I like the islands, but it limits people who like to hoof it, or use ground vehicles to dominate. If they put a lot of teleporters in the level it would even out, something like the Halo 1 multiplayer map Boarding Action.
I think a downed cruiser would make an awesome map, a giant gaping hole in the center from the MAC round that downed the ship shows multiple decks creating a venue for snipers, but otherwise an inticate labrynth of side passages and docking ports honeycombs the map, all at a slant which adds an interesting element to the game without an increase in the physics, you move slower gowing uphill, and faster going down. It would be great for King of the Hill. Multiple gravity pads sling players across the central hole, and a pool of water waits at the bottom, but it is just deep enough to stop your fall, so you can get back to the rest of the map from it, unlike the bottomless pits of death in Halo 2.
A nighttime map would be cool, low lighting combined with the return of the flashlight, the sniper rifle's night vision, and a creative use of plasma grenades would make for some interesting matches.
Interactive environments were introduced in Halo 2, what coud they add to make better use of this feature. They already have teleporters, elevators, gravity lifts, air vent boosts, concealing water falls, glass, windmills, button activated doors, destructable window props, and explosive barrels. They gave up ice patches, and I think those should make a return. They also ought to add breakaway walls and floors. You could shoot down stalactites (or stalagmites) but the chance of killing someone with it was one in a million. If you see someone coming towards you on motion sensor, and notice a breakaway cieling above you, and the target is nowhere to be seen, I think a rocket round to their feet followed by a bash to temple when they fall down in front of you disoriented in shieldless would be something of legend. It would make a great medal too.
On a ship maneuvering through slipspace fighting another ship, explosions rock the ship constantly. Sudden changes in direction affect the overall inertia, and affect the relative down. Or perhaps if the artificial gravity was on the fritz.
On the Cairo Station level there is an elevator that takes forever to reach the top (or bottom) right after you first encounter drones. That might make for a cool multiplayer level.
