We know that rampancy exists in the Halo universe (what with the situation with Cortana). However, is there any possibility that this could apply to 343 Guilty Spark in his 100,000 years of isolation on Alpha Halo? There are a few odd holes in the current story that we know.

1. Halo is supposed to wipe out all sentient life and force the Flood to starve to death. If this is true, what have the Flood eaten to sustain themselves in their 100,000 years in containment since the last firing? Each other? Their survival is unexplained.

2. The only explanation we have of Halo's inner workings are from 343 Guilty Spark/Gravemind/Cortana. Seeing as how the former two are technically enemies in the games that they are introduced in, does Cortana follow this pattern? Could they be rampant/lying?

But...

3. Given the fact that Cortana absorbed raw data about the superweapon in Alpha Halo's computer, is this theory moot, or is the data flawed?

Feel free to discuss.

If I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good nite.

It's a good thought. I never really thought of 343 being rampant, but now that you mention it. All he does is float and spit out non-sense about how what a genius he is. The flood though should be dead. I agree, what's with their survival if they've been couped up for 100,000 years.

Perhaps Cortana and Guilty know a little more than they are letting on about Halo.

The Flood's survival is explained....Guilty Spark said, The were kept alive for study, and then he says he regrets that decision.

They didn't eat anything. The little potatoe guys (yeah yeah 'Infection Forms', whatever) sort of hibernated (sp?) for the whole time, and then when the covies came to the ring, they woke the potatoes up. The potatoes then 'ate' the covies and thats how the flood started back up.

Kept alive for study. The only other entity on the ring world is Guilty. So he wanted to study them? He seems to be making alot of his own decisions. For his own purposes...

Study by the Monitors? Even if they were kept alive, there would be no biomass around to sustain them.

Edit: Winchester, if you are going to try to start a flame war, leave.

Due to recent cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

the flood don't actually starve. 'starved' means they have no more bodys to host so the sentinals can kill them without them speading.

Not entirely true. Remember what Cortana said?

"Halo does not kill Flood. It kills their food. Human, Covenant, we are all equally edible..."

I have always thought that Spark was ONE of the many enemies that the humans face.

I am...whimsical today.

Does GS have enough 'space' to become Rampant? Is he self contained, or can he run through the whole Halo system as he desires.
I think that he is mostly self contained, as he seems appalled at the sight of:
'A Construct, In the Core? That is completely unacceptable!'

Maybe he had become crazy (well of course he has) I the normal sense I mean, like a Human does?

Here is a little bit of text that i happened to find from Halo CE.

The installation was specifically built to study and contain the
Flood. Their survival as a race was dependant upon it. I am grateful to see
that some of them survived to reproduce.

Interesting.

Well, let's see.

He went from the jungles of the Flood containment chanbers all the way to the control room and Basis facility on his own.

*sigh* Ok, Guilty Spark is talking about the Forerunner, not the Flood in that statement, And as such the Forerunners survival as a race was dependant on the containment of the Flood.

I know that he is talking about the forries. But there is more to it than just the containment portion.

It is extremely odd that the Flood would be shoved back into containment, when no one was around, to be studied.

Who could have done that? I am almost certain that whatever was left of the Flood would have been in their suicidal rampage like they always seem to be.

I'm pretty sure that Halo has nothing to do with the books, and AI rampancy is an invention of their author.

Also, who says that Cortana has gone haywire? She's probably just got a hard dose of what's to come after seeing Gravemind face-to-face.
