"For you, the day that the Hicks graced your village was the most important day of your life. For me...it was Tuesday."
I am just going to post this again because I thought I made a few good points and more people are active now.
A few people are saying that the Master Chief will not die because he is too "bad ass" or that his death would be too depressing. The fact of the matter is that the Master Chief NEEDS to die in Halo 3. Why? Because he is a soldier that is built for the covenant war, and only the covenant war. He is feared by the covenant, and revered by the humans. But when the war is over, he will not have a hero's welcome. It would most likely be something like what happended to Ender in the Ender's Games books: every nation on Earth would want to claim him as the leader of their armies, but none can be allowed to have him. The obvious answer to this problem is to kill the Master Chief. But that is just lame and Bungie knows it. They will make him die a heroic death in Halo 3, I guarantee it.
But how? He has to fight off a covenant fleet, destroy the flood, -blam!-slap Cortana and find out what the hell is wrong with her, and somehow destroy or disable the rings.
The object in Africa is obviously the Ark. Earth was attacked by the Covenant in Halo 2 not because it was human turf (they didn't know humans were there) but more likely because they were looking for the Ark. So as far as the chief taking care of the rings, he will probably reclaim the Ark from the Covenant and than either make the rings self destruct or disable them.
As far as the Gravemind is concerned, I do not agree with Forsaken Raik that the Gravemind is a forerunner. Its more likely that he either controls the flood, or helps control them (multiple Graveminds perhaps? One per ring?). I do not think the flood will come up in Halo 3. None of the flood were on Regret's ship (as far as we know) and they are contained on the rings. Bungie could have it so the flood learned how to fly a few ships that were left behind, and it is perfectly plausible, but that would make Earth too chaotic I think. A war on three fronts?
So here is how it goes: the humans fight the covenant on Earth and have a chance of winning (since the covenant can't glass the planet. They need the Ark.), the Master Chief either rejoins the surviving Spartans of Reach or the newly trained Spartans that Mendoza trained after the Master Chiefs group, and they go and beat all the ass at the Ark. It could end up being that the Spartans fight there way to the control center, but most of the Spartans are dead by the end of the struggle and it is left up to the chief to finish the job. Maybe like a classic "we will hold this point. Finish the mission!" kind of thing. And then the Master Chief faces impossible odds, even for him, but is able to destroy the rings by using the control center but has to sacrifice himself.
Oh, or maybe it could be that after the initial breach of the Arks defenses, the Spartans split up and plant charges throughout the facility to blow it to hell, and after they plant the explosives they get tied down inside by a ridiculous number of Covenant and decided to detonate the explosives to save humanity.
Just a thought.
