Subject: Suggestions for Forum Changes | Bungie.net

Come on over to Moving Up for your primary help and Q&A source.

"A wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to."

I've been a member of bungie.net for a little while now, and there's a few things I'd like to see implemented into the forum and I'm sure there are things people would like to see on the forums.
_________________________________________________________

One Username Change
Any account made before the "Hawtness" could be allowed one name change and only one name change. Any account made after the "Hawtness" is stuck with the name it is signed up with.
_________________________________________________________

Multi Quote
Allows you to easily quote and reply to multiple people. Alongside "reply" would be "Multi quote". Clicking this would add them to your multi quote list, then clicking reply would have the quotes all in one text box so you can easily reply to the selected people (works like most other forums). Perhaps a limit to the number of quotes would prevent spamming
_________________________________________________________

Toggle-able Notifications
Ability to receive notifications for specific forum-related responses and be able to toggle certain notifications on and off, including:
* Being replied to on a forum thread.
* Replies on a forum thread you have created.
* Posts on a forum thread you have posted in.
* All of the above in private groups.
* Receiving a new message.
_________________________________________________________

Post History
A place on your profile that would allow you to look at your entire post history, in chronological order from newest to oldest, displaying both topic posts and thread replies.
_________________________________________________________

Regional Settings
Be able to change your settings so that the forum displays activity dates and times correct to your region. For example, it is 06/07/2012 01:00 AM GMT where I am, but the default for this forum is in PDT.
_________________________________________________________

Bungie Toolbar
A Hot Topics tab would display the top ten topics going (like we have now) and displays up to five of the currently active hot topics in the necessary forum you're in. Then there could be a Notifications Tab which displays the notifications we both mentioned, plus the link to your inbox. Lastly, a Newsfeed tab with the latest Bungie news, twitter feed e.t.c.
_________________________________________________________

Improved Message System
A better message interface that allows you to do more than the current message system. There would be an option to send a message to multiple recipients, and ability to switch to conversation mode when messaging a single person.
_________________________________________________________

Change Prefix
Members have the ability to change their title prefix to any of the prefixes they qualify for. Bar colour and title stays the same. Doesn't apply to forum ninja's.
_________________________________________________________

More Base Titles/Title Bar Colours
More titles for those that have been consistently active past the stage of Mythic. For example, new titles and bar colours for members who are consistently active for 3-4 years, 4-5 years and 5+ years.
_________________________________________________________

Private Group Customisable Title Bar Colours
An option in private groups found by the member "roles" that can be changed by group admins. The title bar colour overrides any existing title bar colour while the user is using the private group forums and is black by default (not dark black, see link for details).
_________________________________________________________

Spoilers
Some forums allow for people to consolidate a chunk of text into a small line which can then be opened/closed to drop the text down. This is good for posts that contain multiple sections with lots of text (example; this post!) and can save space and the need to scroll for ages. To prevent spam, spoilers wouldn't be allowed to contain more spoilers but would be allowed to contain quotes.
_________________________________________________________

Thread Views
This is visible by only the OP and allows them to see how many members have viewed the thread they have made and appears next to the replies, for example:
Example Thread | 7 Replies | 77views
Although this doesn't technically add anything to the forums, it's good for OPs that want to know if their thread is being viewed, and how frequent.

Thanks everyone who's replied and given valuable feedback and suggestions.

Feel free to suggest more.

We miss you Logan.
Ask any question. I'll help with anything on site or off.

I like my user name, but for others one user name change.

Those are some interesting suggestions. However, I don't want to be THAT guy, but here is an extensive list of suggestions that have been made. Feel free to check them out.

Actually a bunch of suggestions I want are listed there :)

Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar.
tenn' Ambar-metta!

