Okay I have a question,

I have one of these satalites for my internet, DIRECWAY, when I surf the net I get super fast connection, but when I am playing my ping is usually in the 2000. Is it becuase of the configure thing in the options menu? I usually set mine for a 56k becuase I do not have broadband. Is there anything I can do to make it so I could kick some ass online!!

On Xbox when I play my friends (who have all owned the game 10X as long as me) I can kick their butts. And Legendary is too easy!

Any way please answer my question if you can.

erm if you don't have broadband then a ping of 2000 isn't suprising. 56K modems are simply too slow for games with up to 16 other people in them. You could try setting your connection in Halo to a broadband speed, see what happens... Hope to see you online dude.

This is kinda a response to views expressed by ChuaThingy:

1) Yes, I agree Halo xbox was very much a revolutionary game. But just because it wasn't a revolution on PC, doesn't meant it's not as good... If anything it says more for the PC's ability as a games machine, the fact that it had already harnessed Halo's revolutionary aspects.

2) I can't be bothered to talk about graphics anymore.

3) If you actually practised using a mouse and keyboard for more than a few minutes you might find it a better alternative to a controller. Forgetting where the buttons are is hardly an excuse to prefer a controller.

4) Extra maps... whether you care a less or not, would you rather not have them, or have them just in case you feel like something different? Why would anyone want to be restricted when they have the option of having more? I'm not saying they're better than the original maps, although IMO some are, but the point is: Less is not More, Less is...well, Less.

5) Erm you don't have to get a load of PC's together to play multiplayer Halo. See there's this thing called the internet with a couple of million PC's linked together. So you can play against 16 people with one PC instead of having to get 4 xbox's together.

6) What does that have to do with anything? Those of us with HaloCE are winning multiplayer matches on maps you'll never even see, so take that, huh?

And about "tarnishing xbox Halo's legacy..." You are aware Halo was designed for PC aren't you? And Microsoft only changed that to launch the xbox? Halo PC was in development years before the xbox even exsisted. That's fact by the way. So if anything the xbox tarnishes Halo's PC heritage. Oh yeah and Ram costs about £25, like to see you get an xbox for that.

First, we're not only talking about ram here, there are other things that u need to play halo PC to its "best and fullest", but with xbox all u need is a system controller and the game... (and a tv but hey who doesn't have a tv), and for multiplayer who really cares about millions of gamers playing all over the world. When I play or any of my many hundreds of friends play games like that we play for fun, who cares about screen peaking (thats what teams are for) it makes the game funner to play and less stressful. Now I see a trend going around PC FPS games and it all depends on the type of game u like to play, now u could say halo PC is pretty much exactly like C&C Renegade which doesn't require loads of hardware to use and is still fun to play. But if you like realer to life games than halo xbox is your ticket because even the chief can't do some of the stuff in PC version, like when someone sneaks up behind you, you should hear them coming or use motion tracker, but if you can turn fast enough to stop them from 1-hit killing you than its not a far game.

Once when Xbox 2 comes out, no doubt you'll probably buy it. Same as people who play PC would buy a video card every 3-4 years.

From the looks of it, you're in the wrong forum. Maybe you should take up resident in the Halo Xbox forum since the PC version was made for people who don't believe in playing FPS games on the Xbox, or people who didn't get Halo on Xbox, or people want to battle against millions of other people.

Halo PC is the same as the Xbox in terms of graphic, gameplay, sound, and fun. Regardless what platform you played is depend on your fingers, not the control system. If you can't sneak in the PC, then it is obvious that your finger is not skilled in the use of a keyboard and mouse control. There is no shame in that, but if you can't sneak then you can't say Halo PC sucks because it is your fingers that sucks and is at fault for not being able to excute that movement.

LMAO, that is the most stupid, idiotic, and BS comments I ever heard of, whats its going to tarnish, the Halo 2 packaging. Man, whoever said that is obviously having some extreme mental problem and becoming a real retarded person.

Lol Ekul1022 you rock.

