Yes the checkpoint system is broken. On of the most annoying things about playing campaign is the coop. There isn't a save and quit, so if you need to go do something you need to pause and let your xbox red ring or just end the game. If there was a coop save and quit I probably could have done the launch, I just didn't have the time.Halo has definitely been moving away from replayability. Stuck in the stale old roots begun by H3. ODST and Reach were refreshing but not enough.
I much prefer CE or H2.
-H2 was the only Halo that actually tried to do something about the checkpoint system. But it did poorly, with the '5 times death second to last revert' feature and getting rid of checkpoint delay options, longer checkpoint delays (only a few instances), and reoccurring checkpoints. Reach brought back the latter but it's still not as great as it was in CE.
-H2 had a reason for Blind skull. Now it's just punishment when we could be getting a better skull (losing the hud but still seeing our guns and hands).
-H2 had a game breaking glitch 'perma camo' as a result of allowing players to turn on/off skulls without having to restart the mission. With all the newer Halo games, restarting is mandatory (even in CEA, which has neither campaign scoring or Theater).
-H2 Grunt Birthday Party affected anyone who could be headshotted. H3 only affected Grunts and Reach and CEA was purely aesthetic.
H2 IWHBYD had a real challenge. H3 IWHBYD was just terrible to find (if it weren't for modders).
H2 Sputnik is the kind of power Spartans needed. Cowbell is inferior.
