13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

This has always bothered me, but I've never bothered to ask.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Because everything was falling apart and there would have nothing left to keep the portal stable?

Right now there are two main theories floating around. The first one, that the Ark couldn't sustain itself and the Portal collapsed. Like Cortana said. The second theory is that Medicant Bias changed the destination of the Portal on purpose. Medicant Bias was on installation 00 at the time Chief escaped. MB talks to Chief through the terminals. Here's an example.

"And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions. But I would have my masters know that I have changed. And you shall be my example."
- Mendicant Bias to John-117.

Look at the underlined part, Medicant Bias wants to show his "Masters" that he has come back from rampacy. So, he intends to show his "Masters", Masterchief. In short, Medicant Bias changed the vector of the Portal when the ship was half way through. So that MasterChief could face his "Master".

I'm sure the real reason will be revealed in Halo 4.

I thought the portal was being upheld by the artifact on Earth? It would make sense if the portal was attached to both the artifact and the ark, but when all the ships go through the portal, they just enter through space, not any portal.

The portal is how you get into Slipspace. You open a "portal" then fly into it, to enter slipspace. If only half of the ship went into the portal, then only half of the ship is going to come out on the other side.

Please don't hype for games...
They'll just fall short of your expectations and you'll complain for months.

Ignoring Korra's logical post, the power of a firing halo ring will probably do that to some of the nearby technology. The portal has to be sustained on both sides...

But there wasn't even a portal present. When all the ships went into the portal, they didn't come out a big, singular one, like the one they entered, did they?

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The charging and eventual firing of the newly constructed Halo ring was too much for the Ark to withstand, and it collapsed since I imagine the portal generators were decimated by the firing.

Hold on, so right here, you can see the portal that everyone goes through to get to the Ark. But when they actually arrive at the Ark, there's no exit portal, they all just come through individually. So what exactly was the Forward Unto Dawn heading back through at the end of the game?

Wort, wort, wort

It needed the Ark there to be able to stay open. It collapsed because the Ark collapsed

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

I personally think it was a mixture of the two main theories. That's probably why the Arbiter got left behind and split from the Chief rather then the entire thing going through to a different destination. I think it's pretty obvious the drift towards requiem was deliberate. Beyond the whole "it was by chance" comparison.

But yeah waiting till Halo 4 would be your best bet at finding the answer.

The one thing that your forgetting is that half of the ship made it through, and the other half got transported near requiem. I believe that nullifies that theory.

The Portal is sustained on two ends, the structure on Earth that the covies dug up, and the Ark.

One of those exploded.

Okay, that makes sense, but the portal isn't visible above the Ark.

Did you notice how far away the portal was from the ark?

they probably came through the big portal and then to get a tactical advantage on the brutes slipspace'd behind their fleet, and they can do precise jumps like that due to them being covie ships.

Medicant Bias might have not wanted Thel on-board with Chief.
