Coxx probably beat me, but in the off chance that the answer is expected to be in radians, my answer actually reduces down to: arccos((1-(a)/(2(pi)))).

Good Game Coxx, Good Game.

  • 07.13.2012 12:51 PM PDT

arccos(a/(2*pi)-1)

Hyle, my answer doesn't contain r so I think I actually went wrong somewhere.

I can't see it on my sheet of paper where I DID go wrong to not be able to legitimately cancel out r, but I sent my working to Deej via pm (because I thought that's what we were supposed to do) so hopefully the math guru who made the question can give me the right way of doing it.

Game's still on methinks

Then again, looking at yours twice knowing that you did it in radians they do look mightily similar..

Anyways wow that's a pretty awesome question. I love geom and I don't even know where to begin, really.

I'll go see if I can make anything of that.

in answer to the formula, if you take the hieth you can use the radius as the base and solve using the pythagorean theorem.
LOL. This is going to be a great challenge.

Just in case someone makes the mistake, I actually had this answer before both Hylebos and Coxx, just I had the degrees form.

Good work, Hylebos and Coxx. This was a fun problem.

For those who are having trouble, the trick is to relate it using surface area. The surface area of the cone has to be equal to the surface area of the circle. Lets call the radius of the base of the cone r, and the radius of the circle R, and the angle of the wedge a.

The surface area of just the pointy part of the cone (not the base) is equal to (pi)rR. The surface area of the circle with the wedge taken out of it is (pi)R^2 - aR^2/2.

So now we want to solve for little r to set up a trigometric equation that will find us the theta we are looking for...
(pi)rR = (pi)R^2 - aR^2/2
Divide by pi
rR = R^2 - aR^2/2(pi)
Divide by R
r = R - aR/2(pi)

We know that the cos(theta) = r / R, substituting in r we get...

cos(theta)= R - aR/2(pi) / R
Simplify
cos(theta)= 1 - a/2(pi)
Take the arccos of both sides...
theta = arccos(1 - a/2(pi))

And there's your answer.

It ended up canceling out for me too.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

sack that, I bollocksed up which letter is which.

oop, and while I was typing it out, hylebos went all maths professor on us... Good stuff.

Having a punt with this, but not feeling too good about it. Worked it out on the back of a wedding invitation, and I think I've overcomplicated it. Certainly, other peoples' answers look a lot simpler..

Haha.

Well, we'll see if we got it right. We could've been completely wrong, too.

Yeah, haha, Hylebos even wrote out the process. I love when Bungie does stuff like this though. It made me use my school brain for the first time in two months.

to determine slope, grade of an angle or cone in this case, you take r over a or rise over run.

Steepness is S

S=R/A
