Quite simple, Im not. Basically with halo2 on xbox, if your in the UK most game you have in matchmaking will be unbalenced, because Americans usually get host, and the lag is almost unplayable.

Several of my friends no longer play due to this. I have also seen the effects of it.

Dedicated servers have proven time and time again to be the best way to have multiplayer games.

Unless its a huge increase over halo2 xbox, its going to be just as crap as it was before. If your not in america or near, most games you get suck.

I dont want to have to organise friends at a certain time just to play a quick lagless game of halo2.

Dommer has already hinted that its going to be using peer to peer. [link] http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=6452065&po stRepeater1-p=2&postRepeater1-p=2 [/link]

Has bungie considered a way to reduce lag on its games?

Yes. There is some stuff we can look at in this area but some of it also comes down to the users Internet connection / routing to the other players.

'Routing to other players' says it all. No reason to say that other than if its using peer to peer rather than dedicated servers.

Just learn from your mistakes, or is it that you simply dont care about anyone whos not in the US?

I agree, I havent got xbox live yet, ive got the kit.. just I need my mum to put in the CC detials.. and shes being a butt.

Plus ive got my GCSEs.. which end on thursday, so I didnt mind waiting a few weeks, as it would just provide TOO much of a distraction for me.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

This is all about control and charging you extra. I'd be surprised if Halo2 uses the tried and true dedicated server method, even though this is the BEST way for PC gaming.

Hopefully by the time Halo2 comes out, there will be other great FPS games out as well with a "free" way to play online.

Crysis anyone? Halo2 isn't going to be the first DX10 game, Crysis will be.

Hello? Are you retarded? (Probably.)

They're talking about H2PC.

I must agree with what you said about peer to peer multiplayer, but I don't think only residents of the U.S. will become hosts.

No, your right there, but the US have it in such greater numbers that its usually a US host that happens. They had this problem with halo2 xbox, and if I remember rightly they adjusted it and had problems.

Something about the length of time it took to find a game I think.

So unless they have improved on it at the very least double, its still going to be piss poor.

Also, this is a PC, not an xbox. Can you imagine how long its going to take for orrible people to create prgrams that mod the game if they get host? Bungie can say what they like, but no way is it going to be unhackable.

Oh, and cheers Matt.

Don't worry, maybe they'll have a combination of dedicated servers and peer-to-peer matchmaking.

Hahaha, yeah hope so. But when was the last time bungie listened to anything the PC crowd asked for?

I did post ages ago, that options is the way forward, give people as many options as possible.

...and at the same time, he mentions:
For dedicated servers or listen servers? We're looking at what other games have done in the area (as well as H1) to see what makes sense to support. The dedicated server control options may be a bit more extensive since we'll want to support remote commands whereas it's not as important if you're actually sitting at your PC.

"Routing to other players" does NOT say it all. It says nothing. What he probably means by "routing" is the general route the connection takes to get from one player to the other. That could be either direct player to player, or player to server to player. No matter what it is, the connection is still being routed, and that is what is being worked on.

I hate it when you people get so hyped up over such a little thing...

I not hyped up, I simply think it will ruin multiplayer, as it did for so many UK players on the Xbox.

And if its a dedicated server, then you simply dont route to other players. Your route to the server only.

If no-one says they dont want something, bungie might do it. But if you make yourself heard, then theres a chance they take it into consideration.

And if its a dedicated server, then you simply dont route to other players. Your route to the server only.Wrong. The reason you see another player on your screen, they can move, you can shoot them, etc., is because their data is being routed through the server to your end. Not all of it, but most of it. If it was going to the server only, you would see no other players on your screen, only the server would, and that's a server so that would just have their current locations and actions.

If no-one says they dont want something, bungie might do it. But if you make yourself heard, then theres a chance they take it into consideration. That's true, especially now that we have been assured that some people are actually reading this. It's just that it really doesn't seem to be a problem here because they gave it out that there will be dedicated servers. However, if they implement Match Making into Halo 2 for the PC, that is going to get interesting (which I really hope doesn't happen). Unless Bungie/Microsoft is going to provide a few hundred servers for hosting the games, we are going to get stuck with peer-to-peer connections. THAT cannot be helped.

I know that data goes back to you from the server, any muppet knows that. my point was your data only goes to (and from) the server, not to another player. Therefore, your route to another player has no difference whatsoever if your using a dedicated server.

I disagree with your comment about the servers. Many games dont have official servers, but they have many servers going, run by clans, jolt and such (mostly for advertising), and a few others. They survive, as does other halo servers apart from Bungie ones. how about quake 3, farcry, and almost any other FPS game out there? The majority of servers they run isnt run by ID, Crytech etc.

And as for Brian's comment, Im not even going to grace that retard with a proper answer. I'll just assume it was sarcastic.

You see, the sad thing is that I can't tell if you're joking or not. That was quite retarded, as Minjita mentioned.
