Subject: What if title bars were less random, and went by rep?

I'm sure many of you know what rep is, and how it works. Many other forums use this and it works great. It is somewhat similar to title bars, but users decide who gets it.

For those of you who don't know, when a user does something helpful, such as a helpful reply in the thread, the OP may "+rep" that user. This adds to the users reputation. Other people can add to that users rep as well, not just the OP.

Lets say that when users reach certain milestones, their title bar will get upgraded.

1500- Legendary
3000- Mythic

Maybe Bungie could add other features, such as bans causing negative rep depending on the severity of the ban.

Title bar prefixes such as "noble" "honorable" etc will still work the same. Do you guys agree with this?

Five years older and wiser
The fires are burning, I'm fire, never tire
Slay warriors in the forests, and on hire

Might make me go gym to get that mythic title.

If the title system was less random, someone would find out the algorithms of the title system by making multiple accounts and finding out how different amounts of posts, bans, etc would affect the system. Then someone will create a fairly accurate set of formulas for members to find out when they rank up. If this happened, Achronos would throw a hissy fit. We don't want that.

I respect your opinion, but do you mind explaining why? Lets get some more discussion going in this thread.

I see potential with an idea like this, but there are two questions. Would this feature work (referring to scale)? Would it be possible to "game" the system?

  • 07.13.2012 12:17 PM PDT

But then I'd still be the lowest possible rank.

Rep system? Nah. Thank system? Now that might work.

What exactly is the problem with an exact formula? That would set goals for the user. And goals often encourage behavior. For example, I am trying to lose weight at the gym. I don't just work out everyday to see where it takes me, I set goals. This is a better idea IMO.

However, I can predict that someone would go around begging people for rep. How do we stop that? Making that a bannable offence?

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

So, we'd be turning the whole site into one big popularity contest then? No thanks.

I'd still rather just see the titles go away.

So a like system? "Orlando 1971 likes this". However, likes are usually less important than +rep. So maybe a like system could be used without affecting title bars? Just to kind of thank the user for their hard work?

What do you think?

Hey I am a big Bungie fan ever since I played Halo 2. I love the series, I love Bungie. I have made a few Bungie logos in my metal shop.

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit,
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it."
-Omar Khayyám-

there is potential for your system but you left too many holes like how to deter multiple threads from users asking for rep, detering users from discovering the exact formula of the rep system, how to implement such a system large scale.

Good try though, I say an A for effort.

Many reasons. One of the big ones being that the site isn't about the users, it's about the community as a whole and the content centered around Bungie.

I'd wholeheartedly support that if Achronos wasn't so paranoid about us figuring out the system.

  • 07.13.2012 12:25 PM PDT

Well a thank system works in that whenever you're grateful for what someone has said, you thank them. It'll say "user has been thanked ___ times in ___ posts." A title system based off of that would promote helpful discussion but also make everyone in the forum pretty big Mr Rogers-like kissasses, trying to help everyone all the time.

"May I take your hat, sir?"

If you assign every letter of the alphabet a number, a is 1, b is 2, etc., and you take all of the values of the word "MATH", and add them, you get 42. So math is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one. Has Achronos ever explained why he doesn't want users to know? Is it fear of boosting? I think we could ban users begging for rep. The first time is a warning, the second time you lose rep. And if you keep doing it, you will lose more rep.

Also, maybe we could subtract rep from users who +rep those begging? Not a substantial amount, maybe 3-10? Not sure. I think these 2 rules will deter users asking for rep.

I hate rep with a passion. They just never seem to work properly on any website, and someone with low rep is ignored most of the time.

I'm either a fool or an inteligent man, depending on how sleepy or angry I am.

I originaly made an account on 07.27.2007 but I wanted to link my GT and made this account. Don't forget your passwords!

Normaly I wouldn't come here to just say no, but -blam!-ing no. That's an awful idea and I hate rep systems. The higher your rep the more people assume you are right that by itself is a stellar reason not to have it.

Why does Bungie.net not have a rep system you ask? Becasue it's better than that.

EDIT: It's also far too easy to game the system.

While I respect your opinion and somewhat agree that that is a problem, I don't see how that isn't a current problem? The title bars are the same, but the way of achieving them is different. So really, people respect Mythic members more now than regular members.

Another reason why I'm against rep on every forum I use.

I judge each and every person here by their post and posts alone. "Member"s are wild cards and they can range from great to bad to whoevenknows. Anyone that has any sort of title other than just "Member" usualy doesn't get banned as often and does less 'bad' things. Why is this true? It is becasue it takes an account a long time to earn a title.

People should respect Mythic members becasue of the same reason people respect their elders. They have been here longer and generaly do more reasonable things. With rep on the other hand it's possible to get 1,000+ rep in a single post (Yes I've seen that happen before).

I don't judge posts by the titlebars, never have. I have seen Mythic members get banned before. With the title system it's something they have to earn and, as I said before, it is far to easy to game the system with the rep system.

To put it simply: Posted by: orlando1971
The title bars are the same, but the way of achieving them is different.
That is a key point, the way you earn titles is diffrent.

While having a rep system is good in theory... It's actual application has far too many loopholes. I always end up hating the rep system on other sites. I do not want or expect to see it here.
