Subject: Why is this censored?

It's actually pretty easy to just behave like a normal human being on this site and fall perfectly within the range of what is acceptable. As someone who used to get his ass handed to him on a near monthly basis, I found that caring less about "making my points heard" and generally just being a jerk lead to a much more peaceful existence on this site. There is no reason whatsoever you must use any of the filtered words on this site in order to participate in any of these discussions.

Unless Urk posts. Sometimes you just can't help it.

Here's an idea. If you have any doubt that what you are about to post could result in a ban, don't post it. Trust me. I've walked that line several times in my own ignorance.

Your support for keeping the rules broad is why I'm frightened to post on the mains sometimes.

We've tried specific rules before. They don't work. They aren't broad because we're haters of fun. They're broad because people who have problems with authority (pretty much everyone on the Internet) like to look for loopholes in rules. That's why the rules basically say that Bungie and its representatives are always right.
Then take the time to make sure there are no loopholes. Nothing wrong with a few hundred pages of paragraphs.

But no one will bother to find them, because there are a few hundred pages and no one wants to read that.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Yeah, people totally read the rules now, even though they aggregate to two paragraphs. Everyone will totally read all the nuanced attempts to close loopholes (which won;t ever happen anyway). The US Tax code and its 60 some thousand pages of attempts to close loopholes is a great model to base everything rule oriented on. Genius!

OT: I hope the filter goes away when the next update drops. I don't think we need it any longer.

But evilcam, as I'm sure you know, children visit these forums regularly, and the site is meant to be family friendly. We surely can't expose these children to something as crass as profanity!

I'll admit, I decided to take the silly route with my posts in this thread. But I agree with the filter removal. I feel as if that the filter exists for a very specific reason; to fulfill perfunctory, meaningless, ill-reasoned bureaucratic process, thereby exuding the illusion of order over chaos.

Oh I apologize. I guess that's not ok either.

This is a rather broad rule because not everybody idea of what is and what isn't safe for work is the same, and it depends on peoples' idea of a workplace.
If you have to put conditions on your own experiences (e.g., "talking about orientation was fine at work as long as it was around co-workers only and we were respectful"), that most likely means that it ISN'T safe for work. You wouldn't talk about these subjects around customers, and in some cases, not even around your boss. Being able to discuss a particular topic amongst your friends at work in quiet, hushed, and "respectful" tones does not make that topic "safe for work."

Regardless, the rules are intentionally broad. As we say frequently, stay out of the gray areas and you will be fine. There are numerous places that are not the public forums -- including private groups right here on Bungie.net as well as other websites -- that you can discuss these topics. There is no need to push the limits here, and if you want to post in the gray areas anyway, you should expect to occasionally be told that you went too far.

This(especially underlined portion). Pretty much OP BUNGiE wants keep everything as PG13 as it possibly can so as to maintain the illusion of a family friendly site for Mrated games.

Many people on here are in fact mature teenagers( no offense to those of us who are crusty old guys) but more often that not you will see one to a group of users who rain on everyone else's parade just because they couldn't keep their comments to themselves.

Rules are in place to maintain a semblance of order here on B.net and to provide delicate harmoney. I for one have no problem with others even if they believe differently or act differently than I do, but I am one person out of a giant cluster bomb of people on here and not everyone will share my elasticity of acceptance.

Just know that if you want to discuss topics which could raise flames of war from other users then just make a private group(extremely easy) and invite people from the classifields to discuss in your group/clubhouse. Just because you can't discuss a topic here doesn't mean that you can't discuss it.

Is it possible form a group and talk about it without being censored? I'm just curious.

The way that foman spoke of the groups suggested as such, make a test group with a couple friends and find out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

But when on the regular forums, remember Super Intendant "Keep it Clean!"

This has been discussed before. The profanity filter is from an MSN/Xbox Live list, and has not been edited in multiple years (pre-Halo 3).

Don't read into anything about the selection of words on the list. You'd be wrong.

That's a typical Microsoft thing to do so bungie can't be blamed I guess
...? What? Microsoft didn't mandate that they use this list, Bungie just did.

And if the profanity filter is getting in your way of discussing people's preference due to how they were born because you talk about it to the point where you're annoyed, then you should probably not be on here discussing said preferences and should instead take your discussions to a forum made specifically for the discussion of aforementioned preferences.

Hetero-blam!- is also -blam!-ed. So is just se-xu-al and po-rn.

Guess its pretty clear these forums aren't for those topics.

Don't be ludicrous; Bungie is not homophobic, and to even imply it shows a massive failure to understand why these rules exist. Perhaps instead of ranting against Bungie's "discrimination," this should be a hint to you that these forums might not be appropriate for threads about sex or orientation generally -- regardless of what kind of sex or orientation you're talking about.

This is a video game developer's business website, not a place for unrestricted discussion on any subject. As I'm sure you know, children visit these forums regularly, and the site is meant to be family friendly. Threads about ANY kind of sex or ANY kind of orientation are regularly locked in the Flood Forum and the others as well. It has nothing to do with orientation.

There's nothing wrong with being any kind of particular orientation, obviously. But there is almost never a legitimate reason to discuss it here.

The "business" part of the site and the discussion forums are very much seperate.

Sex and orientation can be discussed in a mature way (much like a family might discuss it), and if it is, then why not let it remain open? I've seen it done many times before, it's not like maturity doesn't exist here.

You're right that this discussion shouldn't be "unrestricted", but given that Bungie has always made Mature rated games and since the Terms of Use say that users should be over 13, it should be apparent that at least an amount of maturity should be allowed.

Maybe were past the point of the filter, maybe we aren't. That shouldn't be anything we decide as a fanbase. I'm sure most parents could care less what goes on when their children are on the internet but there are those who genuinely do. This is a gaming forum/community. Why we need to use these words and how we as a community can't express our thoughts through other means is silly. I find the majority of the people who advocate to change it have no valid reasoning behind their claims. Let Bungie do what Bungie is going to do and move on with the rest.

I'm gonna let everyone in on a little secret.

flawless profanity filtration is impossible. shhhhhh

Although here's one thing I've always wondered:

WHY THE HELL DO WE EVEN HAVE A PROFANITY FILTER?! This site isn't for kids, and the kids that go on it (or -- and especially -- their parents) can't possibly complain that they saw words that they think are naughty on an 17+ site. WHY DOES IT EXIST GODAMMIT

Probably because the site is 13+ and not 17+.
