I've recently become interested in attempting to create my own Private Chapter. I know the basic setup, but I was wondering what draws you to the Private Chapters you're involved in. What are the important factors that get you to participate in theses groups?

For those who have founded their own group: what steps have you taken to get people involved?

The users, if it is a group full of flood randoms, no.

Some key factors when I join a new group is simple. One, check to see if the news feed is updated regularly with satisfying to satisfactory articles. Two, check to see (when actually joining) if the forum is considerably active, and with clean/good moderation. Third (and lastly), find out if the current admin(s) is/are running the private group with notable enforcement and organization. If so, try and play nice and become friends with said admin(s).

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

Also, groups are much more likely to survive if they have a purpose. General discussion groups are great, but there are a whole bunch of them out there. Find something that really interests you and find a group of people who share that interest.

People. Groups that are topic- or purpose-driven inevitably die off once the topic or purpose stops being relevant or fun for whatever reason. For good examples just look at the halo forums on this very site. Halo's no longer of any interest for those who are here, so those forums are deader than my nan. The people-driven forums in the flood and the community forum, meanwhile, are still trundling along pretty much as active as they've ever been.

So, really, you shouldn't look for ways to form a successful group. It can be done and has been done, but the best groups form spontaneously out of social groups that have already interacted with one another and want to continue to interact just because of the people they're interacting with. You can draw people in, but eventually they need to be making their own decision to stay there.

In these dark days it is always tough to start a successful group, but it can be done.

Awhile ago I had a similar question to the one that you are asking now, I hope this helps:

To Join or Not to Join...... That is the question.

I really like the people involved in them. If you were going to start a group.I think it'd be good to start it with a group of people you think are cool and not.just random people.

Community interaction all day every day, haha. But seriously, do lots of cool activities the community will enjoy. Game nights, projects, competitions and the like. They don't have to be spectacular, just good fun really. Weekly updates, special titles and other little things all add together and make what should be a high calibre group.

Good luck!

Reiterating on elmicker's post, people and relationships the best way to create successful private groups. Every private group usually consists of "cliques" of friends that gather. New people join them and old timers end up leaving. When you make a group, you're basically making a social circle.

However, forming groups just based on one game, is sure to die out. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by making a group mono-functional. In fact I was discussing this with another member here and he offered me some advice.

When you create a group or community for only one purpose "It stifles evolution".

What do I personally look for in a group? I ask myself these questions:

>Do I know anyone in the group already?
>What is the purpose of this group?
>Is the group open or private?
>Is there regular activity?
>Does the group have their own standards on what is/isn't acceptable?

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

Made one, it failed pretty bad :) so I haven't made one since...

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

The key to success is to make a group with open membership and advertise it as an "off-topic group to discuss whatever." Issue extremely harsh bans to anyone who breaks your overly restrictive rules and offer "promotions" to moderator to anybody who kisses your ass.

BOOM! Overnight success!

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

That worked for my group, got 62 members in 24 hours. Except I am not a strict admin.

"But I do not think we're invincible"

I think you need to do a few things:

First, have a clear concept of what you want from the group when you make it. The two main things you should consider are appeal and enthusiasm. Very few types of groups can have both wide appeal and fervent enthusiasm, so when creating your group, you have to evaluate the trade-off between the two.

Try to develop a certain "culture" within the group so people know what to expect when they post there. If done well, this might earn you a reputation (and hopefully a good one) in the mains.

But don't let those two things keep you group from changing for the better. Remember that your group is more about what your members want out of it than what you want. If the group tends to slowly evolve slightly away from its original intent, allow it to do so.

Keep your staff small, active, and engaged. Nothing is more unwelcoming than a group where you don't know who is in charge or every other person seems to be a mod, except you. Keep your moderating staff as small as practical, and never give Full Control to anybody but yourself.

Finally, don't rely on gimmicks too heavily. While things like contests, game nights, and complex ranking systems are fun, they are not enough to keep a group alive and growing. Your group should revolve around the discussion that happens in it, not the gimmicks.

Just some advice that has helped my group become fairly successful. Good luck.

This is a tried and tested formula.

On-Topic: I'm not active in many groups, but I think it's more about the people, and if you have common interests.

Create a gaggle of alts and post meaningful conversations as a honeypot to draw in prospective members. Always have at least one running issue full of drama. Finally there needs to be an inner clique.
