You imply a level of control over Halo: Reach matchmaking that we no longer have. Or, in your vernacular, it isn't our shiznit anymore.

I don't like the rep system, the motivation for posting is turned into a competition of points rather than aiming for good discussion.

Popularity contest.

Also, I wouldn't say the title system is "random". It's programmed to work that way.

I work for the Department of Defense.

Yeah, the current system is in no way random.

If you post a lot, you get a stupid title like intrepid or fabled. If you rarely post, you get a title like exalted.

If you could get "rep" everyone would just -blam!- each other. and make LOTS of alt accounts to "rep" their own posts.

It's already bad enough that people know that posting endlessly stupid and empty threads get you a higher title "faster" (arguable).

edit - omg, it's censored, lol.

What exactly is the problem with an exact formula? That would set goals for the user. And goals often encourage behavior.

But a rep system isn't based on behavior, it is based on clicks. Clicks that can be gamed or otherwise manipulated.

Example? When the system which determines video game rankings is understood, mapped and then widely exploited, the ranks cease to show either ability or accomplishment.

By no longer showing performance or ability, but rather the individuals willingness to complete the steps required for the desired outcome, they invalidate and undermine the intent and purpose of the ranks (to show skill, arrange suitable matches, etc.).

We know enough of the title system to be able to predict and sense the general patterns, so it isn't exactly random. Implementing a reputation system and coordinating it with titles, to put it simply, wouldn't achieve what it's set out to do; and that is to reward quality posts. Not to mention the problems that come with allowing users to control the system.

A rep system could easily be abused. The randomness of the current system allows for a feeling of "I did something right, but I don't know what it was."

It only takes a simple question to change everything.

No. Rep always gets abused. There are no exceptions. The more rep a user has, the higher the chance of his rep being boosted due to abuse becomes.

I agree. It would have to have a really complex rep system.

Maybe certain members' clicks could count more than others. If that member is relatively new member with no prefixes and doesn't have an xbox live account linked, then that member's click has little to no impact. If that member is an older mythic exalted member with a gamertag linked to his or her account, then it would have far more impact.

Could work.

It wouldn't work.

People would figure it out. Join private groups and "boost" each other. Then there is alt accounts as well.

Is this not also true the way it is now? I know a ton of people who would (and do) slam their face on the keyboard just to get a high enough post count to get or keep a title/prefix.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

The title bars are not random - they run off of a complex (well, it used to be complex) system. We get rep ("trust rating") without individual users influencing it; the system grants reputation to those who deserve it, and removed it from those who don't.

Besides, we don't want '10 Mythics for at least another two years.

Since when is Legendary > Mythic?

Whenever mine changes, which seems to be weekly.

I find the repetitive changing to be quite disenchanting of this site.

Mythic v15 coming up soon....

Haters are going to hate.
Praisers are going to praise.

The Bungie Forums are what keeps my mind sharp and my fingers active, between writing my own movie scripts, drawing, and studying industrial design. At the moment I'm working on miniatures for a short movie that I'll hopefully be able to film once I've saved up for a camera... That's me, with the mug, trying to have a conversation with Konoko.

But what is a quality post? Wouldn't it be based on opinion anyway? If so, wouldn't that just shape a narrow general consensus, since most poeple inevitably respect the options of those who have a high rank, which in its case only could be accomplished by having a certain mind set? Wouldn't that just end in a loop of regurgitated opinions, freezing out anyone with a minority opinion?