A few things you missed out though, I subscribe to Britiain's best selling PC games magazine PCGamer and they gave C&C: Renegade 47% and Halo 91%. I agree. So no, Halo is not like C&C Renegade on PC.
Also, Lahoo_Saher what are you on about when you say "But if you like realer to life games than halo xbox is your ticket because even the chief can't do some of the stuff in PC version" I wasn't aware the Chief's abilities had changed from the console-to-PC port? You can easily sneak up on someone if you want to, or alternatively you can set the motion tracker to display friends and enemies so that doesn't happen. (Can you do that on xbox?)

Your problem is that satellite internet connections have atrocious upload speeds. They are simply not meant for gaming: to have a good ping (x<50) then you have to have an upload speed of at least 1.5 mbs, and a download speed greater or the same. That's why ADSL users sometimes have better pings than cable users: they have identical upload/download speeds, and on a busy cable network (which mine is thankfully not) your upload and download speeds can get restricted.

As far as people talking about Halo PC being worse/better than Halo for Xbox, I believe Skippy basically summarized why, for online play, Halo PC is obviously the better game. If you can run it, (back before my PC bugged out, I was able to play Halo PC with the graphics seriously toned down, but I didn't complain because I was playing it online with little to no lag!) you cannot complain. If you cannot, than you cannot complain here because your argument isn't relevant. Who cares if this game brings your videocard to its knees? You're playing Halo online. You're playing Halo on a PC, with the advantage of a mouse and keyboard

These arguments remind me of the self-righteous fans who complain when Frankie's Weekly Update doesn't contain what they want (/ is delayed, hint hint to the complainers)...do they honestly think Bungie cares a whit that people didn't get what they wanted out of the updates? Bungie didn't need to give out Weekly Updates. They didn't do it for Halo 1, and just because they're doing it now doesn't mean the majority of the fan-base (the year that you've registered unfortunately comes into play again) deserves it. Likewise with Halo PC: they didn't need to look into a port. They did. Be thankful. Stop complaining.

The physics just aren't the same in some ways. The pistol is less accurate and the nades don't throw as far as they do in the console version.

The simple reason why the Xbox version is better than the PC is that the porting company, Gearbox, doesn't have a bloody clue how to implement networked play. Poor framerates are another issue, but the constant, horrendous lag is what makes the PC port a total joke.

Halo 1 doesn't have online play on the Xbox, so let's compare apples to apples: LAN

On LAN, Halo Xbox is nearly flawless. You shoot at your targets (instead of leading by several inches), vehicles don't warp, people don't mysteriously survive direct rocket hits, etc.

HaloPC/CE on the other hand lags like crazy, even on LAN. Even at close range you have to lead your targets by like 3 inches with the Assault Rifle or Shotgun. People sometimes survive direct hits with heavy weapons, players still warp some.

Nicer graphics and a few new maps can't make up for ridiculously laggy gameplay. Gearbox screwed up.

The bottom line is that most of what people seem to be saying here when they give reasons why Xbox rules and PC sucks or vice versa boil down to personal preferences.

I like playing the Xbox version better than the PC version because I preferr a controller to a mouse/keyboard. I'm not going to argue which control setup is "better" because it really boils down to a preference.

The one concrete non-preference thing that makes me go for the Xbox over PC games whenever the option exists is the development environment.

An console game has to work the first time, out of the box. It's become almost SOP with PC software to ship today and patch tomorrow, and I'm sick and tired of buying buggy software, having to wait for, find, and install patches that sometimes break as much as they fix.

Console developers don't have that crutch. They have to do it right the first time. And if you don't think that sort of development environment makes a big difference, you've never coded software.

In reply to M6D-Pistol and Elmo....first of all, the pistol's accuracy has not been decreased, Gearbox just turned off the auto-aim feature that subtly helps Xbox gamers aim. Nice job on the research.

Secondly, Elmo, your charges are absurd. Halo had no netcode. The only code it had was for system link games and 4 xboxes in tandem.......which is a far cry from a developer who didn't make the game trying to make up netcode that will match the performance of connected xboxes. It's an entirely different system, like comparing the taste of apples and oranges "because they're both fruit."

Actually they did do this for Halo 1. Matt Soell did the weekly updates.

Ok, you my friend need some counseling. Allow me to provide this.

Muffin: Please sit down Mr. Skippy

Skippy: Um, why is your office in a dumpster outside Bungie Studios.

