Actual Title:
-blam!- barriers; smash 'em all down!
"What? Another Destiny thread? It's probably just about factions. I'm out."

Now, I made a thread about this a while ago, but I had some new ideas to add to it.

Do you think, once Destiny goes multiplatform (I think it's with the first sequel; feel free to correct me), what would you think about cross-platform online play? This could be as simple as just being able to play in a regular matchmaking-type game on your Xbox with people also on a Playstation and PC. It could be as complex as having people on different consoles being in different areas in an open world, but able to interact with other console users in other areas (for example, in an MMO, they would start on different continents but be able to go to each others').

I think this could really break down the barrier between a community that will surely, at least partially, be separated by playing a game on different consoles and also coming from two (or three) totally different communities. I've never been in the PS3 community or any forums relating thereof, and so have no idea how things go on with Sony fanboys and their manner in which they discuss games. Even if they were the same it becomes a Cheaper by the Dozen situation where two similar groups are forced to coexist in a forced manner, and due to never having met each other before, natural rifts are formed.

Sure, the controls and graphics would be different, but other than that the general discussion could be entirely the same. People wouldn't have to just find Xbox players to play with, they could find anybody. This would probably require an in-game friends list because of the complications of different gamertag/PSNUsernameThingy/PCUsernameThingy hosting systems, but Bungie's done that before. Sure, it cost a lot but they've got a pretty wealthy financial backer and if the game sells well, in the server department, money could unbecome an object.

So, what are your thoughts? Despite my convictions against it, I'll add a poll up top so we can get a solid consensus on the opinion of the community. (The ones who bother reading this and aren't turned away by the fact that it's another thread by me.)

edit: -blam!-, I can't change the subject? -blam!-.

I don't know how this would go over, although I doubt it would happen, and if it did, then it would take a long time to make.

It would be cool since this would make the game have many more players at one time though.

Bye.

I don't think cross-console matchmaking is allowed.
Why market yourself as the superior online service and then play with the competition?

Although, it would be pretty cool to have an absolutely MASSIVE number of players online. At least I'll get a match quicker.

I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.

I think it could be cool.

By who? The video game police? If they hosted a service from the PC version and then allowed both PS3 and Xbox to connect to that, I don't see the problem.

It's like inviting two people who you know should date to someone else's house. They won't know what hit 'em.

  • 07.08.2012 4:51 PM PDT

Not a bad idea, but I don't really think it would be possible.

  • 07.08.2012 4:51 PM PDT

Id like it, and, don't quote me on this, I think that the console makers wouldn't be able to stop Bungie, given Bungie owns the servers and such

My name is Alt, but you can call me Sven.

I have no knowledge of the video game development process, so I don't know if such a feature could ever exist. However, If it could, I would back it completely. From what I can deduce, bringing players from different consoles together can only strengthen the community.

Also, cross platform play has been done before. IE: Shadowrun, DC Universe, etc

I know it's not any easy feat. I just don't have the technical knowledge to be able to discuss it in any way that doesn't oversimplify it to the point of absurdity.

If you have any light to shine on the subject, you're welcome to.

Yes. The video game police....

I probably should have stated that it's not possible legitimately.

Why would you play on Xbox live for a price when you can play on the ps3, which would connect you to the Xbox live players anyway, for free? I don't think Microsoft wouldn't allow it since everyone would switch to the free option for the same experience.

I was kidding. But seriously, who would stop them?

Also, to your "We're the best console ever!"-point, they can still give certain perks to each system. You get this extra map, and this gun, you get this other map, and THIS gun, etc.

They don't have to be the same as long as they can coexist.

Xbox's sales are already better than the PS3 and it has far fewer exclusive titles.

Clearly something like this isn't going to harm it's sales drastically enough to forbid it outright.

I would be all for it, but it doesn't seem like something that is actually possible.

Well first of all, it was "easy" to do on Shadowrun for the simple fact that it was a Microsoft published game on Microsoft's console which was able to play on with people on Microsoft's OS on the PC. The problem is that, too my knowledge at least, PSN and Xbox are not very compatible, if at all. Not only that but if the details in such a partnership to cross-platform could be worked out, it would have already on games such as Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Sony and Microsoft don't play well with one another. In addition, isn't the basic PSN still free? That would create favoritism with people buying the Playstation version over the Xbox version.

The video game police....or lawyers. You would have violated the ToU and modified your console. You're probably thinking "Why go to all that trouble?". Well, if the modification took off, no one would pay for their online subscription and that would make Microsoft (and other companies) a sad panda.

If destiny did indeed do this, what do effect do you think this would have? Every developer would be pushing for cross-console play. If the idea took off and it became an online standard you would have a whole heap of players paying to play for this online service while another heap of players are playing for free on the same service. It would just be silly unless all online services were free to play.

Would you really have to modify the console to link it to a PC-hosted server?

Like I said before, games like Call of Duty already come out multiplatform, and yet sell better (to my knowledge) on the Xbox. So the yearly, monthly, or occasional fee that people pay to use Live is clearly not as big a factor as one might think.

Then why was Shadowrun so "easy" to connect to the PC? Was the Xbox modified to do so?

If im your science teacher, don't bug me.

Sounds amazing but why stop there.

What I am salivating for is a forge that can go form PC to Xbox360 ect, because console controlers just seem illsuited for forging and map editing.

Don't rule it out either

Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because Bungie kicks ass.

Eh. PC players would probably dominate console players, simply because of the accuracy of a keyboard/mouse versus a console controller. Assuming Destiny is any form of a shooter, this would be pretty problematic.

It's not like you can exclude PC players, though. You'd be contradicting the very idea on which cross platform play is built upon. Also, PS3 and Xbox players would never get along anyway, IMO.

It would be great OP, but the differences of console and PC are too outstanding. Pitting same-platform players against each other like it is now is the most logical thing to do.

It was under the Microsoft "Live" umbrella. Windows live players could play with Xbox Live players. I can't comment on whether it worked very well or not as I haven't played it, but no games have really tried it since.

This. I was reading an article a while back about cross-platform gaming (I believe it was in OXM) that came to the conclusion that PC players will beat Xbox players a majority of the time. They said that Microsoft did a study a while back testing PC players against Xbox players for GoW, and then decided it would be nearly impossible to pit the groups against each other.

If they decided to put it in Destiny, they should have an option for players to chose if they would like to play against other platforms as well as their own. I'm not sure if there would be a huge skill difference between Xbox and PS3 players, but there should be measures in place to account for the difference.

All in all, I would love for it to happen, but I don't think it will. It would cause a ton of problems for Xbox LIVE, as PS3 and PC online is free, and Microsoft would think it would devalue LIVE.
