"Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." - James T Kirk

And they built this ship where and in how long? It took the UNSC years to reverse engineer Jackal Shields for Mjolnir. How could the UNSC remotely pull resources together for a project like this? And where did the Science come from for it? Earth's smartest was marooned on Reach then a shield world. Halsey could practically read Forerunner (to an extent).

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

It's a Science-Fiction Universe based on a game. I'm sure anything could just appear, like a whole battalions of new Spartans or a whole new set of events on pre-established canon, if some writers just pulled ink to paper.

Oh wait....

Apparently ONI magically had a station of Halo ring 03, some unknown timeframe ago. Infinity was under construction for a year, or years, by time of halo 3. It also had Spartan IV's on it at that time.

And yeah, it's something some of us bring up and others toss aside as a stupid trivial detail.

Apparently ONI can now pull stuff out of it's ass without regard for resources, time, or any sort of realism in halo universe.

Halo CE is 04.
Halo 2 is 05.

Halo ring 03 is the one ONI has a station over. Glasslands does nothing more then namedrop it at the start of a chapter, no explanation given or timeframe of how long it's been there.

Tis the trend of 343. Namedrop stuff out the window, never explain anything at the same time.

How did they find Instillation 3?

  • 07.10.2012 3:14 PM PDT

As said, we don't know.

It's merely namedropped as being the location of an ONI space station in the end of glasslands (not even in the chapter text, but as the location/time bit right before).

Even in the chapter it's not mentioned or referenced. It's just namedropped as being there, without a single explanation.

20 years to build a starship is too quick for you?

Ever more convinced that you're needlessly hating it. They've said time, and time again that Infinity's been under construction for over twenty years. What the hell is this "year" bull -blam!-?

Want to know why Installation 03 was found and when? That's what sequels are for, you should look up the definition.

[Edited on 07.10.2012 4:24 PM PDT]

Please, note the "year, or years" Aka, I was unsure the exact amount of time.

Also, it's just stupid to suddenly go "Oh hey, ONI has a station above halo ring 03, that's where the chapter takes place. We won't ACTUALLY MENTION the damn ring anywhere in the chapter, or how, when, and why ONI has a station here that has never before been mentioned in canon."

Sure, it might be explained in the next book. But to just randomly go "This takes place in orbit of this structure." and not once mention it, or say a thing until the next book is just... bleh.

Like the Infinity and Spartan IV's. Sure, they might not play a major part, if any in Glasslands, but WHY do they need mentioned now with a line basically going "They are completely awesome, but we aren't going to say anything about them."

I don't hate the ship, I hate how it's described/introduced. I hate how it's magically got tech despite you know, the fact the UNSC hasn't had a forerunner thing to study for 20 years.

They sure has hell haven't have any forerunner ships to study for that long. Cause then Halsey would've been involved (being the TOPMOST forerunner expert), and she never mentions it. Likewise, to reverse engineer systems for the ship, they'd have to have the original. So yeah, I have issue with them suddenly, with no explanation given at all, going "Oh, ONI has a station here for years, and there is forerunner ships on the surface that the monitor gladly let them take apart and study."

Because the answers to all of those questions weren't relevent to the scene or story at the time. Parangosky is interrogating Halsey; why would she state the very obvious fact--to them--that they're floating next to a Halo?

They will be relevant at some point, but for now, just an introduction. Bear in mind that everything so far has essentially just been introduction for Halo 4. In the end what matters is that answers are given. When they're given isn't important. Infinity, we know, is being covered extensively in Thursday War. After Thursday War comes out, is anyone really going to care that Infinity was just mentioned in Glasslands?

With the Halo ring, you can argue that the reason Halsey is there is so she can help research Installation 03 while under the eyes of Parangosky. Parangosky is still using Halsey--no one said she wasn't--but she has her under lock and key. But all we can do until we know for sure is speculate. And speculation is the point of this forum. I'd rather small hints and clues be revealed than just answers out of the gate.

The Infinity isn't just a Forerunner ship--people talk about those aspects more simply because they're the most impressive. Most of the tech is Covenant; in fact I'd wager that at the time of Glasslands, all of it was Covenant. It would have been only recently that the Infinity would have gotten any real amount of Forerunner upgrades in it, after Trevelyan was researched.

Any Forerunner tech that might have been onboard pre-Trevelyan would likely be small. A ship isn't just weapons, shielding, armor and engines. There could have been mild upgrades like communications, computer efficiency and so on. Onyx may have yielded any such upgrades. Even then we don't know exactly how much of the tech onboard is Forerunner post-Trevelyan, or even Covenant for that matter, only that at least some of it is.

And they built this ship where and in how long?

In a secret facility located in the Oort Cloud on the very periphery of the Sol system. No idea how long construction lasted for. "Years" is the best indication we have got.

Posted by: Onomatopoeia
It took the UNSC years to reverse engineer Jackal Shields for Mjolnir.

Only because almost all Covenant technology was tamper-proof. You cannot study what you do not have access to.

Posted by: Onomatopoeia
How could the UNSC remotely pull resources together for a project like this?

The same place they pulled knowledge of the Elites being weak enough so that a civil war would have any relative effect on them for ONI to "finish the job" or at least for them to be a non-threat:

Their ass.

Posted by: Onomatopoeia
And where did the Science come from for it?

The aforementioned Jackal Shield gauntlet might be a good place to start. It may have opened up entirely knew and previously unconsidered options in Humanity's understanding of physics and engineering.

Posted by: Onomatopoeia
Earth's smartest was marooned on Reach then a shield world. Halsey could practically read Forerunner (to an extent).

I'm sure Halsey isn't the only intelligent Human alive. Just like I hate the idea that the UNSC can't do anything without a Spartan there to hold their hands like wee little babies, so I dislike the idea that Halsey has to be around in order for anyone to make a scientific breakthrough. Humanity got to Tier 3 without Halsey, and I'm sure they will go farther without her in future when she's dead.

On the one hand it is good to see the UNSC make some progress out of the almost century long stagnation, but the Infinity perhaps pushes it a little bit.

The way i see it is that ONI is like the U.S. government during the cold war, most of the projects their working on their own people don't know about. As for finds and material, it's ONI they pretty much have a blank check due to the war.

Only, they are never given a 'blank check.'

Remember, they don't give S3's MJOLNIR armor... DUE TO COSTS.

ONI Never, ever had a blank check. Glasslands they just basically syphon off and steal what they need.

ONI probably has a blank check NOW.

I don't know how or why.

But do they even need funding?

They have their own resources, their own Forerunner artifacts, they can probably be self sufficient even though they are still linked to the UNSC.

Even then, why would they get a blank check... after the war is over and all efforts should be placed on rebuilding?

ONI isn't related to the rebuilding efforts. Hell, the fact glasslands says they both have their own resource base and supplies, yet has to drain resources and funding from the UNSC conflicts.
