Humans were not allies to the forerunners, we, as reclaimers are the forerunners. We just don't know that.
The covenant refer to them as the forerunners simply because of arrogance, the prophets believe they are their ancestors because humans are too "inferior", they knew of the Icons, which they refer to as the crystals (in the books) and the humans were oblivous.
It is no coincidence that an Icon was found on Reach and that the Ark is on earth.
I for one think there is more significance behind what happened at Reach then what was led on. We never did find out what happened to Reach, other then it was being attacked by the covenant. In the books it was never completely glassed because the location of the crystal was there. I for one would like to see some back story on Reach in Halo 3, somewhat of a dream or such that the chief has, to clue us in on what happened there. It's obviousy the covenant found it, but they landed troops on it as well, which was unusual, so it is clear their is importance behind Reach.
