You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

Personally I feel that the third person perspective in general offers more flexibillity in game design as it gives the player more visual information than the first person perspective. It allows the player to actually see his environment, which allows developers to give the player more mobillity as he need not worry about falling off a cliff that he couldn't see to his side. As for the immersion, I'd argue that it's simply easier to immerse the player when he's playing from the first person perspective, but the same effect is accomplishable with enough work from the third person perspective.
I haven't played a ton of third person shooters persay, but the ones I've seen root you to the ground and force you to fight from cover. That's not like the game I have in my mind, but I feel the third person perspective would be much more interesting and unique than the first person perspective, especially since the market is flooded with FPS's at the moment.
I get the feeling though that Destiny probably will be an FPS in the end though =\You made very valid points about the downsides of most third person shooters. First there is hardly any vertical gameplay, this leads to a lot of sneaking around corners and pretty bland flow from one area to another. I also have never been a fan of the cover system. Hiding behind your piece of concrete and waiting for the enemy's head to pop up behind their piece of concrete becomes very repetitive. Being able to crouch and use cover in video games is great but the magnetism and the fact that every enemy uses cover forces the player to use it too. If Bungie doesn't stick to the common third person gameplay then they could create a game that stands out.
I also don't like the fact that the market is currently flooded with FPS's, but since it's confirmed that Destiny is going to be a shooter I guess we don't have very many options. Top down shooters also are suffering from repetitive gameplay, maybe Bungie is creating something new.
