Subject: Avatar System

As we all know, being nice and following the rules gets you a cool looking title bar with a cool title. Well how about along with that, with each jump up the title ladder, you get access to a cool avatar or avatars to select from?

This would not change the current avatar selection that everyone can chose from. No matter what your title is, you will always be able to select the avatar of your choice in the current avatar selection.

So with each jump up, per say, you would get five "select" avatars to choose from. As you are here longer and your title moves from "Honorable Member" to "Noble Member" you then have ten avatars to chose from, rather than five. So when you get to "Exalted Mythic Member", you have access to all the "select" avatars.

If you get a warning or a ban, your avatar gets set to the default avatar and you can only select from your current so called title. So if you drop from Noble Member to Honorable Member, you go from being able to select from ten "select" avatars to five "select" avatars.

Again, you can always choose from the current avatar selection if you so choose, or you choose a "select" avatar according to your title.

Yes, some will say, "Well that will just make flame wars." Not really. I don't see any flame wars about titles currently. I think it would provide an extra encentive to play nice and would just generally be fun.

Bungie still remains in control of the avatar system. No, I am not suggesting that we can make our own avatars like Moderators can. I also am aware that titles mean nothing. Again, just some fun and incentive.

So, what do you all think?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I really don't see what is wrong with letting longtime users have their own avatar.

Titles will mean something!

I like it!

We should know better, because we are better.

I would be fine with that. I see no reason why it would produce flame wars. It is just showing that we play nice and follow the rules.

Spread the love...

I had this idea/thread a couple months ago. And I think it's a great idea.

Maybe you or I could handle making our own avatar and have it be rated "PG" or "G", safe for work type thing, but others would abuse it. That's why I said "bungie still remains in control of the avatar system."

This is a good idea, the only bad thing that I can see with this, is kids crying because they can't have certain avatars or complain when they go down a title.

I've been wanting this for a while now. Title exclusive avatars would be a nice touch to the site, I think.

Maybe more than 1 per title that way everyone who's the same title doesn't all just have 1 avatar.

I would like to see this, but with more than just a couple of pics per "level". Excellent idea though.

Exalted Unexplainable Member

Where one person sees members rightfully earn more avatars with seniority, another sees other members limited to a lesser selection of avatars for no good reason. Isn't it sort of the same thing, just using a different selection of words and connotation? Either way, why would you want to do this?

That would be expected. Complainers. All the more reason to "play nice".

Now how the coding load would be on the web team to do this, I don't know. I'm sure they have a lot they are working on that we don't know about. Do they have time to implement this?

Yeah, I just shot out five, ten, and so on. It could be ten, then twenty, then thirty maybe.

As I said I like the idea, however I think it would be nice if you kept the avatars once you unlocked them. This way, people's avatars wouldn't have to be switched around all the time if they're fluctuating between titles.

True, your so called "deranking", for lack of a better term, would instill a bit of humility when you post with a lower title and have a higher avatar. Keeping it simple is usually best. More code means more potential problems.

I think the New Hawtness will use a different system. I like the idea Achronos posted a while back, which could work for unlocking avatars and/or titles by completing achievements in Destiny.

x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I don't see anything wrong with a couple extra avatars for people who have been here for awhile and follow the rules. It would get annoying when you change title and fluctuates for a couple months though...

#1 Legendary ODST Firefight Highscore

[UNINTELLIGIBLE > INSUBORDINATION(?)]

I don't think this new system would affect many people, because a lot of members use emblems, models, or trophies as their avatar rather than the default ones.

I'm interested in hearing Achronos' opinion on whether gamification would work well here.

@Geegs30

I'm all for giving people more stuff for playing nice and following the rules, but I don't think that people should have anything past the normal privileges (posting) taken away when they get banned.

  • 07.08.2012 10:07 PM PDT

People get enough for behaving, the idea just limits newer members which sucks.
