defnop552
Q: Let's start with an easy question, who are you and where are you from?A: That's a good question. You may (or may not) recognise my username defnop552 but in the real world my name is Ronan, Ronan being Irish for "Little Seal", and I live in Ireland. If you want to go into technicalities, I live in Northern Ireland. Home to the first "City Of Culture". And before you ask. Yes, It's always raining.

Q: No worries. It's always rainy here in Seattle. Are you in high school or college? Or do you already have a full-time job?A: I've just finished my last year of secondary school, which I believe to be the equivalent of your High School, and should be heading to university in September to study "Music Composition and Technology for Film and Games". It's possible that you could be playing a game in the not too distant future with audio so terrible that you'll want to punch everyone who was involved in its creation right in the face. If that's the case then that will have been my handy-work.

Apart from that, I'm just enjoying my summer.

Q: So you plan on becoming a Music Composer for future games and movies? I've always appreciated the awesome music playing in the background of dramatic action films. What made you want to become a musician?A: Well I guess it stems from my parents. I don't know if it's the case for everyone but for me my musical taste definitely originated from my Dad. He loved Guns and Roses and Neil Young, The Beatles and, most importantly, Pink Floyd. My Dad was my idol, so whatever he did. I did. Whatever he listened to. I listened to. As we grow older and develop our own independent taste in music, you never truly outgrow any of the stuff you listened to when you were younger. I'll always find my way back to Pink Floyd and I'm sure there's a band or song you'll always return to.

See that part I mentioned about copying my dad? Yeah, that's why I wanted to be a musician. Since he played guitar it was only natural that I would copy. I got my first guitar (I think it was a Black and White Encore Les Paul) when I was about 9. Being 9 I assumed that "Hey, I listen to Rock music. This is going to be easy!!!". ....I can't describe how terrible I was when I unboxed the guitar and tried to play Paradise City. Terrible doesn't even come close. But, like everything, perseverance always pulls through. After 2 years of playing "Wonderwall" incorrectly (Yes, I played it wrong for that long!) something just switched in my brain and I got very good, very fast. At this point in time I've been playing guitar for around *8 years. *10 if you include the two years of wonderwall-ing)

A great man once said, "Music transcends language". I honestly have no idea who said that, but it's a great quote.

I guess the dream of being a Rockstar was what drove me to keep playing guitar. As I grew up I knew that it was good to have dreams, but it's even more important to have realities. That's why I've shifted my career path from "Rockstar" to "Composer". Back to the question. Musicians are just soo much cooler than non-musicians!

That's why I did it. For the infinite babes.

Q: Being a rockstar isn't all that glamorous. Having to perform your heart out for days on end on tours takes a toll on you. Composers have an easier life and still get all the babes. But none of this explains the username, can you elaborate on that?A: Back in 2002 my friend, Barry, won an Xbox in a school raffle for £2. Not only was it a great deal but it also came with a couple of games. Halo and Timesplitters 2 are the only games I can remember being part of the package, but it did have a few others. Anyway, Barry and I would play co-op everyday on Halo and Timesplitters 2, so eventually he insisted that I should make an account. It was then that I was faced with a serious conundrum; What should I name my account? I stared at the screen for a good few minutes pondering on epic and cool names. Eventually I was told to hurry up or I would be given a name. Timesplitters 2 used the "ABCD" keyboard in which I noticed a pattern. "D E F" were directly above "N O P". I though that sounded cool so I chose that as my handle.

The 552 comes from when I tried to make my Xbox live account. I made a mistake when registering "Defnop", so I was forced to adopt a slightly altered name. Why 552? I don't really know. It just has a certain ring to it. Defnop552.

Even to this day the "552" hurts my soul. If I could I would have it taken off.

Q: Numbers at the end of an account aren't necessarily a bad thing. Unless it's some crazy amount of numbers. Three numbers is just the right amount. So why did you pick Bnet as your "cyber hangout"?A: After Halo 2's release Barry started to visit the HaloBabies.net website. He asked me to help him make a few comics and since I couldn't really draw I just contributed jokes....which probably weren't funny. So that's when I started browsing HBN, but despite the great comics it didn't really interest me that much. I eventually found my way to Bnet at the start of '07. I would mainly just read the front page for updates but as time passed and Halo 3 came closer to release, I began to visit bnet more frequently. I would visit the forums despite not having an account and it seemed like a pretty cool place. Since our internet at the time was....sub par, I decided to hold off making my account until our internet was better. Around the start of 08' I got Xbox live and finally joined the Bnet community. I started off like most users do, eager to make an impact. I had a high PPD in the first few months and I think I reached Heroic in 2 months, which totally made me a hit with the ladies and Qbix.

I calmed down on my posting after around 3 months and I joined the Fyreball website. I had pretty much left bnet at that point but I would log in occasionally so my account wouldn't be deleted and to read the BWU. After Fireball's untimely death, I found my way back to Bungie and I've been here pretty much ever since.

You've probably seen me post somewhere on the website. If not, I hate you! If you've seen the "Ninja Caption Contest" or the "Rorschach Inkblot Challenge" then you've seen some of my contributions to Bnet.

Q: Qbix loves people who attain Heroic within 2 months. The ladies adore anybody with a title higher than Member. How do you feel about being so active in the community?A: Ladies do not, however, love Qbix. Coincidence? Who knows!?

I've never really thought of myself as being that active. Sure, I'm online a lot but I've never really been a big name in the community. I've always wanted to help the community by creating a "F.A.Q" thread but all the good ones are taken! Instead of making terrible attempts at informative "F.A.Q" threads, I stick to helping people with their queries. I'm knowledgeable on most topics on the site and If I can't get you a satisfactory answer or solution in 30 minutes or less then your pizza is free.

Ever since I turned mythic I think I've been noticed a little bit more on the forums. I went from the loser table to the cool table...you guys are just so shallow!

One thing I'm very active in is reporting! I love reporting! I love reporting so much that I sometimes I report people who haven't even broken any rules! Take THAT everyone who isn't me!

Q: Whoa, you lost me there with the compulsive reporting. Aside from that, it's been a pleasure chatting with you. If there is anyone on or off Bnet you would like to acknowledge, now's the time to show them some love.A: We both know that I'm going to report this interview when it's posted!

I'd like to thank the Bnet community for helping me improve my writing skills, Qbix for helping me when I was new to the forums, everyone who has made a "F.A.Q" thread, the moderating team for not taking my compulsive reports seriously, and, finally, every single user that has posted on the forums since bungie has gone dark and provided me with something to read while I was on the toilet.

P.S. I never though I'd be a Community Joe and I am very honoured and humbled to be featured...I'm still going to report this thread though.

Thanks.
-Ronan.
