Not to bash personal trainers, but too many of them aren't too helpful.
too true

Hurr durr bosu ball

-blam!- that, SQUATS
Not doing your squats on a yoga ball

Holy -blam!-. That's dangerous...
It's fine, the scrawny PT is obviously strong enough to catch both the guy and the barbell. He's a trained professional and knows what he's doing

I guess, it just doesn't seem safe..
I sure as hell wouldn't try that.
Even with the spotter, still seems risky...

I was joking, btw. It's retarded as hell and this is a PT we're talking about here. They all know nothing about actual fitness

Haha, thought you were somewhat joking.
I just don't get it, what does a ball do to benefit you?

Adds more core work because you need a ton of stabilization. I would never do it on a Swiss ball with a barbell, it's just too dangerous. If you're actually interested in doing something like that go for a bosa ball with dumbbells

-blam!-. Didn't think of core stabilization. Yeah, a Swiss ball is stupid. It can knock you off balance and you can badly injure yourself. At least with a Bosu ball, it gives you stabilization, but it's not dangerous.

Anyway, it's stupid to do dangerous exercises just for a few stabilization exercises.

Anything that's not a dumbbell, barbell, or body-weight is weak. Swiss ball, bosu ball, and machines are weak.

Except lat pulldowns, leg curls & extensions, and cable tricep extensions. Those machines are acceptable.

I'm your biggest fan!

Any good suggestions for home back workouts? I only have a pull up bar and a pair or 2.5kg dumbbells. I'm open to buying a barbell, though money is quite thinly spread at the moment.

EDIT: Never mind. I had a good look at the OP and I think I've got some new things to try. If you have any more ideas or anything to say about buying a barbell, please help me out. Thanks.

Any home workouts for abs?

Oh absolutely. For almost all ab exercises, all you need is your body and a floor.
(IMO, Abs are the only part of your body you can fully exercise without equipment.)

- Russian Twists
- Planks
- Leg lifts
- V ups
- Leg throws (w/ partner) (Throw to the side too)
- Bicycle kick
- Twisting Windmills
- Sit ups, Crunches, etc. There are also a million different sit up variations, use google to find new ones.

If you have a pull up bar, a thick tree branch, or anything you can just hang from, you can do hanging leg raises too.

Depends entirely on who trains you.
You could get some hardcore sensai who will bust your ass and turn you into a man.
Or you could get a softie who just puts you through the motions and you won't gain any muscle.

Or you could box. Can't go wrong there, plus boxing is applicable real-world self defense.

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

Some really good information in here. The key things I have to offer are; eating right is key, get a good technique and persist.

My current workout list is as follows:
Chest/Back
Legs
Arms/shoulders
Core

I go to the gym every second day so the days these groups are worked on rotate.

I am currently thinking about taking up the 300 workout, any opinions?

I personally wouldn't do chest and back on the same day. Working two big muscle groups on the same day isn't a good idea.
I'd rather hit Back/Biceps, Chest/Triceps, Legs, Shoulders/Abs.

why on earth would they do 50 reps of deadlifts? and 50 cleans?
Yeah that routine doesn't sound safe, at all.

That is the original version of the routine. It was designed for the actors in the movie 300 to get "ripped" fast.

That probably would be a better split than doing Chest and back on the same day. What would your suggestions for exercises for those days then?
