Subject: A Theory on the Factions of Destiny (Updated)

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

Instead of the factions being like guilds, such as the Thieves' Guild from Skyrim, I think they are set organizations that inhabit the Destiny Universe. To get to the point, I'll just list the factions and my theory on what they represent.

New Monarchy: This is a pretty simple one, seeing how a Monarchy is a form of government and the word "new" means something that has recently come into play, so you can put two and two together. The New Monarchy is a new government that has overthrown the old one and has taken control of the solar system and/or galaxy. So all in all, there is a King and Queen, a.k.a. royalty involved. In theory, the main character might be a known or unknown decedent of this New Monarchy, thus having the decision to join it or overthrow it, for better or worse.

Seven Seraphs: Now this is a very mysterious faction, since it can take two different paths of direction. Before I continue, please take time to read this small report I drafted up:

Posted by: lime013
A seraph is celestial being having three pairs of wings, which explains those 3 blocks (or wings) coming out of the Seven Seraph symbol (look at my avatar for reference).

But another definition of seraph is an angel of the highest ranks. And where do angels live? In Heaven or the Heavens! And another word for Space is The Heavens, which is where Mercury, Venus, Earth, The Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are located. Also, those names relate to Roman Gods (In equivalent order: Mercury, Venus, Ceres, Luna, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). Those Gods can translate into abilities or powers, which once again, in equivalent order are: The Messenger, Love, Earth (Agriculture), Brightness, War, Sky/Thunder (King of the Gods), and Time. The Gods Neptune (Ocean) and Pluto (Death) are left out, but could potentially be swapped out for others.

In theory, the Seven Seraphs could be Gods of some kind.

Alright, now that that's out of the way, I'll spare you the time and put this in short: The Seven Seraphs are either related to the New Monarchy or a religious group. If this game takes place within the Milky Way Galaxy, and we have inhabited all of the places mentioned above (since Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants, think of Cloud City from Star Wars), then the Seven Seraphs are sort of miniature governments that treat the "planets" like provinces of one giant country (think Italy). If we are not in the Milky Way, then this is a religious group, which is what I stated in the above quote.

Osiris: I haven't looked into this as much as the others, but I know Osiris is the Egyptian God of the Underworld, or death. So this leads me to believe that Osiris is a religion, or possibly a counter religion to the Seven Seraphs. Just like in the medieval times (hence Monarchy . . . Well, sort of. I guess the Manor System would fit this description better, but this game is Science-Fantasy, and fantasy can relate to castles and princesses and fairies (just kidding, but yeah, Castle)) when the Christians fought the Muslims over territory. But these guys could be potential enemies, since death is related with evil.

Dead Orbit: This has a few possibilities, mainly two: The Moon (Gingrich!) or just space. If the Moon is the case, then a society was built on it, but obviously failed. If there was some sort of disaster (probably not zombies), then these guys were the survivors. Or maybe they were stranded- but nonetheless, this is a small, failed society that is dead and abandoned to the outside world, which would make the Moon a danger zone. But who knows? Maybe the protagonists, or antagonist if you're that kind of guy/gal, can return it to it's former glory. Just think of it as BioShock on the Moon. The other possibility could be that they are lost in space in the same situation. Maybe they are Space Pirates; one guess is just as good as another. But they are probably on the moon since the emblem for Dead Orbit looks like a moon revolving around a planet: Evidence #1 and Evidence #2 (Notice the atmosphiric circle around Earth, then compare it to the Dead Orbit emblem).

Update: Some more excellent theories about Dead Orbit were brought up in the comments, such as their society being destroyed by the New Monarchy as a result of a rebellion or possibly their own doings. Maybe a religious organization (potentially Osiris) put the Dead in Dead Orbit, which could have triggered a potential war, which is where the FWC would come in. Another theory about these guys is that they are bounty hunters or mercenaries hired by the New Monarchy to hunt someone or something, which could include the protagonist. (Special thanks to Dark Elation and SPAR7ANB71.)

FWC: Now I'm not sure if these guys are the Future War Cult or the Future War Council, but I'll theorize on both. The Future War Cult would be some super cult of space rednecks who are preparing for some massive war, maybe between the Seven Seraphs and Osiris. But anyways, they are armed to the teeth with deadly arsenal so they can be prepared incase of [future] war. If they are a Council, then they are related to the New Monarchy and will obviously handle the possibility of a future war. Maybe the Council could be missionaries of war prevention, too.

Update: I looked up some definitions for cult and found most of them to be based around religious extremists and such, which shows that there could be a third potential religious organization in this game. But something about the name "Future War Cult" doesn't sound like the name for a religious organization, so I found another satisfying definition: A obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing. So if I were now to summarize this definition in relation to what I've speculated, it would look something like this: An organization of people who are obsessively crazy about though of a future war to the point where they could be considered extremists about the subject. That right there was my best bet for the FWC, but any more speculation could help.

General Update #1 While I was lurking around youtube, I managed to come across this video. Ignoring the youtuber's speculation, I've managed to develop my own. First of all, if you're against link clicking, the video just reveals a potential secret message that was imbedded into a Bungie title that says "The Chosen One." If the message is true, then it could link to Destiny. Think about it: This probably does not revolve around the Master Chief because technically, he is not "The Chosen One," he's just another human who can activate the Halo Rings. Also, The Rookie is definitely not a Chosen One. Noble 6 could be a good contender, since he was chosen by Cortana to deliver her to Keyes (who later chose Chief, but whatever), but "The Chosen One" sounds more like a religious thing, which is where Destiny comes in. From my speculation, I've said that The Seven Seraphs and Osiris could be potential religious factions, so maybe you (or the main character) are chosen by one of them because you are "The Chosen One." If true, this means that Destiny has been planned since 2007, which was the year of the split between Bungie and Microsoft.

