Subject: Reach vs Cod --Age Appropriatness

Old School Gamer and Proud Member of the Seventh Column

Lately I've been playing cod. it took me awhile to get into it but slowly I am seeing some of it's merits. However, one aspect of the game troubles me and makes me grateful that Bungie didn't also utilize inappropriate commendations in Reach.

While cod is an M rated game, kids play it. Alot. Having a pot leaf for an emblem or "wargasm" for a tag is completely inappropriate. Call me a prude but It is disconcerting that the game developer didn't take their ethical responsibilities a little more seriously when they put out this game.

In Reach there is very little a parent would be concerned about their kids seeing.

What do you think? Should the game developer understand kids will be playing their games and produce age appropriate content? Or is it anything goes?

Blame the crappy parents not the developer. Most parents nowadays don't give a -blam!- about their kids.

You really don't think they have is any more responsibility beyond sticking an "M" on the packaging?

Bungie has an incredible track record of making great games while not shooting for the lowest common demoninator. It can be done.

I wanna be the very best..

Of the two Halo has less violence directly associated with a relevant scenario to the world today. Its storyline can be more easily disassociated from reality while Call of Duty depicts killing of other humans along with a story line that can be difficult for kids to handle emotionally considering MW3's story is based on real world events. The M (17+) rating is in place for a reason.

While we all agree that cod is an M rated game for a reason, my query is this . . . Does ithe M on the package mean the publisher can put anything in their game?? Even though an incredibly huge number of players will be children under 18.

Bungie has demonstrated that you can make good games without putting in "wargasm" or pot leaves in the game.

And the parent argument is a red herring. It doesn't negate that the publisher has a moral responsibility to not put junk in their game . . . A game that will be played by many grade school kids.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

Neither is anything particularly bad.

I win, you lose, get over it!

Wrong. CoD doesn't have teams of Female Spartans Running around Panting. Everyone knows that's why people use the Female Spartan Model.

I'm new to competitive Halo and Halo itself (Reach being my first video game ever actually). Message me if you want to play;

Reach: MLG, Arena, Doubles, BTB and customs.
Halo 3: Ranked MM and customs.

Also I have every Halo title and all of its DLC on the Xbox 360.

Take out the very little (campaign) swearing and the small amount of blood, and Halo should be a T rated game.

I don't actually know the rating requirements though.

Why Bungie, why would you do this?! - Halo Community

Its completely the parents responsibility for what their kids see. All a publisher has to do is strap a M+ to the package.

And to be honest, Halo (1-Reach) itself could have been rated T. There's, what, blood and the rare curse word. I really have seen worse from T games. However, I believe Bungie made it M+ so the community would have to deal with less kiddies (well, the ones with responsible parents) and that kind of shows responsibility. They might have even attracted more business if it was rated T, but its obvious they chose to do what their established community wanted.

I don't believe it is the game developer who rates it, but the publisher gets it rated.

I'm suprised the pot leaf and wargasm are the two items being criticized for CoD, what about the level where you play as Russians murdering innocent civilians? That would concern me more if I was a parent. But I'm not a parent-thank god, and both games are great for multiple reasons.

There's a reason it's rated M... If you don't want your little kid seeing this type of stuff you shouldn't let them play a M rated game..

It's the same as a R rated movie.. Kids watch them but that doesn't stop the producers from making the same movie.

When the game is over, the king and pawn go into the same box

In a game based on killing each other, are the emblems and titles really an issue?

Also, does it really matter? About 80% are not gonna even understand what "wargasm" means, anyway.

That is not what I am debating. I am proposing that it shouldn't be in the game in the first place. And so do you when you state that since 80% wouldn't understand "wargasm" then it is okay to have it in the game.

I do agree with you i guess, Halo should be rated T in my opinion. HOWEVER, if it were, the number of little kids would multiply so fast it would be unbelieveable. All online games should be M just to keep the little kids out.

Get out of here really? First person shooters are supposed to be for adults, Bungie and tryarch should not be our mommies. IF anything I don't think that this game is adult enough.
