Hey all,

I just discovered an oddity, and I couldn't find mention of it on the net anywhere, so I decided to bring it up here.

In Chinese mythology, the "Dragon" is an important mythical being, and one of the twelve signs of the chinese zodiac. The Dragon is traditionally said to have 117 scales. 81 yang, and 36 yin; because the dragon is partly a preserver and partly a destroyer.

(Apparently, large destruction and small preservation by the number of scales.)

As well all know, Master Chief is Spartan 117.

In Halo there is a background of the Forerunners destroying themselves. It seems they also preserved a part of themselves by means of the Ark, a small part of their old race that became the Human race.

Now the talk of 'this is the way the world ends' and the possibility of the re-activation of the Halos, and the Ark again...

To me, it seems that the number 117, in accordance with the chinese dragon myth, is supposed to suggest large destruction, and a small preservation. So, is Master Chief going to destroy all sentient life again by means of the Halos, and preserve a small portion of humanity to rebuild again afterwards?

You should of made up your own instrument. You could have named it the PolarLighting -a-phone. People would buy it and they would all be like "Awh, He's so cool for inventing the PolarLighting-a-phone."

So many connections... >_<

Y'know, there are so many instances of the number 117, I think most of them are just coincidence. Heck, in Myth (Dance on Your Grave, Body Count) the damage you get if you destroy one whole team is, believe it or not, 117.

Coincidence? Or will Balor come into Halo 3 and spread havoc?

this is a really interesting find. i doubt it's coincidence either. it would make sense if the symbolism in halo's story came from more than just christian mythology.

It is true that we do not know whether the Ark will protect, but if the Chritian mythology/symbolism holds true, then it will.

By the way, in response to a previous comment, Myth is a Bungie game is it not? So... actually it is less likely to be coincidence... destryong a whole team you say? Destruction anyone?

EDIT: Gosh, joke? I didn't really have a clue what you were talking about to be fair!

Torah scrolls?
I thought it was the Ten commandments.
At any rate, the torah is the first five books of the Bible.

But as far as the thread goes... 117 is popping up in a lot of places, places that could definately apply to the master chief.
I don't think bungie is intending that all of them apply. It's gotta be one of them though.

Good find!

I seem to remember that the torah scrolls also contain the only reference to adams mother, who wasnt strictly human, more like a thing that sould pawn humans or anything similar. I will ask my friend who sadly knows morte about this.

Any further thoughts on this one?

Well... I can't say anything more about the chinese dragon thing.

But I do know of another 117 possibility that I am confident has not been shared on any of the forums... that is, if you want to hear it.

...only in The Flood

Weird that many different religions see 7 as a somehow better number, it's even subconscious in some people, liking the number 7.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
Teach a man religion, and he will starve to death praying for a fish.

Also, don't forget about the F-117 stealth bomber. It was a top secret project for a while, just like the spartan projects. Those planes are one of the most destructive and combat efficient weapons on the planet. So is Master Chief.

I've posted it in the Watchers not too long ago.

Basically, I was looking up words in a Hebrew/Greek dictionary. All of the words in the dictionary are ordered alphabetically according to either the greek or hebrew alphabet (depending upon which section you look at). Also, each word is numbered in order it appears in the dictionary. It comes from Strong's version, which is considered the arbiter (pun intended) by Biblical scholars.

word #117 in the greek means "Athenean". Kinda dumb, since the chief is a Spartan. (Different greek city. duh.)

But the Hebrew means something else...
Hebrew
117. אַדִּיר 'addiyr, ad-deer'; wide or large; fig. powerful:- excellent, famous, gallant, glorious, goodly, lordly, mighty (-ier, one), noble, principal, worthy.

Coincidence, I'm sure.
I personally prefer the Rev. 1:17 theory.

I don't see anything in Rev 1:17.

Nothing at all. First and the last. So?

Gosh, no.

That alphabet thing is interesting. Yes, probably coincidence though.

I see it as a connection that the Chief shares in Christ's position as first and last.

If you look closely at what we've seen in the chief's life, you'll notice that he is first and last in almost everything. [scroll down a bit in this link for examples]

But that's just me.
