The point of a forum is to illicit the usage of profound, and intellectual conversations, that of which can't be done with a limited vocabulary. The limitation of vulgar words makes users work to come up with better arguments than "-blam!- you!"

Though it really doesn't. If users want to neglect intelligent conversation and resort to cursing another individual, they still can. Just because the word is filtered, doesn't mean that we can't easily guess what they meant. Users who don't wish to resort to immature verbal abuse won't and would not be effected by the allowance of profanity.

No? Profanity shouldn't be a point of concern for anyone. It's fine as it is.

From up here the city lights burn like a thousand miles of fire

even if everyone votes yes, they wont allow profanity here. this site is family friendly and safe for work

While that is a valid point, I do believe that I would prefer NOT reading some of the horrible things that could be posted. Trust me, reading -blam!- is a lot less appeasing than the real curse word.

Also, Bungie likes to keep things classy, like your mother.

Canadian Nazism is a polite ideology, ok?
"Into the boxcar now... there you go. Oh, watch your head. Here, let me help you... Yep, showers are right through there. No problem at all."

It wouldn't even be that much of an issue if the profanity filter only filtered, you know, profanity. Which it doesn't.

I apologize, I meant to mention that a opt in/out option might be welcome. That way, if someone wants to use profanity, they can, while others who wish to not see it, don't have to.

I could see the logic behind an option for the filter, but I doubt we will ever see one, as there is no point to implement one.

Well, whether there is or isn't a point is more of an opinion. Just as you could say there is no point for there being a filter because we usually know what they are saying anyway, you could also say there is no point in not having a filter because people can simply ignore hateful words, as they do with the 'blams'. Of course, this is where the opt in/out feature would be handy for those that think differently. Also, do remember that not all words on the profanity filter are necessarily curses or impolite words. I've already gone into this before and that turned into a big fiasco, so I will simply say; some words are blocked by the filter that happen to be the correct and appropriate term for the orientation of many people around the world. A group of people, who and what they are. Sure, this word may be used in an inappropriate manner by some, but that doesn't mean a word that is only used inappropriately as a slang, and not by proper definition, should be banned.

They have a filter because people have proven themselves to be immature. Not on here, but as a whole, around the internet. The opt in feature is about as close to a good idea as you can get, but it's still not going to be implemented because it's not necessary for them as a company to do it. It may be something others want, but we don't always get what we want when it comes to forum features. There really is no scenario where you need to swear. We all do it of course, but it isn't necessary, things get lost in translation over text enough as it is.

I can understand with terms that are anything but swear words, but people have turned them into something derogatory which can fuel arguments. It would be more stress than it's worth. Some of those who turn off the filter will still get caught up in the flames and insults. Swear words are worse eyesores than -blam!-. At least when they try to swear when they cant, I get to scroll down and laugh at them for trying to swear when they know they can't.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

There is no reason for it. Profane words denote nothing more than a limited vocabulary.

Either that or have a better censor.

That rule is not universal, and if that is what you truly believe, then that indicates a lack of understanding and the presence of bias, in my opinion. Profanity is simply the result of intense negative passion, which can cloud one's cognitive functions temporarily, not a limited vocabulary, in some cases.

I ♥ Bungie!

Absolutely not.

  • 07.07.2012 10:13 PM PDT

Bungie wants a certain atmosphere with the forums, and having 12 year olds swearing is not conducive to that atmosphere. What they say anywhere else doesn't matter, but kids can't swear here. An option to turn it off to your eyes would be nice though.

Trolls = the most ignorant souls on the internet.

It's a public forum, so kids see this.. they should not have to see swearing on here. Hence the blam! filter.

I know it's hard for some people to believe, but there are people who are offended by things like this. Despite the fact that Bungie focuses on rated M content this isn't a site for adults (anyone who has been to the Flood should know how many teenagers come on here). In the past, Bungie was a little more loose with what content could be on here. I remember back in one of their updates they showed complaints from people who were offended by what people, and Bungie employees, were allowed to say. They apologized to those people, and they said they would change.

I think this is a good example of what a lot of people think:
Posted by: Baph117
It isn't profane. Same with -blam-, -blam-, -blam-, -blam-, etc. These aren't profane words, and they aren't even subjects that we are banned from discussing, so why can't we use the words? It's a pointless inconvenience.

People are offended by words like that. (Yes I know I censored what he said, but quoting those words is a bit ironic and hurtful to my argument) I know you see them every where on places that don't regulate, but people are still offended by these words. I know some may not care if other people care, but thankfully Bungie does.
Also you can't make threads and/or discussing them usually results in either a warning or a ban of some kind.

Why is -blam- a filtered word?

Because this isn't a site for adults. Underage children do come on here, and discussing such things with them is unlawful in some countries, states, providences, etc.

This site is [i]oriented
towards adults, as the people who own the site focus on developing mature rated games. However, all are welcome.

I also believe your above statement is false. You'll of course have to be more precise about what things you think it is illegal to discuss. It's my understanding that profanity is not illegal on the internet, anywhere. Topics of an adult nature, such as coitus, are not off limits either, so long as the company or corporation that owns the medium being used to discuss such topics on the internet between two individuals residing in two seperate places, does not have local laws against such a thing, then it is not illegal.
