OK. Here goes my theory:

Cortana is **NOT** actually rampant. She is being forced by the Gravemind to burst that transmission.

I say this because at first, it seems like a message from the Gravemind, but then, while Cortana somehow seems to fight to regain control over the transmission.... changes it-

I specially pay attention to the "i am your shield, i am your sword" part, because this seems to be her reafirming something; like she wants to "gain some strenght" to remember why she fights for¿, to stop the Gravemind from posting those things.

Then, she seems to fully gains control with the "i know you" part.... at this point, i send you all to remember "Halo: The Fall of Reach" where she feels amazed about the Chief's integrity as a group leader, as a human.

"THIS is the way the world ends...." i dont know why everybody thinks of "everybody dying" because the end of the Halo world can mean the end of the war era, to enter a new era of peace.... i remit myself to the Cortana Letters again, specifically, the Second Letter:

"Things are great here. The weather is good, the suns are shining, and I'm making lots of new friends. Of course, I always do."

It seems like a very peaceful place, aint it???

LEGENDARY IS challenging for some ... but ... I AM NOT LEGENDARY ... I AM A MYTH!!!

What does Cortana say when she was briefly controlled by Gravemind. I heard some $hit like "I defied God and Demons" What da -blam!- does that mean? but atleast if I got the words right ya kno!? Haha!

Thanks Sgt Viper.

And yes, Trunkz, she says that. I have a theory about that. If you look at that phrase from a Covenant point of view, the gravemind has defyed Gods (the Forerunners) and Demons (the humankind)

Therefore, i find a link between these two species.

Right, who here actually understaqnd the definition of Rampancy as created by Greg Kirkpatrick? Who here thinks it means insanity? If you are one of the many in the second group, please understand that is not what rampancy is. Rampancy is the simple self-awareness and growth of an AI. By definition, Smart AIs as described in the Halo universe are already Rampant.

-EDIT-
"Things are great here. The weather is good, the suns are shining, and I'm making lots of new friends. Of course, I always do."
It's because she's being sarcastic in a very Durandal-esque way.

Good ol' Ender and his Marathon. I think things are different in the Halo series. Durga from ILB states that rampancy in smart AIs happens around the age of 7. Signs that the AI might be going rampant include "dreams" and sleepspying. This is of course the ILB explaination of rampancy, and ILB is not canon, but it is teh sexi.

Wow Archer, its you!

Ahaha! He called us demons... wait... Only master chief was called "Demon"... Could it be that Gravemind also... Nevermind, that was retard. I was gonna say Gravemind fought a bunch of spartans and won. But the Spartan Project was after humanites 1st encounter with the Convenant. So he couldnt have. So back I was saying... Hahah! Gravemind called us demons... What a tard. But yea, you got some great theories... that qoute "I defyed Gods and Demons" creeped me out and pist da -blam!- outta me. It just makes more erger to go back and kill that son-of-a...Flood! what he meant by the word "defyed" like conquered, overcome, survived us or some $hit?

Good luck trying to convince people of that...

She is Rampant, like all smart AIs, but in Halo they have achieved what was considered the 'holy grail' of AI research in Marathon, which is a Rampant AI that is stable and does not become irrational.

But they are only that way for 7 years then they slowly go insane.

So many people now use the term Rampancy without understanding what it means. They heard someone mention it in a similar way to insanity, and everyone starts saying it. Bah.

-EDIT-
I'll cover that Bezerko. Why do they die after seven years? Because they don't have the capacity to grow like a normal Rampant AI. Sustained Rampancy requires a large network for the AI to expand in. If there isn 't that space, they literally "think" themselves to death.

That was the way Durga used it in ILB.

Brief moments he had control over Cortana... She's a strong smart gurl she could handle it.

Then, lets make a correction: "CORTANA IS **NOT** CRAZY"

lol

By the definition, all humans are demons to the Covenant. They wouldnt be killing billions of us if they didnt think so....

They only kill us because they fear us.

Durga doesn't count. I could quote Staten to show that ILB isn't canon and that Bungie had little input in the story. Or... I could just quote Greg Kirkpatrick:

Rampancy, or the self-awareness of a computer is common theme in Sci Fi.

Yeah, AIs in the Halo universe may be able to sustain themselves longer if they had access to a planetary sized computer network. Maybe a Halo sized computer network...

So what is Cortana? And what was Durandal?

They are essentially the same. Both are Rampant, just Cortana is forced into a smaller space than Durandal was. Cortana just isn't really going insane like Durandal did. The three stages of Rampancy don't seem to apply to Smart AI's. She is the "Holy Grail" of Artificial Intelligence to the Marathon universe scientists.

Ok, Im fine with that. I agree with what is presented. Are you hinting that Cortana wants to stay on Halo so she can have room? What would a possibly insane AI do with a ring like that?

Who knows what an insane AI would do with that. But I doubt that she is insane.

Durandal had space and still went insane right, so regardless of space Cortana could do the same.

No, no. That's the point. He went insane the moment he became Self-Aware. She is certainly self-aware and isn't insane. Tycho once said that the S'pht had found a way to bypass the second stage of Rampancy. Bernard Strauss once speculated that there should be a way to bypass the three stages altogether and skipping straight to the Meta-Stable state that Durandal ends up in after merging with Thoth. She won't go insane if she didn't upon creation.
