My god, you people are so afraid of change.
I don't think anybody's afraid of change, I just think that nobody agrees what the change should be.
People want change, they don't know what change they want.

People want change without actually changing.

Meh, it wouldn't matter to me honestly. I sorta do like the simplistic nature of this website though.

Bye.

I'm torn on this idea.

One the one hand I can see it being a quick and practical way of viewing how well opinions and ideas are accepted by the community. "This post has 45 thumbs up; it must be good!".

But I can also see it being manipulated by people who want to have the highest rating, like you see on YouTube. It's full of people begging for "Thumbs up" and I'm sure it wouldn't be long before people start using alts, and asking for people to vote on their post.

Unless the system had a direct effect on trust rating or post reply order, I don't see why it would matter if people cheated. It's just a silly little number. It doesn't matter that much if someone has higher number than they should.

This is a social website and we need this kind of feature. Also, it can't be abused if it's just visual and has nothing to do with the trust rating.

Well you'd get a lot of people not bothering to reply and instead just like/disliking posts. Same thing happens with poll threads.
Look at Waypoint, it's only the first 5 posts in a thread seem to get the likes/dislikes anyway. Usually there's one just posting 'I disagree' first without explanation so everyone can jump up and 'like' it.

That being said, there are some features found on Facebook I'd love to see here. A notification system based on threads you make or choose to watch, a friend/block list with possible IM abilities and probably some other stuff.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

We should have the system where people can upvote or downvote threads, amirite?

I like the idea of some form of thread rating system. I also would like to see the amount of views one particular thread gets. Also, having photos/videos imbedded into a post could be beneficial. However, obviously you'd need permission or possibly some status on the forums to prevent people from posting inappropriate content.

None of those are valid reasons. I really dislike the "this isn't Facebook" argument because no one can come up with anything to back it up other than "I don't like Facebook."

Just sayin'

But why would we need a like or dislike feature? I can't see any reason as to why it would make the site better at all. We can already see if a thread is liked by the amount of replies. Any threads that are not liked here I find quickly die out.

I'm pretty sure half the people who say 'this isnt Facebook' don't actually have an account.
Facebook has some good features, which is probably why it gets more traffic than Youtube.
Personally with the 'thumb up/down' thing I couldn't care less, as long is was really subtle.

Its good for factual comments, if someone is asking a question and there's mixed responses and answers. Rather than quote someone or make another comment to back them up (which some people can't be bothered doing), you can simply give the comment a thumbs up (or thumbs down if someone says 'delete system 32' for example) so people can see how reliable the information is without reading through pages of text.
