...then does that mean it will be entirely online?

I'm afraid that Bungie is going to really -blam!- this up.

Yeah ive een thinking that if they go into the MMO genre that they wont be able to compete. Look at Bioware as a example they did great but not as well as some had hoped.

Why everyone always complain about having to be constantly online to play a game when themselves are 24/7 online browsing websites, that's beyond me. There have been MMOs since two decades, even before DSL -- and people still played fine.

Because people sometimes just want to play by themselves, without having to deal with other people (and missions based around other people).

MMO's have failed in the eyes of MANY gamers. The question is simple, however: How MMO-like is this going to be?

Oh, and another thing is simple: If you don't have online, you can't play the game.

The option of playing offline is nice, especially since having internet access 100% of the time is not possible.

Come on that's all? Look out there at the MMO market, there are some great MMOs with a huge playerbase like EVE Online.

I'll buy whatever Bungie puts out as long as it isn't pay to play.

  • 07.07.2012 9:08 PM PDT

Where's this MMO theory coming from? The factions remind me more of an RPG.

  • 07.07.2012 9:08 PM PDT

They just said it was going to MMO mechanics. Yeah I'd buy anything from bungie also.

People really need to get through their heads that MMO does not mean MMORPG. It does not mean WoW or EVE or even the level of online Diablo 3 has. MMO literally only means, lots of people playing online. Halo Reach is an MMO technically.

Action role-playing game != MMO. Don't confuse the two. There are some basic characteristics that make a MMO gain its title, Diablo isn't a MMO, it's just an Action game that has been attached to an online game service - Battle.net and focuses on quick matchmaking groups.

MMO simply means a game able to support thousands of people playing online at the same time. Diablo 3 does that. I really don't see how that makes it not an MMO.

With your logic - Halo is a MMOFPS?

Key

It's on consoles, so I doubt it will be a server-based MMO (entirely and always online).

The Matchmaking of it is. If it was just the matchmaking, it would be an MMOFPS.

Yes it is. While I hold onto hope that the new game is an MMO with a persistent world where you log in and off and it keeps going without you (Like the games most people think of) It merely states in the contract that it will have "persistent elements" which could mean so many different things.

I'm simply sticking to the definition of the term MMO which I'm sure the lawyers who came up with it were doing when they wrote it.

Then again, Reach's offline credit cap wasn't technically online only....

I don't see your point. Sorry.

READ IT.

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

From what was leaked in that contract... the release dates of the games... no... It's not an MMO... It's probably an open world game that has large scale multiplayer. Like 16 people can play at one time.

  • 07.07.2012 9:39 PM PDT

They also said something about a PC port in the future so could that be the MMO that the legal document was talking about?

Well, even if it's not server based they sorta have to stop modders. Reach effectively already had an "always online" system, if not technically.

Well yeah but I think the term "MMO" invokes the idea of being in the same world as everybody else in realtime at all times.

Could it be possible that Bungie's new game will transcend the classic MMO image that we have come to know? It might be an entirely new genre of video games that only Bungie is creative enough to imagine.