I don't like the idea of the embeding thing, the forums would be flooded with those things and it could be even laggy, specially in the flood.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

No offense OP, but I really don't want any of the features you suggested to come to fruition. I think there should be a very limited process to change ones name, but being able to do so every 7 days totally defeats the purpose of even having a name. Most of us would keep our names static so people know who we are. The only reason to use it that often would be to cause some mischief. I could deal with a name change once a year, but any sooner than that is not worth it IMO.

I personally HATE emotes thus would not want to see them at all on the boards. This is just a personal choice. I can do without seeing a constant steam of visual vomit.

Ditto for embedded images and videos. Eventually the community could probably handle that feature, but not anytime soon. It would primarily be used to cause mischief. Frankly, I don't want to deal with it both as a user looking it the visual diarrhea, and as a mod banning all the idiots abusing it.

Though, that's just me. Don't let that stop you from advocating what you want to see on the boards.

I want a fixed search feature, outbox, bungie.net friends list, in-house account system, toggle-able notifications, complete post history, and Qbix to be banned.

All I want is for private groups to get some much needed love, and some tiny improvements here and there....and some upgrades to messaging.

Name changing is silly. Stick with the one you picked. Your username and your avatar are part of your Forum Identity along with your writing style and thoughts/opinions. Since 3/4 of that are easily changed and 1/2 (opinions and avatars) is likely to change frequently while you're on this site, let's keep that remaining 25% binding and final.

Icons and smileys, as I've said before, in an actual, drawn, or animated format would make this perfectly crafted and completely custom forum look second-rate and unprofessional.

:), ;), :P, and :\ are pretty much all you need to convey emotion and whether or not its sideways, upright, animated, or text-based does not change the emotion it conveys.

Direct Embedding is one of the very few suggestions that comes up in the Community Forum where an argument of "It could/would be abused" is legitimate and logical. Think of how easy it would be for an OP to just post 100 pictures of two dudes doin' it as their OP. How much worse than a shock site is that, do you think? I'm hovering somewhere between 1000% worse and 10,000% worse.

in-house account system
Now, I'm no expert, but doesn't this lead to problems with retrieving game information from and linking to your gamertag? I think Achronos said something similar to that once.

I could be wrong. Probably am. If so, please feel free to correct me.

Good point actually. It's a shame so many members on here would abuse these features (like the visual diarrhea/vomit as you say). The every 7 days thing was just playing on the 7 thing but once a year makes more sense.

Maroon 5 is awesome. Deal with it.

A more obvious notifaction when you get a new message. Sometimes its easy to miss.

But thats just me

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.
~M.D~

I wouldn't want a friends list truly, it's probably just something everyone would compete over "whoever has the most friends is the coolest"

I wouldn't mind having our game stats a page/tab on our Bnet profile instead of having them on our background, but that's just me.

Maybe a user name change option.

I've added a "regional settings" idea to the main post. I'd like to see dates and times in GMT, as I live in the UK.

Region settings I agree with.

It's standard issue on any starter-kit forum like vb, phpbb, etc.

Woah! I was cited as a reason for redaction? Sweet.

Also, if notifications are added, I think that somewhere over there---> should be a Bungie Toolbar.

A box about the size of the current ad (that links to the Community Forum) with different customizable tabs. In each would be different kinds of notifications (quotes, posts in your threads, messages, etc.), top forum topics, bungie twitter feed, and anything else you could need quick access to. I had a thread about it before, but I can't find it.

Well you made a very valid point, and to be fair I doubted those ideas would go down well with the community anyway. Also, a Bungie toolbar would be great to consolidate all the aforementioned features that would make a good addition to the forums. Perhaps three tabs with different features in each, to keep things simple and easy to use;

A Hot Topics tab would display the top ten topics going (like we have now) and displays up to five of the currently active hot topics in the necessary forum you're in. Then there could be a Notifications Tab which displays the notifications we both mentioned, plus the link to your inbox. Lastly, a Newsfeed tab with the latest Bungie news, twitter feed, perhaps some other things e.t.c. If you find the thread you created, post us a link :)