Muffin: No reason. Now Mr. Skippy, tell me what is bothering you.

Skippy: Well I think that Halo PC is better than Halo Xbox

Muffin: You need to be seeing a better psychologist. But allow me to give you my PROFESSIONAL opinion. While you may be correct on the fact that PC has a better multiplayer allow me to ask this.

I have a frickin Alienware Computer with a cable (highspeed) internet and the ghrapics on the computer suck (I bought the latest Radeon Card for Halo PC) comapred to Halo Xbox.

Now Mr. Skippy according to you "If not, your PC isn't good enought and thats your fault not Halo's" Please tell me how a custom built computer for gaming with the best ghrapics and sound cards avaliable (I'm a rich ass I know) still doesn't ammount to the Xbox Ghrapics and sound.

Skippy: I was just sayin....

Muffin: QUIET YOU INFERIOR BEING, ONE DAY I WILL RULE THE WORLD, AND I WILL PUT YOU TO WORK IN MY FACTORY WHICH BUILD HARMONICAS.

Skippy: Uh, I gotta go.

Muffin: STAY WHERE U ARE U PATHETIC HUMAN. YOU HAVE NO GLUTTES

Skippy: Please don't hurt me. I didn't mean anything.

Muffin: What do you mean hurt you I'm here to council you?

Skippy: But you just said...

Muffin: This shows your dysfunctionality. Obviously you create situations which are not true and pass them off for real. Like your quote about the controls. Please tell me how you feel about the controls for XBOX versus PC.

Skippy: I did, didn't you....

Muffin: DIDN"T I TELL YOU TO SHUT YOUR ASS UP

Skippy: Um, kinda

Muffin: Kinda what?

Skippy: To shut your ass up?

Muffin: GET OUT OF MY OFFICE, I MEAN DUMPSTER. I WILL NOT HAVE PEOPLE TALKING TO ME WHO ARE SO DAMN STUPID

Skippy: Ok fine, your a fricking idiot.

Muffin: I know you are but what am I?

Skippy: Um I really have to get going.

Muffin: Okay, want a bannan?

Skippy: No thanks, I ate some sushi left over from the Bungie Party.

Muffin: GOD -blaming- damnit. I was going to eat that for dinner.

Skippy: Sorry, you know Muffin we're getting a bit off topic.

Muffin: yes we are, sorry. I expect to see you twice a week for counciling and analysis. Please talk to my secretary for scheduling.

Skippy: You don't have a secretary. Your office is a dumpster.

Muffin: That is where you are wrong. See that other dumpster, that is Matt Nagouchi's ( I guess thats how you spell it) desk. He takes appointments. while not playing Fable.

Skippy: I'll call fro home

Muffin: OKay bye

Skippy: Bye

Anyway Skippy your a fool. Your just jealous because you don't have an Xbox and you won't be able to get Halo 2, you fricking idiot.

Yes, also known as a LAN (local area network, which is how you connect your Xboxes together). System Link and LAN are the same thing. That's why I said it's comparing apples to apples.

If you read my post, I'm not comparing online play vs. Xbox system link. I'm comparing Xbox system link to PC LAN, which is exactly the same thing.

So, with that established, my point was that under the exact same circumstances, Bungie's version plays flawlessly while Gearbox's version has a multitude of problems. Therefore Gearbox's lame excuses where they blame lag and warping on LAN on the game's physics don't hold water.

Anyway, the point I've made all along is that if your PC isn't the same as everyone elses. If Halo's not good on your PC then bad luck. It's better on mine, in every sense, especially graphics. So unless you want to come round and have a look I suggest you don't accuse me of lying. I know what I'm seeing.

  • user homepage:
  • last post: 01.01.0001 12:00 AM PDT

Heyyo,

I've decided to drop my 2c on this cause after a few posts this just became a flaming battle.

First off, I agree with that 1 dude who said gearbox did a crappy job of porting Halo from xbox to pc. What gearbox did was just rebuild a whole new engine... Bad move, cause it turned out worse, and just made the PC version take longer to get completed. Due to this error, you need massive cpu specs to run it. I believe there are some other xbox games that converted to PC nicely. I think that the Riddick game will do fine. If you get HaloCE, the netcode n' frames/seconds do improve, so that's nice. But still not fully optimized... it still feels overwhelming on my comp. My comp's stonger than an xbox (check another one of my post for specs), but then again, xbox's need less power to run good anywho. Tv rez's are 512x320 or something. Gearbox remade some textures for pc, which's good, but some they diddn't bother to upgrade. Most noticably MasterCheif's textures...

