I got this from a post on my site, newmombasa:
I'm sure that most of you have seen the Halo 3 trailer and noticed Cortana's somewhat quirky behavior. While most of what she says appears to be gibberish, it's really not. http://marathon.bungie.org/story/cortana.html
That link will show a series of e-mails which are confirmed to have originated from the Old Bungie Offices. These became known as the Cortana Letters. These e-mails are adressed from 'Cortana.' Notice how the first e-mail gives direct quotes from the Halo 3 trailer...and the e-mail was written in 1999...
The one line in the first Cortana letter says "Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:
THIS is the way the world ends." Isn't 'this is the way the world ends' from the Halo 3 trailer? It is. If you read the letter you can see other correlations but the startlingly obvious implication is the last line. By 'your poet Eliot' we can infer that she means T.S. Eliot who wrote a poem called "The Hollow Men", the poem's final verse goes...
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
So when Cortana says that your poet Eliot had it wrong, she's implying that the world will end with a bang! What's this mean for Halo 3? Does it mean it ends with a bang? A select few people will get saved in the 'ARK' and that's why the Covenant are trying to find it? Frankie will grow hair? John really was the reclaimer of the past and the ARK is somekind of time machine and the story involves a crazy time paradox I can't comprehend?!?!?! Wish I knew.

Note: I don't know if anyone else has come up with a theory like this, if they have please post a link or something. I'm not trying to take other people's ideas. Thanks.
