Why Bungie, why would you do this?! - Halo Community

Yeah, I don't think so. Think about it this way. Halo 1 was only on the PC because it was new and Bungie/Microsoft were trying to capture a good fanbase for the game. They had to pay for extra servers for CE on PC (though population had mostly countered loss of profit), Xbox was pure profit.

Halo 2 comes along, except there was no PC version on release day. Microsoft gets a ton of revenue off of H2's popularity on Xbox Live, and Halo soars into the sky of popularity. The once sizable PC community obviously shows protest and anger. In hopes of feeding off this existing fanbase, they release a poorly made port of Halo 2 for PC, that ended up being a huge, utter failure and disappointment to fans. Halo's mainstream PC fanbase scatters, and with Xbox Live becoming very popular and having a huge game series under their nose, I believe M$ ditched the PC community. Permanently.

They would announce if they had a PC version H4. And they don't.

Sorry to say it, but the PC community was really just taken advantage of until Halo got off its feet, and Microsoft realized how inexpensive and simple simply selling it on their own console would be.

And if your best counter is that O'Conner said something dodgy and misguided a YEAR ago, then you know that's wrong too.

1) They didn't pay for servers, the community did. As for the Gamespy master server, that likely costs next to nothing given how little it actually does.
2) They do however have to pay for servers to keep Xbox Live games afloat.
3) There was no Halo PC on release day either. It took around two years to arrive.
4) They've never announced a PC port before release. Why would they? Halo titles are always Xbox exclusive initially. Just because they haven't stated that there's going to be a port by this point doesn't mean there won't be.
5) Halo was already doing fine on the Xbox by the time Halo PC was released.

You're likely correct in your conclusion but the argument used to get you there is mostly factually incorrect or illogical.

Adding onto everything Bt said, you're confused as to why Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 were ported to the PC.

Halo: Combat Evolved:

After Microsoft had acquired Bungie and got them to work on Halo for the Xbox exclusively, Apple, Steve Jobs specifically, was upset because they had been showcasing Halo: Combat Evolved as a driving force for the future of Mac gaming. Microsoft ended up making a deal with them that they would release certain titles that were originally exclusive to the Xbox as PC/Mac ports. The main game being Halo: Combat Evolved.

Halo 2:

Microsoft was beginning to launch their campaign to "take over PC gaming" with Games for Windows Live. They were rounding up as many first party titles they could that made sense on the PC to launch it. It only made sense to use Halo seeing as though it was their most popular first party franchise on their console. They could have used Halo 3 but decided not to seeing as though they still wanted newer Halos to be exclusive to the 360. They figured Halo 2 was good enough and handed the work over to a sloppy one night stand type first party development team.

Halo: Combat Evolved wasn't ported because it lacked popularity from the beginning. Anyone who was old enough to truly remember will tell you it was doing very well before the PC port.

Halo 2 wasn't ported because people were making a big fuss either. If that were true we would have gotten it much sooner than we did. Microsoft doesn't give two -blam!-s about how much we want something. They look at things like this with absolutely no emotion and strict business.

Thank you, I don't know how I overlooked this. Maybe something will come around in the next trology. Halo needs supported modding and custimization that goes beyond forge for PC.

My memory and knowledge of Halo's true beginnings was bit... blurry, sorry. Thank you for correcting me. I was under the impression that Halo CE came out on the Xbox and PC at the same time, though I was aware of H2's port. Very aware. Though I still believe my main point still stands that Microsoft simply doesn't want the PC community, unfortunately.

They've tried many times to "take over PC gaming" but they continue to fail because they think they can get away with more than they really can. Games for Windows Live was the largest attempt thus far and you can easily see why they failed at it.

It's not that they don't want the PC community; it's that the PC community doesn't want them.

Halo: Combat Evolved Xbox release date: November 15, 2001
Halo: Combat Evolved PC release date: September 30, 2003

I suspect Halo was never meant to be a PC series. Back in the millennium beginnings the most powerful consoles were worse than the average PCs. That's why releasing a PC version was quite viable. In 2004, with the sequel, Microsoft gave it a try and failed. I don't see a PC Halo title in the foreseeable future.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

Eh, yes and no. It started as a Mac (which is really just a type of PC) game. Went from an RTS, to a third-person shooter, to a first-person shooter intended for release on Mac until Microsoft bought Bungie and made the game an Xbox title.