And yes, halo was first being made for PC, then M$ came along with their big wallet n' then halo became an xbox exclustive game to help promote xbox. Clever marketing strategy, but pisses off us PC owners cause now we get a less grander version of PC cause it turned into a xbox-focused game...

The netcode for Halo also ain't the best, BUT, it ain't the worse. Far Cry has gotta have the worse netcode ever. If you get a bud to stand still, n' snipe him? sometimes it won't even work. The Beta of Far Cry actually had better netcode... lol... sad eh? Another great example was me bud playing online. Him and another guy pulled out knives n' started going at it, n' then the other guy sweeps around the back of my friend, but he keeps swinging... n' kills the guy... without turning around... explain that eh? lmao, was funny, but messed up. I think his ping was 112 or so... That's the only part I've got against Far Cry, the netcode, everything else is great.

As for the lack of coop on PC version? it's not cause "the ai's too advanced" as gearbox said. Far Cry has more advanced ai, and it has a coop mod. Gearbox probably just said that probably to focus on the other coding. If sacrificing Coop to pump out a pretty decent conversion from xbox? then it's ok...

The fuel rod n' banshee? I agree, bad addons. Both too strong. N' for weapon respawning? they should have the prolonged respawn time, not the snipers. Sniping's pretty hard in halo cause you have to aim ahead of where they're going. Flamethrower's also a little too much. BUT, The rockethog was a nice addon, not the most accurate, but you get 3 rockets per clip (or whatever word you wanna use) and you need skills to use it efficiently.

Also, the lack of shield colorations (jackals, n' stationary) is a little upsetting, but I can live with it.

Overall, I love Halo PC better than xbox despite these flaws cause there's still the fun of gaming with friends cause of multiplayer, and the new maps, and using Teamspeak (like someone else mentioned. And if you're typing ingame and die? It's your own fault I say, lol.) I also use xfire so me n' me buds can just join eachother's game with a push of a button.

I've played the xbox version of Halo, n' it's easier to kill due to more accurate n' deadlier weapons, n' the slight autoaim (You know it's there, the most obvious example is when you go to melee, your aim spins itself a little).

I just hope in Halo 2 they take into account some of the downsides to some of the new features in Halo PC (Banshee, fuelrod, and flamethrower too stong). If not, then I'll probably be a little hesitant on getting Halo 2 for PC (IF they even intend on making it for PC... at this rate m$ will keep it as xbox exclusive...)

PS, has anyone played halo on mac? how'd that turn out? cause most mac's have lower sys specs than PC's..

Compared to my PC the graphics on Xbox are waaaay better. thats coz im only on Gforce 2 but the gameplay is no different the only plus thing i can see on the Xbox is that the cooperative mode is there if only that where possible on the PC

Edit: Just read your PM. Untill Zanzibar comes out I won't be playing CE. Just don't feel myself drawn to it. I've always preferred XBox single player over anything. But I can't wait to try the Halo2/CE team's work. I'll play it on EPGamer servers or any other which use the "De-lagginator".
By the way the name change - is that why I don't see you in the PC Gamer forums? In general it's a better forum than most.

I don't have an xbox eh? funny, I thought that I've said on about... hmm, 5 occasions that I had the xbox version of Halo before PC? 3 of those were in one post.

OH now I see... you didn't actually Read any of anyone else's posts because you think you're opinion is more important than any of theirs.

Throughout this thread, points have been made to support and to disregard my opinions, and in most cases I have addressed these issues. That's how you support an opinion, it makes you sound like you have a point worth defending, instead of just coming along and spurting out what you want to say without caring about what has already been said before, or even backing up your point.

Muffin, you've proven yourself in front of a lot of people to be spontaneously opinionated and ill-informed. And yes i am aware that a lot of people would say I'm opinionated aswell, but at least I have reasons which I'm willing to explain in depth. Unlike your shallow comment.
