I've been playing Halo since 2002. My earliest memories include hiding at the shotgun window on Damnation and killing my dad with grenades while playing co-op on Pillar of Autumn.

for admitting they're pirates?
Yaargh

I see threads in the Flood forum all the time with users admitting they illegally pirate software. Should this be taken seriously by the moderators and acted upon?

You're in the Community Forum. No worries, no harm no foul. Even RN54 does it.

I ♥ Bungie!

I wouldn't be too worried about it, the Flood has done worse things than just pirate software, trust me. I just think if it's "against" the rules that they should be banned.

What? I think you might be responding to the wrong post.

Anyway, yes, people who admit to or advocate illegally pirating software are banned whenever and wherever we see it. Feel free to report posts like this.

Is that against the rules? I need to read up the long version again.

I dun read the OP wrong. He is asking about a moderating rule. I thought he meant in general should pirating be banned from the internet. Whoops.

As they should be. Not just software but music and movies as well.

Piracy isn't illegal though, it isn't theft, it is sharing.

Oh Foman... I'm not one to stir the pot or nothing, but while I know what you're trying to say it's most certainly one of those "you cant but we can". Do not attempt for a second to suggest all Ninja's are innocent of such basic acts.

You might make them swear before the holy book of Achronos inside HFCS but I mean, come on, they're human.

I know you're pointing out admitting and advocating, so fine. But really, I can only imagine the humor of a mod banning for something like that, then being like "sweet, saving that link for later!"

Hah, I know that was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but rest assured that only people who pirate software think that "everyone does it" (or even "most people do it"). This statement sounds as dumb as it looks, and is demonstrably untrue. I personally find software pirating to be as detestable as theft (perhaps because they are, in fact, one and the same), and the myriad pathetic justifications that pirates come up with even more so.

Forum Ninja or not, if I find out that you pirate software of any kind, I can't respect you. And Forum Ninja or not, if you admit to or advocate it on the public forums, I will issue a ban.

In common usage, theft is the taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it.

I guess they are advocating pirating (AKA illegal activities) by admitting they are doing so. Ban them all, I say.

We're not having this discussion here. The rules are clear and will not change. If you want to debate this, go to another website.

I JUST SAID that advocating piracy on the public forums earns you a ban -- usually permanent. This will be your only warning.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

Should people who break the rules be punished for it? Why yes, indeed they should.

He sent me a warning via the disembodied soul.

Wow, go push your personal agenda somewhere else like a courtroom maybe?

I wasn't advocating piracy, as a software developer myself I would hate for my creations to be pirated. I was just stating it isn't theft.

Happy Birthday to You is 119 years old and still not in the public domain. It will still not be in the public domain until at least some time after 2030 (provided the laws don't change again before that time). If we had sensible laws regarding intellectual property I would be inclined to agree with your statements but the fact is we don't.

Tell me which is a greater example of theft: illegally downloading Happy Birthday to You or taking the following action as a music publisher...

"When the original composers of "Happy Birthday", Patty and Mildred Hill, died, the royalties were split evenly among the surviving members of their family and the current publisher Clayton F. Summy. When the brother of Patty and Mildred Hill, William Wallace Hill (who owned a one fourth interest in the song) died soon after without an heir, his lawyer, Leo Lowethall, petitioned the probate court to appoint Allen Davy (a lawyer on the bankroll of Clayton F. Smith) as administrator of his estate. Once in that position, Davy proceeded to approve an inventory that valued Hill's one-fourth interest in the song (a song that was currently generating $5000 a year) at $15. Davy then petitioned the probate court to hold a private sale of the interest, whereupon gaining permission to do so, sold Hill's interest to Clayton F. Summy Company for $25. At that point in time the publisher, Clayton F. Summy Company, held a two-thirds interest in a song they didn't even help to create, four years after the song was copyrighted." Source (p. 47)

Edit: And to go a bit further in relation to the OP, could I be banned for saying I am a member of the Pirate Party and that I voted for them (I'm not and I didn't but hypothetically)?

Door Kickers Inc.

Pretty sure pirating is already banned. I mean look at Somalia!

All jokes aside, pirating software or media is not something I would do. I'm still not sure what my opinion is on it's legality.

I think you might be my favorite ninja. Just saying. I'm visual effects artist and pirating is a much bigger issue than most people realize.
