I didn't know my post will tick you off, I tried hard not to put any baby complaints in there, I tried to be as intelligent as posible, so you guys will actually read the downsides...well, sorry for complaining Kim...

Im with Master Kim and Jman at first it kind of made me upset that I had to buy a whole new program to play H2PC however I found out that I can play it without vista (I think?) I have XP pro and Direct X 9.0 what some people are mad about is that you have to buy a whole new system, well bungie is getting the thought from people make H2PC better than xBox! I personally think the graphics on H2xBox are good but bungie wanted H2PC graphics and things WAY BETTER like some people said, (this is to everyone who said text make H2PC better than Halo2 for xbox!) Of course you would need the proper technology for the game to show those better graphics and things on the game, I say this to everyone: You wanted it and you got it but now complain about buying a new system yet you want better things for the game, well guess what, you need a better system for better things!
Yeah I dont think ill have a chance at getting vista and I really want H2PC, I was lucky enough to get XP pro with DX9.0 it would make me a little upset that I had gotten something to play H2PC but find out I have to pay more than what I have to, besides I was thinking from google that H2PC would be made for DX9.0 without vista, like you said Master Kim "Halo 2 will run greatly on DX9.0 but you will need vista to run it" I dont have a chance at getting vista I'll probably just buy H2PC try it out, and (my trick is with my mom) she'll see that im upset and will maybe (ill have to convince hard) buy vista, *sigh* the only thing I can hope is Ipjuunin gets vista as a graduation present and that H2PC will work for me even without vista.

Yes, and people need to realize that putting H2PC with the new OS is a good thing. With DX10 and all, it will make H2PC a greater experience than it would be on older OS's, and it will overall pwn the Xbox experience.

can you give me a summary of that i'm to lazy to read it all. sorry :)

Heh, it's alright. It's pretty long. Basically I'm calling upon this community to stop criticizing Bungie for the way they are handling things in terms of Halo 2 Vista, and the support for Halo PC. There has been a lot of unnecessary negativity towards Bungie on this forum even though they're doing an amazing job thus far.

And in response to lpjuunin, I understand your dilemna but it is true that sooner or later we're going to have to move to Vista, now I'm not going to say it was entirely coincidental that Halo 2 Vista's developements schedule coincided with the launch of Windows Vista, but it is for the better. I myself couldn't play Halo PC till I upgraded my graphics card (my old MX440...ahhh the memories). With Microsoft having to set back the release of Vista even further I'm sure you'll have even more time to save up. And once Halo 2 PC comes around I'm sure you'll have close to or enough money.

There's no shame in not being able to play Halo 2 Vista the minute it comes out.

Nope, no shame at all. I waited for a year after Halo Mac came out to buy it, hoping the price would go down. And it didn't. It's still $50.

I agree with jman571's call to stop the ranting. But, I would like to know about the future of Halo 2 Mac. A definite Yea or Nay from Bungie would be great.

I complain bitterly about halo PC because I dont want them to make the same mistakes.

Imagine getting halo2 and having it lag like a mofo, and have the rampant Tkers and AFK's in? Fun? No, hence why I complain.

Im still preying they dont make it peer to peer rather than having a dedicated server. If MP is done the same way it is on the Xbox, we are screwed (or rather anyone who isnt in or near the US is).

The few, the proud, the leet.

lmao, people are complaining about both Vista and the relative suckyness of PC/CE? Come on people, make up your minds. You want it to be relatively sucky like PC/CE, then you can get it ported across multiple PC platforms to ensure that most everyone will have a merry time with the game, or you can get it on Vista and it will be supported, ported very well, be optimized, and very nice. You get one or the other and you dont get to make the choice.

PC/CE is the way it is because MS ordered the wide hardwarebase AFTER GBX signed on for it. You can tell very well that GBX is good at what they do. Take a look at the maps they made for the port. That's a good indication of what they had in mind; Dial-up connections weren't. They had rock-hard broadband netcode ready, but they had to rewrite it to include dial-up. You can even see the preformance increase in CE over PC because of its very nature.

If H2V were released across XP/NT/2k/etc. and Vista, you'd end up with pretty much the same thing.

Very true. I just got HPC about 2 months ago. I had thought about getting it earlier, but i already had Halo for xbox and my computer was crap then. i borrowed a friends disk and i liked the game so i bought it for myself. luckily the price has gone down to just $20.

  • 06.13.2006 11:02 AM PDT

lol

I didn't even know what Vista is.. and still don't really know that much.

Can anyone actually explain? I thought this would be the appropiate thread.

im afraid im gonna have to confiscate your testicles.

What are you, the Cyber police? lol.

Its a new computer system (as so ive learned) its fit enough to allow direct x 10, which you would need for H2PC however DX9 and (maybe) DX8 would be ok on H2PC, vista is supposably to come out when H2PC comes out which is early 2007.

Oh, I wasn't ranting about you, Ipjuunin, lol. I was just saying that we all understand that not everybody can afford Vista to play H2 PC, let alone a system that can handle the requirements.

Microsoft's Windows Vista is the new operating system coming out 2007, and it will utilize DirectX 10, basically meaning photo-realistic graphics that can accurately simulate the surface of Mars.
