Yeah it's 13. Also check CoC and ToU; they got really pretty. Anyways I figure that it's up to the parent to decide what sites they go on so creating a global profanity filter is silly IMO.

That's all well and good but this could also just be a moral, ethical, or "official" (as far as the image of the company looks) decision by Bungie.

They could just want their site and its forums therein to be clean, and could also think that uncensoring profanity is counterproductive to that goal. That's all speculation, obviously, but I'm just trying to prove a point. The existence of the profanity filter doesn't necessarily have to be the cause of some "Won't somebody think of the children?!" approach or mindset.

Oh yeah I get that and totally agree with that mentality but I wouldn't do it myself because it seems childish and obtrusive at times.

And the good people of Bungie could think that, too.

But the way you feel about something personally or in a way that aligns with your preferences, beliefs, etc. etc. needs to be sidelined for whatever will benefit the greater good (or company as a whole).

And I'm perfectly aware of the fact that I am, in essence, defending beliefs that I don't know anyone over there has and presenting and expanding upon hypotheses created from other hypotheses, but that's only because.... y'know.... like.... um..... yeah.

You have to be 13 years of age on virtually any site that collects information due to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998.

Not sure if you're referring to my conversation, if not ignore this response. That's fine that they're pretty much mandated to have that restriction, but if the site was meant to be mature-only and have uncensored profanity on it, they could've just as easily raised that number to 17+ or 18+.

Regardless of one's view on mature content on the website, there is a strong legal reason that the 13+ age requirement exists in the privacy statement of this site.
ESRB, being just a board from the Entertainment Software Association, is not backed by any government legislature, and most ratings are not enforced except in select states and local legislatures.

I remember having a long discussion about this a few months ago on the forums. The truth is that list is outdated and it's a hassle to update just like that. I'd expect the new forums to have a more coherent list.

Also we are talking about a list compiled by some bored Microsoft employ that didn't care much, took any word that could be used as an offense, put into the list and sent it over Bungie and whoever needed that at the time.

That's fine, but not what I'm talking about.

I'm saying that if Bungie wanted this site to be a "mature" site for "big kids only", they could've raised that age in the CoC or ToU or wherever it is to 18+ or 17+ or whatever number they think constitutes old enough to be on an uncensored forum. The fact is they kept that number at the bare minimum required for them to abide by the law you mentioned, and therefore didn't want this site to be "big kids only"*.

*I'm using this hyperbolically silly phrase to refer to an adults-only or 16+ or 17+ website only because having to refer back to all the possible age restrictions they could put on an uncensored forum over and over again would be tedious. I know it sounds stupid.

I'm pretty sure there's an Achronos post which explicitly states they were handed a list of banned words by MSN when they were tinkering with the forums.

Considering some of the arguments with the web team I've seen here over rule and code wordings, things such as "what defines obscenity" and the role of the CoC/ToU were likely not taken into account.

Age and maturity aren't likely even relevant to there being a word filter. The Mature ESRB rating at the bottom is for game content and does not deal with the forums, just as the 13+ age mandate in the privacy statement is a legal move. Neither really had anything to do with the censor.

I agreed with OP until I read this;

This has been discussed before. The profanity filter is from an MSN/Xbox Live list, and has not been edited in multiple years (pre-Halo 3).

Don't read into anything about the selection of words on the list. You'd be wrong.

That's a typical Microsoft thing to do so bungie can't be blamed I guess

This does bring up the question as to why we still use the old list, though.
