Meh, I'd rather have an icon that "thanks" users for good posts. Like on Waypoint.

  • 07.15.2012 5:26 AM PDT

I'd rather just leave it the way it is to be honest. Many lack the judgement for a like system; liking posts because of popularity or people being mislead by posts being liked which are in fact wrong statements etc. etc.

I'm not thankful for someone having given an opinion I agree with. They didn't do anything for me. I just happen to *like* they're opinion.

I like the idea of being able to leave positive feedback on a quality or helpful response with a "+1" or whatever it may be but we can leave out the "-1" part and leave the report feature for those deserving of a "-1".
I would give your post a -1, but you're telling me I should report you for it instead.

Can you see how that idea falls flat?
The "ignore" feature...obviously. Such a good thread.

And yet clicking "like" on a post rather than making your own simply takes away from discussion. The forums are made for discussion. If someone thinks someone has a good argument or statement, they can say they agree with it, add more of their own thoughts, build on a particular outlook and make their voice heard so to speak. People should be encouraged to post, not click like and leave the thread.

Not true. All it takes away is the part of your post where you would've QFT'd or this'd. Because that's what liking is, saying "this" without saying "this".

Like all features which are suggested for the site, their success ultimately depends on how people use them. I hate to be depressing but I find that accomodating the lowest common denominator is usually the safest way to go. But, go on, surprise me.

Fair enough, but could we do something besides +1? It seems so Facebook like..how bout something more to the lore of Bungie? Something that fits in seamlessly...

It's still nicer to see users who are AT LEAST sincere enough to post how they agree with someone and hopefully explain why in addition. The like button is just something else to encourage people not to put forward their own thoughts on something when someone else has similar thoughts.

-1 again.

Neither of you are seeing my point. I'm disagreeing with what you're both saying, yet you tell me I should either report or ignore you instead.

That's the kind of stuff you should be concerned about since it's a discussion-killer.

You're not getting it. With a like or approve system in place, you "Approve" a post you think is good or expresses your opinion, then you post to elaborate your point or the point further. The like system gets rid of one kind of post, the ones where people would've just quote-posted, this'd, or QFT'd and done nothing else. I'm not saying they're the only people who can utilize the feature, but the people who post like that ( in an unconstructive and not-so-helpful manner ) could definitely use it.

People don't quote-post because they want to show an extra amount of sentiment for the person their quoting, they do it because there is no alternative, and there are even more who just pass it up because even quote posting is too much. People who want to participate will still participate. People who lurk now have one more way to express their opinion without having to make a pointless post containing no more than a quote.

I like the idea of a Like system.

I like the idea, but here are my concerns:

1. You said that your post icon would appear when voting or approving a post or thread. Where will they appear(in the thread or on the forum), and how many icons will be displayed at once?

2. Will users be able to approve of posts, or only threads?

3. What will happen to our B.net emblems?

4. Will this approval count for anything else than thread popularity?

Thank you for taking to time to post this idea and reading through our endless responses.

People would post things purely for sake of getting "votes" and a lot of threads would be made simply agreeing with an opinion so they can get "votes". Actual discussion would be buried beneath all the redundant things that would made all for the sake of a meaningless number.

So, no, I don't like a "thumbs up" idea.
How do you know?

Just look at reddit.
Reddit is not set up like Bungie.net in any way.

The concept of '+1', or 'upvoting', is the same no matter what. People are always going to get it stuck in their minds that having more of them makes them more important.

You know all of that crap you see on Facebook, 'Like/share if you do XYZ' or 'Like/share if you agree'? Prepare to see that plastered all over the Flood if anything like this is implemented. I like the idea of the system, but in the end it always turns out to be horribly mis-used.

Also, just to prevent people from approving a mountain of posts just to get their stamp out there and be super popular on the internet, you would only be allowed 5-10 "stamps" per day (haven't decided the right number). This way you would have to really think which posts are worth receiving your stamps of approval.

How can you not know what the correct number of stamps would be? It's SO obvious. You would be allowed 7 stamps!

One final idea I had that doesn't really fit anywhere would be the idea of double+ stamping a post. This meaning that you would use more than one of your daily stamps on a post to show extra levels of agreement. This might take away the significance of a single stamp, but it's just an idea (as is everything else I've said in this post).

You either agree with someone, or you disagree. There is no middle. If there is a middle, the correct thing to do would be to post a reply and share your opinion.

Overall I like the idea.

Then you make the a bannable offense just like making a thread with a rigged poll is spam and therefore bannable. And the point of the Approve system would mainly be for posts. It could be implemented for threads, but even if it was there would just be a number next to the thread name. Everything would still be organized chronologically by the last post time.

That's the thing people aren't seeming to get from this. It's just a like system. It's not some sort of popularity counter. I mean, it could be, but (unlike the Waypoint system) this wouldn't be calculated in any form viewable by the general public or any regular user. Its just a less boring method of showing approval for a certain post.

Another thought has occurred to me.

If the author of a topic post wanted to seek out if people agree or disagree with an idea, back & white, could they not simply put a poll in the initial post?

Bye.

I don't understand why would have to have a limited number of stamps per day. I think you said it was to stop people from spamming but I don't see what the problem is. It's a little non-obtrusive stamp. It would be like giving people a limited number of posts a day to try and counter spam, it's just silly.

OP, while your system as you describe would limit the one word post of support to a post a bnet'er agrees with, it can also lead to a discussion lkiller.

So rather than posting your approval or disapproval of a comment and giving your reasons why, people will just hit +1 or -1 to voice their opinion.

This would kill the potential discussion a thread can produce b/c people will merely hit a button.

1. As I said in the OP, (maybe you missed it, that's fine), they would probably appear in a row next to the time stamp. I also mentioned that to keep people from being annoyed, you could change a setting to make them only appear once a button was pressed.

2. The idea was actually more meant for posts, instead of threads.

3. They remain the same, these are just the stamps that appear when you like something or approve it or whatever it's called.

4. It's not even about thread popularity, it's just about showing approval of a post ( or thread I guess ).

It's an explanation of a like system, afraid I can't come up with any sort of synopsis that would allow you to discuss it.
