Straight from the wandering mind of Watson 203
First and foremost I laugh at the people who say Spartan and possibly haven't considered the process of becoming one and what it takes.
You should specify what type of Spartan, i.e. Spartan I (ORION Project), II or III.
I's or members of the ORION Project where merely tests for the augmentations, they became above average soldiers, but not to the level of Spartan II's or III's. Children of Spartan I's (Spartan 1.1's) obtained notable improvements compared to normal children however not to the same extent as their Spartan I parents.
II's were by far the strongest, fastest and supplied with the best ordnance. They had many years of training and powerful augementations to further bolster their skills. However, the augmentation procedure was very high risk. Lots of Spartan II's washed out during the medical procedure, either dying or suffering deformities, illnesses and disorders. To be chosen for the program individuals had to have specific genetic markers which weren't common in the general human population. You were then kidnapped as a child and left your entire life behind.
Spartan III's were a compromise of the capability of a Spartan II and cost. They were given SPI armour, which was no where near as powerful as the MJOLNIR counterpart, but gave them a stealth bonus of being partially camouflaged. They were also trained for a large part of their young lives, however they weren't trained to the same extent as Spartan II's were. Finally their augmentation procedure had 100% success rate, but the augmentations weren't as strong as those the Spartan II's underwent. They were sent on missions they weren't expected to return from. If all the members of a company died it was still considered a win. There are minimal amount of survivors of the Spartan III program considering how many Spartan III's there were.
All the augmentation procedures were very painful to the subjects. In the case of the II's you had to have specific genetic markers to be chosen for the program, whereas the III's where children who had lost their parents and/or their homeworlds and had little to nothing left. Subsequently some Spartan II's weren't as controlled as all the Spartan II's were, but their training program ironed out most of the creases.
Considering all the above, I'd rather be an ODST than a Spartan.
Positives'
-A simple training program as an adult rather than being kidnapped as a child trained and augmented,
-Still capable of having a family and children (A normal life),
-Not just a man/woman behind a mask,
-Avoids painful augmentation progress which may cause injury or death
-The best of the best (Apart from Spartans)
-SOEIV's
Negative's
-Not as strong, quick or as capable as Spartans
-Unable to wear MJOLNIR Armour (Spartan II's & possibly III's)
-Most rigourous non-Spartan training program
-More likely to die in battle or from injury