Overall, this is purely speculation and should not be taken as fact. This took me awhile to draft up, so I hope you enjoyed this read!

Very interesting OP, I love it.

Funny how you related "dead orbit" to the in-game "destiny awaits" poster because I did the exact same thing. These are great theories but my first question is..who came up with these names? I thought that a fan just assigned names to the photo's for the time being and they have kind of stuck. Has Bungie adopted these names?

I think Bungie trademarked them last year, but you can read more about it here.

So they went ahead and trademarked them...just wonder if they did it to throw us off track...or they really adopted a fans names for these 7 designs? If these ARE the names being used and they are being used in such a fashion, I would say you are on the right track!

Not sure if everything you say has any truth, but right now i'm pretty sure the moon has something to do with destiny.

People discovered the trademarks first, there was talk and rumors that they might be factions in the game, then bungie staff were spotted wearing destiny t-shirts with those emblems on them and the community just put the two together.

First off great read. My only input would be that perhaps Dead Orbit is dead because of some horrific atrocity carried out against them. Maybe by one of the zealous religious groups or perhaps the New Monarchy. All in all, this sounds like a galactic civil war, and I am definitely down with that!

According to my theory, this would be the doings of Osiris. Maybe they got their hands on some WMDs or Chemical Weapons and wiped out all life-or most life-on the Moon Colonies. If the New Monarchy is run by an "evil doer," he could have done the same because of a possible rebellion. An outside, unannounced force is a possibility. Or maybe they just destroyed themselves . . . Thanks, I'll have to update the topic with these theories tomorrow.

This is an excellent theory, and I'm glad you took the time to put it together. I was thinking something along the same lines. Though it's possible some might not even be enemies. I thought maybe Dead Orbit could be some large corporation under the jurisdiction of the New Monarchy. I was also thinking that the FWC could be secessionists, but I can't think of a reason why they would be secessionists that would also fit their name.

Dead Orbit is a very tricky one to figure out. Like I said in the main post, it looks like the Moon revolving around the Earth, but that doesn't mean it is. Your speculations on Dead Orbit bring up a likely possibility of them being a group of well known mercenaries or bounty hunters that could be tasked with hunting down the protagonist. Or maybe they're just some guys you don't want to run into.

"There's daggers in men's smiles." - Donalbain, Macbeth, Act II, scene iii

I have three theories on the FWC, all revolving around a central idea that I'm going to call the Color Theory.

The Color Theory

Please note the colors that are present in the FWC Logo: purple, yellow, and red.

For obvious reasons, it's safe to assume that purple is the main color of the FWC. However, what about the yellow and red? And not just any yellow and red, mind you. The two colors have a very specific hue that is akin to the hue seen in the Osiris and New Monarchy logos. Is it an exact match? Not quite. However, it's unlikely that these colors appearing in the FWC Logo is mere coincidence. Read on.

Future War Council - Possibility #1: It is not unusual for a middle man to arise between two large and influential nations or factions. Think the Jedi Council from Star Wars. Whenever there's a problem between the nations, the Future War Council is there to mediate the problem to avoid a violent conflict. Perhaps the FWC isn't a violent organization at all; perhaps their goal is to eliminate future wars, not provoke them. And since Osiris and the New Monarchy appear to be large factions (that are possibly rivals), electing a Council to govern them both seems like a pretty good idea.

Future War Cult (Gangbang Theory) - Possibility #2: What happens when two large, overtly strong, and equally power-hungry nations form an alliance? Those two nations become nearly unstoppable and have the ultimate say in pretty much everything, ever. Dead Orbit used to be a renowned and influential organization. That is, until the newly founded alliance between Osiris and the New Monarchy took over everything and destroyed what used to be Dead Orbit's home. Now, Dead Orbit has resorted to piracy and illegal activities to survive and take revenge on the Future War Cult - the cursed alliance between Osiris and the New Monarchy.

Future War Cult - Possibility #3: This theory has a lot of variation. The New Monarchy and Osiris are bitter rivals, and they are either A)going to war soon, or B)are already at war. The Future War Cult is a group of small factions and independent space captains who are seeking to profit from the war between Osiris and the New Monarchy. In addition to racking up funds and goods from the violent feud, it is also in the FWC's interest to bring Osiris and the New Monarchy to an end. Who needs old rivalries and unnecessary violence when you have all of space to explore? I sure as hell don't want that in my destiny; maybe the FWC isn't such a bad choice after all.

My name is Mark Mezzetta and I was a beta tester for Bungie's game Oni and Take Two's game Myth 3: The Wolf Age.

This is what I posted in my five factions thread but too many hijacked it speculating why Bungie are not selling the Seven Seraphs and Osiris shirts yet, lol.

"Seven Seraphs: Conglomerate of alien races in the same mold as the Pfhor/Covenant. This seems to be the most popular Bungie shirt in their office, Seraph is a Covenant vehicle, so Book It! ;)

FWC: The human military coalition, playing the role the UNSC/ONI played in Halo.

New Monarchy: The resistance human group serving under a leader/king. Their main rivals are the FWC.

Dead Orbit: Ancient, advanced civilization similar in vain to the Jjaro/Forerunners. They have been lost and trapped on a moon like structure orbiting a planet. (i.e. W'rkcacnter were trapped on the sun of planet Lh'owon)

Osiris: A religious cult who are outcasts to human society, possibly discovered ancient alien technology on their adventure. Either following an alien supreme (think prophets in Halo) as worshipers or leading the way to lowly alien slaves."

The New Conglomerate - They are trying to rebel against the TR

The Vanu Sovereignty - Are trying to take control using alien weapons from an extinct race?
